UK wildlife – SOS!

‘Wildlife’ means all the plants, animals and (26) _ living things found in the wild These can be mammals such as squirrels, reptiles like the sand lizard, fish, insects, and tiny little animals that you can't see easily

In the UK alone, there are about 37,000 different species of animals and 65,000 different species of plants Sadly, (27) , over the last 100 years more than 170 plant and animal species have completely disappeared Today, about 15% of all British wildlife is still at (28) , especially animals such as the otter and the brown hair Unless we do something to help, things will only get worse The main reason (29) some types of plants and animals are becoming endangered species is that their habitats are lost or have changed Animals like moths, birds and bats have lost their homes as people have cut down the hedgerows they live in Also, a lot of ponds are no longer suitable for the animals and plants to live in because they are polluted, or people have filled them in

We need to save many species of endangered British wildlife from extinction before it is too late You can help by supporting environmental groups like the Environment Agency that are working to protect our (30) _ wildlife and habitats from the danger of disappearing forever You can even create a small wildlife habitat yourself by making a pond at school or in your garden

Twenty-one-year-old Alfie Deyes was in London to promote a book based on his extremely successful vlog Pointless With over four million subscribers, Alfie had become famous by making and uploading videos of himself and his friends taking part in games and activities that have no purpose, hence the name of the vlog But he is just one of a small army of vloggers with large followings that have become much

bigger stars than actors and pop singers, and now the mass media want to know what makes them so

attractive

The answer, of course, is not simple, but successful vloggers do share some common characteristics They are outgoing, quick-witted and spontaneous in front of their webcams, which enables them to create a close relationship with their viewers There is also a lot of interaction with the audience and vloggers

ask their followers for feedback on their videos This means vloggers can adapt the content of their videos

Trang 4

between vloggers and their fans, based on shared interests and trust that cannot be found between the providers and users of other media

However, it appears that those shared interests and that trust might be negatively affected by something that has existed for a lot longer than vlogging: money Some of the big-name vloggers can earn up to £20,00 for displaying an advertisement on their channel, or for showing advertisements at the beginning of their videos

So, will vloggers go the way of many TV programmes and films and become simple vehicles for selling products? Not according to the vloggers, who say that their creative independence is far more important than making money However, Zoella, one of the few vloggers in the public eye in Britain, caused a scandal after following Alfie Deyes’ example and publishing a book At the book launch, Zoella claimed that it had always been her dream to write a novel, but just a few weeks later, she had to admit that she hadn’t written it alone and had had help with it Her name was just being used to sell it Most of her fans forgave her, but many media experts saw it as a sign that vlogging had lost its innocence and that the media corporations were taking control

Question 31 Which would be the most suitable for the passage? A How to be successful in vlogging? B Stars of the vlogsphere

C Vlogging: A declining industry D Selling products: The ultimate aim of vlogging Question 32 The word “them” in paragraph 1 refers to

C They are extroverts D They are natural in front of their cameras Question 34 The word “feedback” in paragraph 2 mostly means

A experience B assessment C backlash D comeback Question 35 Which of the following is true, according to the passage?

C Advertising companies have tried to persuade vloggers to display advertisements in their videos D Media experts showed their support to Zoella when she admitted her mistake

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 36 to 42

There is currently an epidemic of “affluenza” throughout the world - an obsessive, envious, keeping-up-with-the-Jonese - that has resulted in huge increases in depression and anxiety among millions Over a nine-month period, bestselling author and psychologist Oliver James travelled around the world to try and find out why He discovered how, despite very different cultures and levels of wealth, “affluenza” is spreading Cities he visited include Sydney, Singapore, Moscow, Copenhagen, New York and Shanghai,

and in each place he interviewed several groups of people in the hope of finding out not only why this is

happening, but also how one can increase the strength of one’s emotional immune system He asks: what they haven’t got and want to be someone they’re not, despite being richer and freer from traditional restraints?

Trang 5

In his 1997 book Britain on the Couch, Oliver James asserted that "advanced capitalism makes money

out of misery and dissatisfaction, as if it were encouraging us to fill up the psychic void with material

goods" In this book, he explores the idea further, and it's terrific A lot of readers, wanting to put their finger on why the affluent world they live in makes them so uneasy, will want to cheer Here he is saying, loud and clear, that capitalism is bad for your mental health And then he tells us why this is the case, and what we can do about it

"My focus," explains James, "is on why we are so messed up, not with dangling a false promise of the possibility of happiness." So why are we so messed up? It's because of what James calls ‘selfish

capitalism’, or, more catchily, "Affluenza", a virus-like condition that spreads through affluent countries

In these countries, notably English-speaking ones, people define themselves by how much money they make They are also ruled by superficial values - how attractive they look, how famous they are, how much they are able to show off

It's a wonderfully clear and cogent thesis Affluenza, as defined by James, is clearly recognisable as our

way of life It spreads because it feeds on itself; when you try to make yourself feel better by buying a

car, or bulking up in the gym, or spraying on a fake tan, or having a facelift, you actually make yourself

feel worse, which makes you want to buy more things

The author’s antidote for Affluenza is simple: look inward, not outward Don't be a sheep Try to be

"beautiful" rather than "attractive" Embrace the family Don't see life as a competition Don't watch too much TV Simple, perhaps But will it be enough?

(Adapted from New English File by Clive Oxenden and Christina Latham-Koenig)
