To define the effect of the socio-political context on the representation of the President Bush's ideology - To suggest some practical implications in teaching and learning authentic materials Scope of the study First, within the scope of this thesis, we wish to touch upon some prominent features of a political speech to explore what linguistic strategies Mr Bush employs as well as how his ideologies are realized in the speech Second, during President G.W.Bush's tour of the Middle East from to 16 January 2008, Mr Bush visited countries and made a number of speeches However, we only focus on the linguistic features of the speech made by the President G.W.Bush on January 13, 2008 in the United Arab Emirates Finally, we adopt the framework to analyze a political speech including personal pronouns and lexicalization provided by Hilary Hillier (2004) and two additional features: modality, naming referents in the study Methods of the study - Reviewing related theories - Quantifying and classifying materials - Analyzing the selected data - Reaching some conclusions on the subject-matter under investigation and accordingly giving necessary comments Design of the study There are three main parts in this paper: Part A: Introduction This part presents the rationale, aims, scope, methods and design of the thesis Stt.010.Mssv.BKD002ac.email.ninhd 77.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.C.37.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.77.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.C.37.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.77.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.C.37.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.77.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.C.37.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.77.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.C.37.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.77.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.C.37.99.44.45.67.22.55.77t@edu.gmail.com.vn.bkc19134.hmu.edu.vn.Stt.010.Mssv.BKD002ac.email.ninhddtt@edu.gmail.com.vn.bkc19134.hmu.edu.vn C.33.44.55.54.78.65.5.43.22.2.4 22.Tai lieu Luan 66.55.77.99 van Luan an.77.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.C.37.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.C.37.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.C.37.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.C.33.44.55.54.78.655.43.22.2.4.55.22 Do an.Tai lieu Luan van Luan an Do an.Tai lieu Luan van Luan an Do an Part B: Development This part demonstrates three chapters: Chapter1: Theoretical back ground Chapter 2: Data analysis and Discussion Chapter 3: Application for learning and teaching Part C: Conclusion The part summaries the major findings and provides some practical applications as well as some suggestions for further researches This part is accompanied by a list of reference Stt.010.Mssv.BKD002ac.email.ninhd 77.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.C.37.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.77.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.C.37.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.77.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.C.37.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.77.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.C.37.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.77.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.C.37.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.77.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.C.37.99.44.45.67.22.55.77t@edu.gmail.com.vn.bkc19134.hmu.edu.vn.Stt.010.Mssv.BKD002ac.email.ninhddtt@edu.gmail.com.vn.bkc19134.hmu.edu.vn C.33.44.55.54.78.65.5.43.22.2.4 22.Tai lieu Luan 66.55.77.99 van Luan an.77.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.C.37.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.C.37.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.C.37.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.C.33.44.55.54.78.655.43.22.2.4.55.22 Do an.Tai lieu Luan van Luan an Do an.Tai lieu Luan van Luan an Do an Part B: Development Chapter 1: Theoretical background 1.1 Discourse and Discourse Analysis 1.1.1 Discourse The term "discourse" has been defined in different ways According to David Nunan (1995), a discourse "is stretch of language that may be longer than one sentence" Barbara Johnstone (2002, p.2) asserts that "discourse usually means actual instances of communication in the medium of language" Moreover, Brown and Yule (1983, p.1) state very clearly" Discourse …is language in use " In 1989, Guy Cook claims that there is one kind of language " which has been used to communicate something and is felt to be coherent".This kind of language - language in use, for communication is called "discourse " Cook (1995, p.198) sees discourse as ''stretches of language perceived to be meaningful, unified and purposive'' which seems to be widely acceptable In this thesis, the notion seems to be the best to adopt 1.1.2 Discourse versus Text The distinction between two terms text and discourse are rather confusing There is disagreement about the meaning of two terms For some writers, the terms seem to be used almost interchangeably Nunan (1995) claims that a text, or a discourse, is a stretch of language that may be longer than one sentence while Crystal(1992, p.72) states that: a text may be spoken or written, prose or verse, dialogue or monologue It may be any thing from a single proverb to a whole play from a momentary cry for help to all day discussion in a committee Whereas, some other linguists see the two terms in different ways: Brow and Yule (1983, p.6) who "use text as a technical term to refer to the Stt.010.Mssv.BKD002ac.email.ninhd 77.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.C.37.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.77.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.C.37.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.77.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.C.37.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.77.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.C.37.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.77.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.C.37.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.77.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.C.37.99.44.45.67.22.55.77t@edu.gmail.com.vn.bkc19134.hmu.edu.vn.Stt.010.Mssv.BKD002ac.email.ninhddtt@edu.gmail.com.vn.bkc19134.hmu.edu.vn C.33.44.55.54.78.65.5.43.22.2.4 22.Tai lieu Luan 66.55.77.99 van Luan an.77.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.C.37.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.C.37.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.C.37.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.C.33.44.55.54.78.655.43.22.2.4.55.22 Do an.Tai lieu Luan van Luan an Do an.Tai lieu Luan van Luan an Do an verbal record of a communicative act'' Moreover, Crystal (1992, p.25) defines discourse as " a continuous stretch of (especially spoken) language larger that a sentence, often constituting a coherent unit, such as a sermon, argument, joke or narrative " and text as "a piece of naturally occurring spoken, written or signed discourse identified for purposes of analysis It is often a language unit with a definable function, such as a conversation, a poster." From the above points of view, discourse can be perceived as a whole communicative process, whereas text should be understood as the verbal record or the linguistic product of that communicative process In brief, discourse and text are different but interrelated We advocate the claim of Widdowson (1984, p.100) suggesting that "Discourse is a communicative process by means of interaction Its situational outcome is a change in a state of affairs: information is conveyed, intentions made clear, its linguistic product is Text " 1.1.3 Types of Discourse In David Nunan (1995, p.16), discourse types can be classified in terms of '' the communicative job they are doing'' We can divide the text in to those that are basically transactional in nature, and those that are basically interpersonal Transactional language occurs when the participants are concerned with the exchange of goods and services Whereas, interpersonal language occurs when the speakers are less concerned with the exchange of goods and services and more with socializing The first of these is transactional language It is no doubt that language is used to convey information from person to person It is also used to get business done For example, when a doctor tells a patient how to take medicine, transactional language is used Other cases would include a teacher Stt.010.Mssv.BKD002ac.email.ninhd 77.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.C.37.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.77.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.C.37.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.77.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.C.37.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.77.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.C.37.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.77.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.C.37.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.77.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.C.37.99.44.45.67.22.55.77t@edu.gmail.com.vn.bkc19134.hmu.edu.vn.Stt.010.Mssv.BKD002ac.email.ninhddtt@edu.gmail.com.vn.bkc19134.hmu.edu.vn C.33.44.55.54.78.65.5.43.22.2.4 22.Tai lieu Luan 66.55.77.99 van Luan an.77.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.C.37.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.C.37.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.C.37.99.44.45.67.22.55.77.C.33.44.55.54.78.655.43.22.2.4.55.22 Do an.Tai lieu Luan van Luan an Do an.Tai lieu Luan van Luan an Do an Israelis/raise/thriving/modern society/rocky soil Palestinian people /aspire / build /nation / own Today/ Israelis / Palestinians /understand/ only/ way/ realize/ own/ goal /be/ by/ help/ one another Leader / both /side /still have/ /tough /decision/ ahead/and/they/ need /back /decision/ real /commitment Act Rewrite: You will have no better friend than the United States of America The United States of America is ……………………………………… The Statue of Liberty was designed by a man He traveled widely in this part of the world The Statue of Liberty…………………………………………………… He wondered "When will you turn your face toward the East, oh Liberty?" pronouns and modality to show his power (we- exclusive/inclusive and will; I and directly) Moreover, his argument has been reinforced with the association of syntactic forms and pronouns From the aspect of lexicalization, we can see that the repetition of key words or phrases is made use of for the purpose of emphasis Furthermore, negative vocabulary is employed to strongly emphasize the negative presentation of extremists and terrorists, especially negative names with reference to them Last but not least, modality is useful for the author to express his evaluation to the reality as well as to indicate his authority to the audience Modality consists of modal verbs, other lexical verbs and adverbs which effectively reveal his authority to the people of the Middle East as well as the solidarity to the audience Suggestions for further works This study has been conducted with a high hope of discovering how power and ideology are realized syntactically and lexically in relation to particular context It is recommendable that more detailed investigation should be conducted so as to achieve a better comprehension And more stress must be put on the implications for language opportunity to stand on Arab soil and speak to the people of this nation and this region (2) Throughout the sweep of history, the lands that the Arab people call home have played a pivotal role in world affairs (3) These lands sit at the juncture of three great continents Europe and Asia and Africa (4) These lands have given birth to three of the world's major religions (5) These lands have seen the rise and fall of great civilizations (6) And in the 21st century, these lands are once again playing a central role in the human story (7) A great new era is unfolding before us (8) This new era is founded on the equality of all people before God (9) This new era is being built with the understanding that power is a trust that must be exercised with the consent of the governed and deliver equal justice under the law (10) And this new era offers hope for the millions across the Middle East who yearn for a future of peace and progress and opportunity (11) Here in Abu Dhabi, we see clearly the outlines of this future (12) Beginning with the revered father of this country Sheikh Zayed you have succeeded in building a prosperous society out of the desert (13) You have opened your doors to the world economy(14) You have encouraged women to contribute to the development of your nation and they have occupied some of your highest ministerial posts (15) You have held historic elections for the Federal National Council (16) You have shown the world a model of a Muslim state that is tolerant toward people of other faiths (17) I'm proud to stand in a nation where the people freedom (20) Others may call it the advance of justice (21) Yet whatever term we use, the ideal is the same(22) In a free and just society, every person is treated with dignity (23) In a free and just society, leaders are accountable to those they govern(24) And in a free and just society, individuals can rise as far as their talents and hard work will take them(25) For decades, the people of this region saw their desire for liberty and justice denied at home and dismissed abroad in the name of stability(26) Today your aspirations are threatened by violent extremists who murder the innocent in pursuit of power(27) These extremists have hijacked the noble religion of Islam, and seek to impose their totalitarian ideology on millions(28) They hate freedom and they hate democracy because it fosters religious tolerance and allows people to chart their own future(29) They hate your government because it does not share their dark vision(30) They hate the United States because they know we stand with you in opposition to their brutal ambitions(31) And everywhere they go, they use murder and fear to foment instability to advance their aims(32) One cause of instability is the extremists supported and embodied by the regime that sits in Tehran (33) Iran is today the world's leading state sponsor of terror(34) It sends hundreds of millions of dollars to extremists around the world while its own people face repression and economic hardship at home( 35) It undermines Lebanese hopes for peace by arming and aiding the terrorist group Hezbollah(36) It subverts the hopes for peace in other parts of the region by funding terrorist groups like Hamas and the Palestine Islamic Jihad (37) It sends arms to the Taliban in Afghanistan and Shia militants in Iraq (38) It seeks to intimidate its neighbors with ballistic missiles and bellicose rhetoric(39) And finally, it 45 Stt.010.Mssv.BKD002ac.email.ninhd everywhere (41) So the United States is strengthening our longstanding security commitments with our friends in the Gulf and rallying friends around the world to confront this danger before it is too late(42) The other major cause of instability is the extremists embodied by al Qaeda and its affiliates (43) On September 11, 2001, al Qaeda murdered nearly 3,000 people on America's home soil (44) Some of the victims that day were innocent Muslims(45) And since then, al Qaeda and its allies have killed many more Muslims here in the Middle East including women and children (46) In Afghanistan under the Taliban, on Iraq's Anbar Province, they ruled by intimidation and murder (47) Their goal is to impose that same dark rule across the Middle East (48) So they seek to topple your governments, acquire weapons of mass destruction, and drive a wedge between the people of the United States and the people of the Middle East (49) And they will fail (50) The United States joins you in your commitment to the freedom and ,security of this region and we will not abandon you to terrorists or extremists(51) The fight against the forces of extremism is the great ideological struggle of our time (52) And in this fight, our nations have a weapon more powerful than bombs or bullets (53) It is the desire for freedom and justice written into our hearts by Almighty God and no terrorist or tyrant can take that away (54) We see this desire in the 12 million Iraqis who dipped their fingers in purple ink as they voted in defiance of al Qaeda (55) We see the desire in the Palestinians who elected a President committed to peace and reconciliation (56) We see this desire in the thousands of Lebanese whose protests helped rid their country of a foreign occupier (57) And we see this desire Pacific was unwise, because our interests lay in supporting pro-American leaders no matter how they ruled their people (106) Fortunately, America rejected this advice, kept our faith in freedom, and stood with the people of Asia (107) The results are now in (108) Today the people of Japan have both a working democracy and a hereditary emperor (109) They have preserved their traditional religious practices while tolerating the faiths of others (100) They are surrounded by many democracies that reflect the full diversity of the region (111) Some of these democracies have constitutional monarchies, some have parliaments, and 49 Stt.010.Mssv.BKD002ac.email.ninhd free nations of Asia all derive their authority from the consent of the governed and all know the lasting stability that only freedom can bring (114) This transformation would not have been possible without America's presence and perseverance over many decades (115) And just as our commitment to Asia helped people there secure their freedom and prosperity, our commitment to the Middle East will help you achieve yours (116) And you can know from our record in Asia that our commitment is real, it is strong, and it is lasting (117) Today America is using its influence to foster peace and reconciliation in the Holy Land (118) The Israelis have raised a thriving modern society out of rocky soil, and want to live their lives in freedom and security at home and at peace with their neighbors (119) The Palestinian people aspire to build a nation of their own where they can live in dignity and realize their dreams (120) Today Israelis and Palestinians each understand that the only way to realize their own goals is by helping one another (121) In other words, an independent, viable, democratic, and peaceful Palestinian state is more than the dream of the Palestinians (122) It's also the best guarantee for peace for all its neighbors and the Israelis understand this (123) Leaders on both sides still have many tough decisions ahead, and they will need to back these decisions with real commitments (124) But the time has come for a Holy Land where Palestinian and Israeli live together in peace (125) America will our part (126) In Annapolis in November, the United States Israeli and Palestinian leaders (132) I was impressed by their commitment to move forward (133) And by supporting the legitimate aspirations of both sides, we will encourage reconciliation between the Israeli and Palestinian people, foster reconciliation between Israelis and Arabs, and build a foundation for lasting peace that will contribute to the security of every state in the Gulf (134) And as you build a Middle East growing in peace and prosperity, the United States will be your partner (135) As we have done in places from Asia to Europe, we have forged new relationships with friends and
