ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to investigate the conceptual metaphors of love found in the lyrics of Ed Sheeran’s song in the album “Multiply” Ed Sheeran's "X" (pronounced

"Multiply") album, released in 2014, contains a standard edition with twelve songs There are twelve songs from the album “Multiply” This album was chosen because it is popular and using metaphorical images to depict the tumultuous journey of a romantic relationship The research focuses on identifying the source domains used to convey love through these metaphors The study used qualitative methods and content analysis method Data are collected from song lyrics, and the analysis involves a detailed examination of these lyrics

to understand underlying concepts and themes The findings pointed to eleven distinct source domains used to express the concept of love metaphorically These include journey, madness/insanity, container, natural force, pain/torture, fire, closeness, physical force, hidden object, desire, music, and beauty Each source domain provides a unique interpretation of love, illustrating how the abstract concept can be understood through more concrete imagery This study hopefully supplies some implications for helping language users understand conceptual metaphors, aiding translators in comprehending conceptual metaphor theory to improve translations of figurative language, and improving communication by understanding the conceptual metaphors of love in songs

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION 1.1 Rationale

In this day and age, the use of language is a means of communication, and people are unable to communicate with others without language The primary function of language is

to allow humans to express their emotions, and figurative is a common way for people to express their emotions

Theoretically, the c onceptual metaphor (CMT) was developed by Lakoff and Johnson (1980) They argue that “The essence of metaphor is understanding and experiencing one kind of thing in terms of another.” (Lakoff & Johnson 1980, p.5), and that CMT are mostly used to describe rather abstract conceptual domains with conceptual domains that are somewhat easier to grasp Besides, conceptual metaphors express emotions and inspiration

in songwriting, making song lyrics more gorgeous and coherent For musicians, using love

metaphors is crucial to portraying love as an emotion, a way of life, and a crucial part of life

Ed Sheeran, a famous contemporary songwriter and singer has composed many love songs Through his storytelling and melodic composition, Ed Sheeran effectively portrays the multifaceted nature of love Therefore, the researcher is curious how he metaphorically

describes love in his songs

There are some previous researchers which examined about the love values of the Ed

Sheeran’s songs Previous representative research on this topic is "Cognitive Linguistic

Analysis Of Love Metaphors In Ed Sheeran's Songs" by Dicky Wisnu Pradikta (2017) This research analyzes the conceptual metaphors of love in the lyrics of Ed Sheeran's songs

Another research is "Conceptual Metaphors Of Love In Lyrics By Ed Sheeran's Songs" by

Le Thi Hong (2021) This study accounts for an investigation of conceptual metaphors of love in lyrics by Ed Sheeran's songs in the framework theory of Lakoff and Johnson (1980/2003), Kovecses (2002) However, both studies only analyzed some selected songs from Ed Sheeran's

Practically, conceptual metaphors is typically viewed as characteristic of language alone, a matter of words rather than thought For this reason, most people think they can get along perfectly well without CMT Conceptual metaphors are often overlooked in resources for language translators, remaining unnoticed due to their implicit nature From these above reasons, the study will focus on conceptual metaphors of love in Ed

Sheeran's "Multiply" album.

1.2 Aims and objectives of study

The study aims to find conceptual metaphors of love in song lyrics by Ed Sheeran's

"Multiply" album to help English learners understand conceptual, helping translators navigate linguistic and cultural differences to convey the conceptual metaphors' meanings effectively

In order to achieve the aims, the study has some objectives:

— To examine the conceptual metaphors utilized in song lyrics by Ed Sheeran's

"Multiply" aloum to portray different aspects of love

— To identify conceptual metaphors and analyze their accessibility when translating song lyrics in general and other documents in particular

— To emphasize the pervasive presence of conceptual metaphor in everyday life and its importance in language learning and understanding

1.3 Research question

To achieve the aims and objectives mentioned above, the following research questions

are proposed:

1 How do the conceptual metaphors used in the lyrics of Ed Sheeran's songs depict perspectives of love?

2 What is the importance of identifying and analyzing conceptual metaphors in translation?

3 How does conceptual metaphor's pervasive presence in everyday life contribute to language learning and understanding?

1.4 Scope of the study

The scope of the research is mainly focused on three conceptual metaphors of love

in song lyrics by Ed Sheeran's “Multiply” album Album "Multiply" standard edition has

12 songs Many things can be analyzed in the songs But in this research, the researcher focuses solely on analyzing the love values expressed in Ed Sheeran's song lyrics and three conceptual metaphors are: structural metaphor, ontological metaphor and

orientational metaphor

1.5 Methodology

This research was based on qualitative research Qualitative research relies on text

or image data and usually has unique steps in analyzing the data (Creswell, 2014)

Qualitative research used to gather in-depth insights into a problem or generate new ideas

for research, involves collecting and analyzing non-numerical data to understand concepts, and opinions According to Kripendoff (1989), content analysis is indigenous communication research and probably the most important research method in social science Content analysis is a research technique in which documents are interpreted by the

researcher to give voice and meaning to the assessment topic Content analysis seeks to

identify the characteristics of the materials The content of this research is Ed Sheeran‘s

song lyrics This study analyzes the conceptual metaphors of love and the source domains used in the CM to convey love in the lyrics of Ed Sheeran‘s songs

1.6 Significance of the study

Theoretically, this study seeks to understand the theoretical basis of CMT Applying

CMT to the song enhances the theoretical understanding of how metaphorical language

structures and reflects complex emotions The study provides insights into how abstract emotions are represented through metaphors by studying love metaphors are employed in

Ed Sheeran‘s songs from the album “Multiply”

Practically, the study is expected to be used for English learners Understanding conceptual metaphors of love in songs helps us utilize effective stylistics to improve communication Hopefully, it can provide them with insights on how to approach CMT

Besides that, this research is conducted to provide additional data for teaching linguistics

This research is designed to give an outline for teaching about metaphors, particularly CMT The study will also benefit translators weighing the benefits of using unconventional CMT in the target language to enhance understanding of figurative expressions This approach may minimize the necessity for rephrasing with literal language and prevent misinterpretation caused by misrepresenting figurative expressions 1.7 Structure of the study

To gain the above goals, the study is divided into five chapters:

Chapter |, Introduction, deals with the rationale to choose the thesis, the aims, the objectives, the scope, the significance of the thesis

Chapter II, Literature Review, summarizes the results of the previous studies in

English and Vietnamese in order to build the theoretical background for the study

Chapter III, Methodology, points out the research approach, describes the methods and materials used in doing the research including data collection and analyzing techniques
