THANH HOA EDUCATION&TRAINING DEPARTMENT NGOCLAC EDUCATION &TRAINING OFFICE EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE INITIATIVES USING SOME VIETNAMESE FOLK GAMES TO MOTIVATE STUDENTS OF GRADE AT NGOC KHE II PRIMARY SCHOOL IN ENGLISH LESSONS Writer: Nguyen Thi Loan Job: Teacher Working place: Ngoc Khe II Primary school Experience initiatives’ subject: English ` THANH HOA, YEAR 2021 LUAN VAN CHAT LUONG download : add luanvanchat@agmail.com CATALOGUE Number Contents Page INTRODUCTION 1.1 THE PURPOSE OF CHOOSING THE TOPIC 1.2 RESEARCH PURPOSE 1.3 RESEARCH SUBJECTS 1.4 RESEARCH METHODS CONTENTS OF THE INITIATIVE EXPERIENCE 2.1 THEORETICAL BASIS INITIATIVE EXPERIENCE 2.2 THE SITUATION PROBLEM 2.3 THE SOLUTION USED TO SOLVE PROBLEMS 2.4 EFFECTIVENESS EXPERIENCE 14 OF OF OF THE INITIATIVE CONCLUSION 15 3.1 CONCLUDE 15 3.2 SUGGEST 16 REFERENCE MATERIALS 17 CATALOGUE OF THE INITIATIVE EXPERIENCES WERE QUALIFIED IN THE PAST FEW YEARS 18 LUAN VAN CHAT LUONG download : add luanvanchat@agmail.com INTRODUCTION Today, English is the most widely used language, it has become the native language of many countries, and is the language of communication between people all over the world With the trend of international integration, Vietnam is increasingly promoting its available capabilities in all fields Communication language has become a powerful and prerequisite tool Vietnamese people have considered English as the most communicative language in the modern world, attaching great importance to and bringing English as a core subject in schools, even at primary level As a teacher of English, I always want my students to be able to understand the lessons quickly and actively, especially they can apply their learned knowledge into practical communication Therefore, I myself always have a sense of exploring and innovating teaching methods so that every class, students are interested in learning, actively practicing and remembering lessons in class In the course of teaching, I have found that the number of students interested in learning English is not high So I have always been thinking about how to make them learn English in a fun and rewarding way In addition to the vivid visuals, I also organize game activities so that the children can better grasp the cards Through the games, the children will acquire the knowledge and ability to apply language in communication easily; solidly reinforce knowledge, giving them passion and interest in learning I still let them play foreign games such as: Bingo, slap the board, noughts and crosses, lucky number or matching …… But the games that I used in the past, they were all too familiar, easily caused boredom So I am always thinking, changing the game to help them feel more unfamiliar and more interested in learning On the journey to find new games to help students enjoy learning English, I found the idea of applying some Vietnamese folk games to students' language activities, stemming from the fact that in Vietnam, we have an extremely rich collection of folk games Personally, I believe that life still operates its steps towards modernization and a more modern day, but that does not mean that all traditional values are "out of date" It would be great if we could preserve and promote the traditional culture of the nation even in the process of teaching and learning an international language Since then, I boldly applied the initiative "Using some VietNamese folk games to motivate students of grade at Ngoc Khe II Primary school in English lessons ” LUAN VAN CHAT LUONG download : add luanvanchat@agmail.com 1.1.1 THE PURPOSE OF CHOOSING THE TOPIC In real life, children learn through playing, especially they like playing games Therefore, using games in English classes can help children’s language learning Moreover, games create a child - friendly learning environment which help teachers have more chance to develop students’speaking skill From my thoughts and experiences above I research this topic 1.2 RESEARCH PURPOSE When I write this idea, I would like to contribute my small part to motivate primary pupils feel like learning this second language and gain better grade 1.3 RESEARCH SUBJECTS In my topic, I just focus on some VietNamese folk games that I used in my class to make my lesson more interesting 1.4 RESEARCH METHODS 1.4.1 Research based on observation methods: attending workshops about techniques of teaching primary pupils, Or classes of my colleagues 1.4.2 Research based on practice: Teaching with the attendance of some colleagues then discuss to learn from each other 1.4.3 Research based on studying materials related to designing games for primary lesson CONTENTS OF THE INITIATIVE EXPERIENCE 2.1 THEORETICAL BASIS OF INITIATIVE EXPERIENCE In the actual process of teaching, I find it necessary to integrate language games into a foreign language A lesson of foreign language will be very boring if we not know how to soften it Learners will feel tired and difficult to absorb if the teacher does not know how to organize lessons in a dynamic and flexible way Language games are integrated into the teaching phases in a language lesson at the right time, right place, right purpose, the learners' learning will increase many times more effectively, which will help the lesson become LUAN VAN CHAT LUONG download : add luanvanchat@agmail.com successful Through teaching practice, I find that students are very interested in the language games that I offer The games here are not merely entertaining games, but also a rewarding playground that attracts all subjects where students have the opportunity to use language naturally on occasion They also have a chance to show, try, expand and receive the knowledge every day Since then, teachers also have the opportunity to test students' knowledge naturally, not under heavy pressure Thus, it is not at all useless time-consuming games, but on the contrary, that playground allows students to actively participate in learning and training activities such as organizing recording games winners and losers may create a healthy competitive atmosphere, create habits and skills in using foreign languages with the positive support of consciousness, avoid the situation of machine training , far from reality In fact, I have applied these games to many English classes and the results have also achieved the desired success Students not only absorb knowledge in a gentle, exciting and effective way, but are also "addicted" to this seemingly difficult and hard subject 2.2 THE SITUATION OF THE PROBLEM 2.2.1 Advantages 2.2.1.1 On the part of teachers - Nowadays, there are so many textbooks, tapes or videos that provide kinds of games to motivate children to learn English Besides, Teachers are sometimes attended workshops that encourage teachers to use games and songs to consolidate knowledge - Have to access and use of new methods in teaching - Creativity, learn some appropriate teaching compatible with the content of the lecture - Teachers use modern equipment well such as computers, speakers, projectors, -Teachers should use body language in teaching if necessary 2.2.1.2 On the part of students - The majority of school students are eager to be taught this new language LUAN VAN CHAT LUONG download : add luanvanchat@agmail.com - They are very active and so industrious - They are so much interested in playing new games 2.2.2 Disadvantages Besides the above advantages, teachers and students exist back: 2.2.2.1 On the part of teachers Teachers also use several methods that are not child –friendly for primary pupils, so children sometimes don’t know the reason why they have to learn the lessons which make teaching and learning no meaningful 2.2.2.2 Teaching equipment Equipment used for teaching English is limited Some equipments are spoiled or outdated inconsistent with teaching More importantly, there is no function room which is also a challenge with teachers to organize a game or turn on music without any noise to other classes around 2.2.2.3 On the part of students Pupils have no chance to practice at home because there is no English environment around them So school time to learn English is rather little Moreover, some children are shy to communicate in English However, primary school age psychology and English is a completely new language to them, most of them not have effective learning methods On the side of parents, it is also very difficult to test or guide the children to self-study at home because foreign language is not well known by all parents In addition, students are less able to communicate in English and they are also afraid to communicate and exchange in English outside of school hours Therefore, their learning is still limited, many of them are afraid of English Before I put this method into practice, I did a survey about how positive students were in classroom language activities and got the following results: Class Not positive Nomal Num Num Positive Very positive Num Num Sts % % % % LUAN VAN CHAT LUONG download : add luanvanchat@agmail.com 4A1 37 13 35,1 15 40,6 18,9 5,4 4A2 41 14 34,1 17 41,5 19,5 4,9 Total 78 27 34,6 32 41,0 15 19,2 5,2 Through the survey results, I realize that the number of students who are not active in the learning process is still high, the number of students who are active and very active in the subject is not high This is also the current situation that still exists in many schools in Ngoc Lac district 2.3 THE SOLUTION USED TO SOLVE PROBLEMS 2.3.1.Using VietNamese traditional games in English lessons to build up students’ skills: The folk game is not just children's game, but it contains the unique and rich Vietnamese national culture, not only giving wings to children's hearts, helping to develop thinking, bright creation, but also help children understand the friendship and love family, homeland, country Folk games have extremely great historical, cultural and scientific value, contributing to the formation of resilience, resilience and the sense of rise in difficult circumstances and winning each child people, each community of people in extreme circumstances, under unfavorable conditions However, in the era of science and technology development, cultural exchange and acculturation and the direct and indirect influence of many new cultural trends, along with the strong impact of the market mechanism has led to negative changes in the folk games of the peoples In particular, the value of the game is in danger of eroding Therefore, in recent school years, the Ministry of Education and Training always encourages the introduction of folk games in schools so that folk games can be resurrected in schools I myself, a teacher of English, also want to make a small contribution to preserving and promoting the folk games of the nation So I bravely explored and modified some Vietnamese folk games during English lessons, in addition to contributing to educating students about patriotism, national pride also contributes to enrich the game Playing helps students increase their interest in learning English, an arguably new and difficult subject in primary school Here I would like to introduce some specific folk games that I have applied in my teaching process: LUAN VAN CHAT LUONG download : add luanvanchat@agmail.com 2.3.1.1 The game “ Blind man’s bluff ” -
