Additionally, after finishing this graduate paper, I am able to accomplish objectives such as expanding my vocabulary, detecting and resolving difficulties in analyzing complex words and structures, and removing linguistic obstacles for Vietnamese readers who are interested in this subject 1.3 Scope of the Study This graduation paper is about the story “Beautiful World, Where Are You” It is translated from the original version and given the analysis of a suggested translation of the text However, within the scope of the paper and due to time limitations, this paper only focuses on some first parts of the book with 4.489 words Besides, the study also discusses some difficult vocabulary and grammar that I came across while translating 1.3.1 Text Features The book “Beautiful World, Where Are You” is a work by Sally Rooney - the Ireland writer, and it is her third and latest novel This book belongs to the genre of contemporary fiction The book revolves around the four characters Alice, Felix, Eileen, and Simon, as well as their ups and downs in life, including their friendship and romance Her book has 368 pages This book just includes chapter numbers and no content titles The chapters that I choose in the book are chapters and The main content of chapter is about the GRADUATION PAPER  Supervisor: Bui Thi Kim Phung ,M.A 64 Suggested translation: Một nhìn thống qua họ dường xác nhận anh mong đợi nhiều lời giải thích Example 20: She asked if his parents were still living locally [p.11] Main clause Noun clause In this sentence, noun clause “if his parents were still living locally” is used as an object of the verb “asked” Suggested translation: Cơ hỏi bố mẹ anh có sống không 4.2.4.2 Relative Clauses A complex clause with relative clauses includes one independent clause and at least one relative clause, often known as the adjective clause and serving as an adjective This clause is frequently used to describe or complement a word or phrase in another clause Example 21: You’re the one who suggested the hotel [p.7] Independent clause Defining relative clause The defining relative clause is used to modify the noun phrase “the one” Suggested translation: “Bạn người đề xuất khách sạn” GRADUATION PAPER  Supervisor: Bui Thi Kim Phung ,M.A 65 Example 22: She glanced at the screen of her phone, on which was displayed a messaging interface, and then looked back at the door again [p.1] Independent clause: She glanced at the screen of her phone and then looked back at the door again Dependent clause: on which was displayed a messaging interface In this complex sentence, the non-defining relative clause modifies the noun phrase “the screen of her phone” Suggested translation: Cô liếc nhìn hình điện thoại mình, hiển thị giao diện nhắn tin, lại nhìn cửa 4.2.4.3 Adverbial Clauses An adverbial clause is a clause that acts as an adverb in a sentence, adding meaning to another clause There are many types of adverb clauses such as effect, cause, place, time, manner, etc Example 23: He stood in the doorway while she went searching in one of the presses [p.19] Independent clause Adverbial clause In this complex sentence, the adverbial clause of time was used as a dependent clause Suggested translation: Anh đứng ngưỡng cửa ấn nút lị sưởi Example 24: As if sensing a new significance in this question, she GRADUATION PAPER  Supervisor: Bui Thi Kim Phung ,M.A 66 Adverbial clause Independent clause glanced at him once more and then went back to pouring the water[p.10] In this complex sentence, the adverbial clause of manner was used as a dependent clause Suggested translation: Như thể cảm nhận ý nghĩa khác câu hỏi này, liếc nhìn anh lần quay lại rót nước Example 25: He yawned unselfconsciously and looked out the window, Independent clause or rather at the window, since it was dark out now and the glass only Adverbial clause Reflected the interior of the room [p.20] In this complex sentence, the adverbial clause of reason was used as a dependent clause Suggested translation: Anh vơ thức ngáp dài nhìn ngồi cửa sổ, hay nhìn cửa sổ, lúc trời tối kính phản chiếu bên phòng GRADUATION PAPER  Supervisor: Bui Thi Kim Phung ,M.A 67 4.2.5 Compound-Complex Sentences Example 26: The waitress asked how he was getting on, and he answered: Independent clause Dependent clause Independent clause Good yeah, yourself? [p.3] In this sentence,the dependent clause is noun clause to be an object of verb “asked “ of the first independent clause They are linked with the second independent clause by a comma and the conjunction “and” All of them make a compound-complex sentence Suggested translation: Nhân viên phục vụ hỏi thăm sức khỏe anh, anh trả lời: Tốt lắm, bạn? Example 27: About ten days ago, I went out on a date with someone Independent clause who worked in a shipping warehouse, and he absolutely despised me [p.32] Dependent clause Independent clause This composite sentence has two independent clauses and one dependent clause The dependent clause is a relative clause with a relative pronoun as subject “who” modifies GRADUATION PAPER  Supervisor: Bui Thi Kim Phung ,M.A 68 “someone” of the first dependent clause They are linked with the second independent clause by a comma and the conjunction “and” Suggested translation: Khoảng mười ngày trước, tơi có hẹn hò với người làm kho vận chuyển hồn tồn coi thường tơi 4.2.6 Dummy Subjects A complete sentence must be composed by a subject and at least a verb However, in many situations, we don’t know the subject or the subject is too long, so we will use dummy subjects "It" and "there" are two common dummy subjects 4.2.6.1 “It” as a Dummy Subject “It” is often used as a dummy subject with adjectives and their complement Example 28: It was four minutes past seven, and then five, six minutes past [p.1] In this sentence, the author used “it” as a dummy subject Based on the context, we can understand that “it” is used to indicate time Hence, I decided to translate the dummy subject “it” into Vietnamese as “Giờ” Suggested translation: Giờ bảy bốn phút, sau năm, sáu phút Example 29: … it was too dark after all [p.11] In English, the dummy subject “it” is often used in the sentence about time, date, weather, etc In this example, the author used the dummy subject “it” is used to describe the ,M.A 70 4.2.6.2 “There” as a Dummy Subject "There" serves as a dummy subject in the constructions there is and there are, according to Cambridge Dictionary "There is/are" denotes that something or someone exists or is present in a specific location or circumstance Example 30: I mean, there’s not much in the way of people moving here, usually [p.5] Based on the context and individual viewpoint, the dummy subject “there” to indicate the existence of “not much in the way of people moving here” Therefore, I decided to use the word “có” as an equivalent subject in the sentence Suggested translation: Ý là, thông thường nhiều người chuyển đến GRADUATION PAPER  Supervisor: Bui Thi Kim Phung ,M.A 71 CHAPTER DIFFICULTIES AND SOLUTIONS 5.1 Difficulties In the process of completing my graduation, my supervisor was a huge help to me Furthermore, I have the opportunity to apply the knowledge I have gained from Duy Tan University’s English faculty over the last four years However, besides the advantages, I also encountered some difficulties as follows Firstly, when I decided to translate this book, I was really nervous I'm not sure if I’ll be able to finish it well because it's my first time trying the novel translation genre Secondly, due to a lack of vocabulary, I find it difficult to translate There are many figures of speech and idioms, and some words have multiple meanings, therefore I am perplexed as to how to choose the appropriate meaning while also conveying the author's hidden meanings Besides, some words are not in the dictionary and not fit the situation, which is a challenge for me Thirdly, complex structures including relative clauses, noun clauses, compound-complex sentences and so on often confuse me during translation Finally, I was under pressure in translating the source language into the target language appropriately so that the readers would completely understand the original version’s meanings GRADUATION PAPER  Supervisor: Bui Thi Kim Phung ,M.A 72 5.2 Solutions In the translation process, meeting up with difficulties is inevitable However, I always attempt to find the best solutions to go through and complete this project Firstly, I read the entire original text to obtain the author's basic idea before translating, so that I could cover the content of the text and have an overall view During this process, I also concentrated on and marked all of the tough words and sentences that I found difficult to translate Besides, I highlight structures that perplex or baffle me Then I'll reread them thoroughly and my best to translate them Secondly, dictionaries are a must-have for translators Therefore, I investigated and chose the most reliable dictionaries to assure the accuracy of the translation However, it is not always possible to find the meaning of a word in a dictionary Therefore, I occasionally rely on the context of the text and apply my knowledge to interpret the translated sentence as accurately as possible Thirdly, with the challenging structures, I would carefully analyze them to determine their elements If there are any structures that I wasn’t sure or didn’t remember, I would review them in order to get the best result In addition, for accurate analysis and translation, a thorough understanding of word function or phrase structure is required Understanding the target organize my time so that I can complete my graduation paper to the best of my ability CHAPTER CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTIONS 6.1 Conclusion In the process of completing my graduation paper, I realized I had a lot of flaws I learned a lot of knowledge and abilities to become an excellent translator during my four years at university However, as I wrote my graduation paper, I recognized that what I had learned was merely a small fraction of a larger body of knowledge This paper has aided in the development of my analytical and expressive abilities In addition, during the course of the analysis, I acquired a lot of knowledge and experience First of all, through the translating process, I have learned many new English words and phrases Furthermore, I am aware that having a wide Vietnamese vocabulary is critical Possessing a flexible block of Vietnamese linguistic knowledge GRADUATION PAPER  Supervisor: Bui Thi Kim Phung ,M.A 74 will allow us to readily express the language and make it easier for readers to grasp Next, regarding grammar, despite having learned almost every grammar point at Duy Tan University, I was still perplexed when confronted with sophisticated structures However, I see this as an opportunity to practice Especially, when translating a certain field, the specific knowledge about it plays a significant role in obtaining an accurate translation However, as you know, although the material I translate is a literary document, I not have much knowledge in this field Therefore, I was confronted with numerous challenges After a while of attempting to locate and research information in this sector, I obtained a lot of knowledge as well as a reasonable method of translation Finally, I know that now I have a lot of translation problems Therefore, to be a successful interpreter, I must always strive to learn and improve my knowledge and skills further 6.2 Suggestions 6.2.1 Suggestions for Students After four years of majoring in English Translation and Interpretation at Duy Tan University I have some suggestions for fellow students in the same field in the hopes that you would study more efficiently Firstly, students must equip themselves with information in many fields because they will meet numerous documents in many different fields later on, so having background GRADUATION PAPER  Supervisor: Bui Thi Kim Phung ,M.A 75 knowledge is critical Besides, students with a background in that field will be able to prevent several confusion throughout the translation process Secondly, vocabulary and grammar are two important factors in the establishment and construction of English, as well as any other language In terms of vocabulary, students should read books and connect to online learning platforms to hone their new words In terms of grammar, students should select trustworthy and official books or websites to assure the accuracy of their knowledge Finally, students need to improve more than their mother tongue In many cases, students fully get what the author is expressing However, because they not have a vocabulary in their mother tongue, they are unable to articulate that idea in Vietnamese Thus, improving Vietnamese will allow them to translate more effortlessly, smoothly, and engagingly 6.2.2 Suggestions for Faculty of English From my perspective, Duy Tan University, particularly the Faculty of English, has developed the best possible learning for students However, I have some suggestions for my Faculty, and I hope that these proposals will be valuable to the English Faculty Firstly, the English Faculty should provide students with opportunities to experience practical English courses in order for students to improve their English Such experience will allow students to gain more practical knowledge, which will GRADUATION PAPER  Supervisor: Bui Thi Kim Phung ,M.A 76 allow them to readily access and integrate into the working environment later on Secondly, I hope that the faculty will establish more clubs where students can exchange ideas and learn, as well as hone and enhance their limited abilities Finally, because my major is translation and interpretation, I wish that the faculty will lengthen the translation and interpretation course so that teachers have more time to refine their skills and provide students with specialized knowledge GRADUATION PAPER 
