As a person who loves and wants to learn about historical stories from ancient times to modern times, especially in Ancient Egypt, I was attracted immediately to it and decided to choose the book "The Orion Mystery: Unlocking The Secrets of the Pyramid", written by Adrian Gilbert and Robert Bauval for my graduation paper There are numerous attractive backgrounds in this book, but in this graduation paper, I would like to introduce the Great Pyramid of Giza - one of seven wonders of the world that have survived almost intact at present My paper is “An Analysis of the Suggested Translation of Chapter II from the Book "The Orion Mystery: Unlocking The Secrets of the Pyramids" By Robert Bauval and Adrian Gilbert, 2001”.” 1.2 Aims and Objectives 1.2.1 Aims - Getting more experiences in translation - Understanding the idea of authors and expressing content to readers - Finding out the difficulties during translation time - Improving the translation skills smoothly and naturally 1.2.2 Objectives Student: Pham Thi Ngoan Supervisor: Vo Thi Phuong Thao Graduation paper Faculty of English - Analyzing complex and difficult vocabularies, phrases, sentences, and structures in the text - Summing up the knowledge I learned in the past - Using methods of translation correctly and efficiently - Using the official dictionary such as Cambridge, Longman, Oxford,… 1.3 The Scope of the Study This study focuses on translating and analyzing the suggested version in parts V, VI of chapter II of the book “The Orion Mystery: Unlocking The Secrets of the Pyramid” Furthermore, this graduation paper lists difficulties that I have to struggle with translation process and the semantic features of the pyramid and ancient Egypt, the syntactic features of phrases, and sentences 1.3.1 Text Features “The Orion Mystery: Unlocking The Secrets of the Pyramid” is written by two authors British author and historian Adrian Gilbert and Egyptian researcher Robert Bauval It is one of the top of popular books about ancient Egypt in the world The authors used astronomical data to reveal that the pyramids are not only more than just tombs but a gateway to the stars But in this education paper, I would like to provide some fascinating information about the pyramid complex at Giza as well as the Great pyramid 1.3.2 Text Length The book “The Orion Mystery: Unlocking the Secrets of the Pyramid” includes 12 chapters with 354 pages In this education paper, I want to provide some essential background inside Gpyramid to readers, so I choose chapter II, parts V and VI with 4270 words The name of chapter II is “The Mountains of the Star Gods” with “The Three Great Pyramids of Giza” and “The Great Pyramid Student: Pham Thi Ngoan Supervisor: Vo Thi Phuong Thao Graduation paper 10 Faculty of 4.2.3.2 Adjective clauses An adjective clause (relative clause) is a dependent clause that functions as an adjective; that is, it modifies a noun or pronoun Example 24: “The back of this niche has been cut away by treasure-hunters who no doubt hoped to find a secret chamber beyond.” [paragraph 25] In this sentence: + Relative clause: “who no doubt hoped to find a secret chamber beyond” works as an adjective modifying the previous noun “treasurehunters” + Relative pronoun: “who” My suggested version: “Mặt sau ngách bị đập phá kẻ săn tìm kho báu - kẻ hy vọng chắn tìm thấy phịng bí mật phía bên phòng.” Example 25: “These shafts, which have their counterparts in the King's Chamber above, were first discovered behind the walls of the chamber by a British engineer named Waynman Dixon in 1872.” above” works as an adjective modifying the previous noun “These shafts” + Relative pronoun: “which” My sugessted translation: “Năm 1872, kỹ sư người Anh-Waynman Dixon phát ống thông ẩn sau tường giống hệt với phịng Pha-ra-ơng.” Example 26: “This idea was taken up by a Victorian writer, Richard A Proctor, who wrote The Great Pyramid: Observatory, Tomb and Temple, published in 1883.” [paragraph 38] In this complex sentence: + Relative clause: “who wrote The Great Pyramid: Observatory, Tomb and Temple, published in 1883” works as an adjective modifying the previous noun “Richard A Proctor” + Relative pronoun: “who” My translated version: “Ý kiến đưa nhà văn thời Victoria, Richard A Proctor - tác giả “Đại kim tự tháp: thiên văn, lăng mộ đền thờ” xuất năm 1883.” 4.2.3.3 Adverbial clauses An adverbial clause is a dependent clause introduced by an adverbial subordinator It is used to modify the verb of the independent clause and tells time, place, manner, reason, results, purpose, concession, contrast, condition Example 27: “Thus, although no side is identical to any other, the difference between the longest and shortest is only nineteen centimetres, less than 0.08 per cent of dependent clause + The independent clause is “the difference between the longest and shortest is only nineteen centimetres, less than 0.08 per cent of the average length” + The dependent clause is “although no side is identical to any other” + Subordinator: “although” (concession) My whole sentence will be translated as: “Vì vậy, khơng có cạnh cạnh độ chênh lệch cạnh dài ngắn 19cm, 0.08% chiều dài trung bình.” Example 28: “As it lies exactly on the pyramid's east-west axis, the Queen's Chamber must have been an important aspect.” [paragraph 26] In this sentence, we have: + Independent clause: “the Queen's Chamber must have been an important aspect” + Dependent clause: “As it lies exactly on the pyramid's east-west axis” + Subordinator: “as” (reason) My suggested translation: “Bởi nằm xác trục đơng-tây kim tự tháp, phịng Hồng hậu có vị trí quan trọng, thật khó hiểu người Ai Cập cổ đại xây dựng để hủy bỏ vào phút cuối cùng.” Example 29: “When you are inside, it gives the suggested version: “Đứng phòng Đại sảnh, bạn sửng sốt, trầm trồ đảo mắt phía phịng Hồng đế góc cùng.” 4.2.4 Compound-Complex Sentences Compound-complex sentences are the most complicated sentences like the name implies A compound-complex sentence is a combination of two or more independent clauses and one (or more) dependent clauses In simple terms, an independent clause can be a sentence on its own while a dependent clause cannot be a complete sentence Example 30: “Although the pyramid contains several chambers, it is by no means a hollow building; it is mostly solid masonry and constructed from approximately 2.5 million limestone blocks.” [paragraph 11] This sentence is the complex-compound sentence including two independent clauses + The first independent clause is: “Although the pyramid contains several chambers, it is by no means a hollow building.” + The adverbial clause is: “Although the pyramid contains several chambers” + Subordinator: “although” (concession) + The sencond independent clause is: “it is mostly solid masonry and constructed from approximately 2.5 million limestone blocks.” Student: Pham Thi Ngoan Supervisor: Vo Thi Phuong Thao 4.2.5 Passive Voice The passive voice is a type of grammatical voice in which the subject is acted upon by the verb In passive-voice sentences, the subject is the receiver of the action Example 31: “The purpose of this chamber is unknown and the subject of much S V debate.” [paragraph 17] In this sentence, the structure of this passive voice sententce is: S + am/is/are +V3/ed In this sentence, the verb “are not allowed” is used in passice voice with the Present Simple Tense My suggested version: “Căn phòng xây với mục đích ẩn số trở thành chủ đề nhiều tranh luận.” Example 32: “These days visitors are not allowed into the underground chamber” S V A [paragraph 22] The structure of this sentence voice sentence is: S + am/is/are + V3/ed In this sentence, the verb “are not allowed” is used in passice voice with the Present Simple Tense My suggested version: “Ngày nay, khách tham quan không phép vào phòng tầng hầm này…” Example 33: “He was succeeded by Khafra (Chephren): who built sentence is: S+ was/were + V3/ed + by + O In this sentence, the verb “was succeeded” is used in passive voice with the Past Simple Tense My suggested version: “Người kế vị ơng Khafra (hay cịn gọi DIFFICULTIES AND SOLUTIONS 5.1 Difficulties As a student of the English Faculty, I applied many knowledge and translation skills learned in the past four years, so I successfully completed the graduation paper about the book “The Orion Mystery: Unlocking Secrets of the Pyramid” This study gave me not only a good opportunity to improve my translation skills but also a precious experience to convey the information about the Pyramid to everyone However, with the inestimable amount of knowledge, I also struggled with many difficulties during the translation process Firstly, I haven’t experienced visiting Egypt, especially The Great Pyramid; therefore, I had to spend a lot of time researching, reading, and watching information about the Giza Pyramid Complex on electronic newspapers, youtube, etc Fortunately, I found out a variety of information on it, so I could express all of the knowledge that I know in my translation Secondly, I was in the trouble with the special vocabulary as well as the structures of sentences such as the phrasal verbs, idioms, complex sentences, compound sentences, which made me confused when translating in context Besides, I also forgot several forms and grammar; thus, it was difficult for me to analyze them clearly and quickly Finally, the context of the book is very lengthy, so it took me a long time to translate and analyze Sometimes, I don’t have adequate time to learn other subjects and it made me exhausted when I made an effort to balance everything Student: Pham Thi Ngoan Supervisor: Vo Thi Phuong Thao Graduation paper 74 Faculty of English 5.2 Solutions To resolve difficulties that I faced during the translating process, I have found some solutions and gained advantageous effects Firstly, I used skimming and scanning skills to get an overview of the content that the authors wanted to express After that, I researched documents, videos, structures, and grammar related to the topic Until I started translating and analyzing, I read this text many times to guarantee that I didn’t make any mistakes That is the main factor that helps me solve problems quickly and effectively Secondly, I took notes of the difficult words, phrases, or structures and researched carefully again when I was in trouble At the time, I looked up the all definitions in many dictionaries such as Cambridge, Oxford, Longman, and Lac Viet and chose the best meaning to translate When I could not make a decision, I would ask my supervisor and friends for help Finally, I assigned a specific time to each task and completed it on time Thanks to the encouragement and caring of my family and friends, I regained my motivation and finished my graduation paper Student: Pham Thi Ngoan Supervisor: Vo Thi Phuong Thao Graduation paper 75 Faculty of English CHAPTER 6: CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTIONS 6.1 Conclusion The book “The Orion Mystery: Unlocking The Secrets of the Pyramid” is best sell book for readers interested in researching and exploring ancient Egypt and the Pyramid Thanks to this graduation paper with this book, I not only gained valuable experiences but also improved my translation skills to serve my future job Throughout the translation process, I realized that I was lacking in vocabulary in both SL and TL There are some words, phrases, and idioms that I had not understood in the text, so it was difficult and embarrassing for me to choose the correctable meaning during the translation Moreover, my limited mother tone made the inflexible and obscure translation So, I must have a rich vocabulary to be a good translator Furthermore, translators must be well-informed about the translated field Only when knowing a steady area, translators can convey the writer’s intention in the text and create the TL that attracts readers In addition to possessing a rich vocabulary, translators need to learn constantly to have a wide knowledge base for the job Finally, I had mistaken vocabulary, grammar, and syntax during translation, but I consolidated my knowledge and gained a great understanding of the field of the Great Pyramid In addition, I believe this is a helpful experience to develop my major in English as well as my translation skills for my future career 6.2 Suggestions After completing my graduation paper, I have some things to contribute to the English Faculty I hope that my suggestions will be beneficial to our university Student: Pham Thi Ngoan Supervisor: Vo Thi Phuong Thao Graduation paper 76 Faculty of English First of all, I think the 1st writing subject should be moved to the second semester of the first year Freshmen who have just left high school to enroll in college will be slacked off in their studies because of a new environment Also, the 1st writing is the most difficult and significant subject that students must understand clearly and exercise in most cases As a result, the majority of students have been refused and got bad scores when doing the tests Furthermore, I realize that students of the English Faculty are lack of environment to practice and exchange with peers or foreign teachers in school Besides the Talent and Beauty activity, the Faculty should promote some activities that create many opportunities for them to communicate and learn to speak English together Sometimes, I want to attend the English Club, but I don’t know how to describe it Finally, I think the important subjects such as the theory of translation, 1st and 2nd translation, advanced English grammar, and syntax, should be given more attention
