Should we even expect to be fulfilled and happy at work? Yes, we should, so I chose the book “HOW TO BE HAPPY AT WORK” (CHAPTER 7)” to translate and I belive it provides clear, practical advice and instruction for how to get happy at work – no matter what jobs you have I hope that with all of my knowledge and skills that I have can make a complete translation and gain high evaluation as well 1.2 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES 1.2.1 Aims - To present my ability in translating and analyzing documents - To get more knowledge about what people should to be happy at work - Understanding the ideas of the author to express the content to the readers 1.2.2 Objectives - To translate the text quickly and smoothly - To give some difficulties and solutions - To analyze complicated words, phrases, idioms and contexts, etc - To help myself improve in translating 1.3 SCOPE OF THE STUDY 1.3.1 TEXT FEATURES Student: Nguyen Thi Nhu Thuy Code: K23.701 GRADUATION PAPER 57 Supervisor: Nguyen Thi Thu Hien, M.A  Adverbial clauses of Condition: tell us about the circumstances under which something happens These clauses often begin with “if”, “unless”, or “provided that”  Adverbial Clauses of Manner: show us how something happens They usually begin with the conjunctions “like”, “as though” or “as if”  Adverbial Clauses of Cause/Reason: show why something happens These clauses begin with the conjunction “because”, “since”, and “as”  Adverbial Clauses of Effect: tell us about consequences They often begin with “so…that”, and “such… that”  Adverbial Clauses of Comparison: are used to compare things or ideas They often begin with the conjunctions “than” or “as…as”  Adverbial Clauses of Concession/Contrast: describes contrasting statements or circumstances depite which something happens They usually begin with “although”, “though”, “even if”, “even though”, “while” or “whereas”  Adverbial Clauses of Purpose: show why something is happening (the intended result) We can use “so that”, “lest” and “in order that” Example 20: “If you want to create a resonant micro-culture, start by managing the emotional tone of your team–what it feels like to be at work.” This is adverbial clause of condition - Independent clause: start by managing the emotional tone of your team–what it feels like to be at work” - Conditional clause: If you want to create a resonant micro-culture Hence, I translated this sentence into Vietnamese as following My suggested translation: Hãy bắt đầu cách quản lý cảm xúc nhóm - cảm giác làm việc, bạn muốn tạo văn hóa vi mơ cộng hưởng Student: Nguyen Thi Nhu Thuy Code: K23.701 GRADUATION PAPER 58 Supervisor: Nguyen Thi Thu Hien, M.A Example 21: “Because so many organizations are unhealthy (or downright toxic), it is important to understand how your organization's culture affects you.”[123] This is adverbial Clauses of Cause/Reason In this sentence, there is one dependent clause and one independent clause (main clause) We can analyze them as follows: - Dependent clause: Because so many organizations are unhealthy (or downright toxic) - Independent clause: it is important to understand how your organization's culture affects you  My suggested version: “Bởi nhiều tổ chức không lành mạnh (hoặc đầy tiêu cực), nên điều quan trọng phải hiểu văn hóa tổ chức ảnh hưởng đến bạn nào.” 4.2.3.2 Complex Sentences with Adjective Clauses Adjective clauses (or relative clauses) are dependent clauses that, like an adjective, modify a noun or pronoun An adjective clause begins with words such as “that”, “when”, “where”, “who”, “whom”, “whose”, “which”, and “why” Example 22: “This is particularly true when we are talking about culture that powerful force that affects how we feel, what we believe, and what we at work.” [94] This sentence has a relative clause “that powerful force that affects how we feel, what we believe, and what we at work” The pronoun “that” modifies the pronoun “culture” The clause “that powerful force that affects how we feel, what we believe, and what we at work” works as Complement My suggested translation: “Điều đặc biệt nói văn hóa - lực lượng mạnh mẽ ảnh hưởng đến cách cảm nhận, điều tin tưởng làm công việc.” Student: Nguyen Thi Nhu Thuy Code: K23.701 GRADUATION PAPER 59 Supervisor: Nguyen Thi Thu Hien, M.A 4.2.3.3 Complex Sentences with Noun Clauses Noun clauses are dependent clauses that act as a noun Noun clauses begin with words such as “how”, “that”, “what”, “whatever”, “when”, “where”, “whether”, “which”, “whichever”, “who”, “whoever”, “whom”, “whomever”, and “why” Noun clauses can act as subjects, direct objects, indirect objects, predicate nominatives, or objects of a preposition Example 23: “What drives me is the ability to make a difference in what I do.” [64] In this sentence, the author used a noun clause “What drives me” as an subject, and it is dependent clause So, I translated it into Vietnamese My suggested translation: "Điều mà hướng đến khả tạo khác biệt tơi làm." Example 24: “The good news is that we have a great deal of control over the emotional reality of our team.”[121] • The independent clause: The good new is • The dependent clause: that we have a great deal of control over the emotional reality of our team • Subordinating conjuntion : that In this sentence, the dependent clause works as a noun clause and it functions as a subject complement in this complex sentence  My suggested translation: “Tin tốt kiểm sốt tốt cảm xúc thực nhóm 4.2.4 Sentences with Passive Voice The passive voice is used when we want to emphasize the action (the verb) and the object of a sentence rather than subject This means that the subject is either less important than the action itself or that we don’t know who or what the subject is At this time, I would like to show you some sentences like in the following examples Student: Nguyen Thi Nhu Thuy Code: K23.701 GRADUATION PAPER 60 Supervisor: Nguyen Thi Thu Hien, M.A Example 25: “Everyone is supported to work hard and work smart, while also feeling good about themselves and their accomplishments.” [50]  In this sentence, the verb “supported” is used in passive structure BE + PAST PARTICIPLE This sentence is present simple tense, I decided to translate this sentence with its original structure – passive voice I realized that its meaning is still natural and smooth in our Vietnamese My suggested translation: “Tất người khuyến khích làm việc chăm thông minh, đồng thời họ cảm thấy hài lòng thân thành tích mình.” Example 26: “We find it very hard, if not impossible, to be happy when we are surrounded by misery.” Similar to example 25, the structure of this passive voice sentence is: BE + PAST PARTICIPLE In this case, I decided to translate “are surrounded” into “bị bao quanh” My suggested translation: “Khi bị bao quanh khổ đau, cảm thấy khó, khơng muốn nói khơng thể lịng.” 4.2.5 Sentences with Empty Subject English clauses which are not imperatives must have a subject Sometimes we need to use a “dummy subject” when there is no subject attcched to the verb, and where the real subject is somewhere else in the clause “IT” and “THERE” are two dummy subjects used in English Example 27: “Of course, it's nigh impossible for any one person to transform an entire organizational culture; it's just too complex and farreaching" [95] In this sentence, the authors used empty subject ''it's just too complex and far-reaching" to express their idea This form of sentence isn’t existed in Student: Nguyen Thi Nhu Thuy Code: K23.701 GRADUATION PAPER 61 Supervisor: Nguyen Thi Thu Hien, M.A Vietnamese, it’s difficult to translate it Besides, if we literally tranlate, like “nó phức tạp sâu rộng”, the suggested sentence is very rough and unnatural So, I apply the free translation method to transfer the idea, then I have a suggested version as follow My suggested translation: "Tất nhiên, gần để người thay đổi toàn tổ chức văn hóa; tổ chức văn hóa phức tạp sâu rộng.” Example 28: “There is one more thing you can that will further increase your own happiness while also helping others: create a resonant microculture on your team.” [48] In this sentence, the real subject is “one more thing” My suggested translation: “Còn điều mà bạn làm để tăng thêm hạnh phúc cho bạn đồng thời giúp đỡ người khác là: Tạo văn hóa vi mơ cộng hưởng nhóm bạn” When completing the translation, I had many interesting experiences and good lessons and I learned many useful things First and foremost, I became more proficient in choosing dictionaries to look up words, and also knew how to choose suitable meanings for words and phrases with multiple meanings Besides, sentence structures, grammar, and maxim are challenging when translating text To solve this problem, I carefully read and analyze the correct function of each part of the sentence such as subject, preposition, preposition and so on Sometimes to properly translate the material, I was given advice by the teacher Secondly, we must have a deep understanding of not only the language but also the culture of the two languages to translate In conclusion, if I want to become an expert translator in the future, I have to try to practice and improve skills Student: Nguyen Thi Nhu Thuy Code: K23.701 GRADUATION PAPER Student: Nguyen Thi Nhu Thuy 62 Supervisor: Nguyen Thi Thu Hien, M.A Code: K23.701 GRADUATION PAPER 63 Supervisor: Nguyen Thi Thu Hien, M.A CHAPTER 5: DIFFICULTIES AND SOLUTIONS 5.1 Difficulties During years of studying English at Duy Tan University, I have been highly trained in translation through classroom lessons and useful practical exercises Now, I have a thorough understanding of the essential knowledge and cultivate more knowledge; however, it is inevitable that I made some mistakes when implementing this project During the process, I realized that my knowledge was not enough to deal with all the difficult words, phrases and structures In addition, grammar, vocabulary, syntax or specific terms affect the quality of the proposed version Hence, accurately translating a text from English into Vietnamese is a great challenge First and foremost, terms of vocabulary, some words have meaning in the dictionary, there are a lot of words which can not be translated and multimeaning in the text The different meanings of this polysyllabic word often confused me and chose the wrong one to translate They are not defined in any dictionary, so I have to define them depending on the context and the writer's ideas Besides, I translated a book about science fiction and romance, so I faced many technical terms This is a challenge for me due to the lack of knowledge about keywords I realize that what I have learned is not enough to address these specific terms It emphasizes the exact equivalent, therefore, I can use typical meaning to convert it into TL Nextly, structure is also a very difficult factor that we have to pay more attention to because there are differences of grammar between languages In fact, there are serveral structures that are exact collective in English but not used in Vietnamese, for instance, empty topic structures General speaking, Student: Nguyen Thi Nhu Thuy Code: K23.701 GRADUATION PAPER 64 Supervisor: Nguyen Thi Thu Hien, M.A this is really a challenge for translators because they have to know the right structure in each language In addition, in all kinds of structures, sentences have loads of different types of clauses including relation clauses, noun clauses and adverb clauses that are really complicated We often misunderstand ideas if we not have a powerful knowledge of grammar or we are not careful to analyze sentences In conclusion, it is surely true that it is uneasy to translate a successful text To have exact versions, translators have a deeply knowledge not only about the field that they are translating, but also about structure, lexis in both languages 5.2 Solutions When things get tough, I have my own way of solving these problems using what I've learned for four years At first, I read the whole document at once The purpose of this reading is to identify the idea of the article After reading, I can summarize the whole article into a few main ideas During this process, I marked and noted all difficult words and phrases I have used many types of dictionaries, such as Oxford Dictionary, Free Dictionary, Cambridge Dictionary, etc to find the best meaning It is very important for us to take notes of difficult English sentences or common idioms and rely on a few important keywords in sentences and contextual translations Second, I define the style of the document I had to review all the nuances of language, writing style of the article I then translated the text for the first time, this time without asking too much about the wording and the sentences but it needed to be most accurate with the original text I have to separate them into sentences and see their alignment to match Student: Nguyen Thi Nhu Thuy Code: K23.701 GRADUATION PAPER 65 Supervisor: Nguyen Thi Thu Hien, M.A Moreover, I have found and read a number of materials related to this topic in the school library and on the internet These documents will provide me with a background in the field of tourism and it is very useful to solve some difficult words like technical terms In conclusion, in terms of translation, meeting the challenges is inevitable However, if we make every effort, it will not be too difficult to translate In order to improve our translation skills, I realized that I had to practice translating documents regularly to improve and improve my skills Student: Nguyen Thi Nhu Thuy Code: K23.701 GRADUATION PAPER 66 Supervisor: Nguyen Thi Thu Hien, M.A CHAPTER 6: CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTIONS 6.1 CONCLUSION It is interesting to perform on this graduation paper because I could see my translation skills in the extent During my four years at Duy Tan University, I had the chances to become familiar with translation methods through classroom lessons During the process of translating, I discovered that my vocabulary was poor, there were serveral words that I did not know the meaning of them, which made its difficult for me to translate Furthermore, the lack of Vietnamese vocabulary is also ungainly when expressing an idea into Vietnamese; therefore, improving vocabulary is actual important and necessary Besides, translating a certain field, my grammar is still weak Because of confusion about grammar and syntax, there are many sentences which I misinterpreted Through this article, I realized my shortcomings as well as a good opportunity to re-prove my understanding In addition, it is really necessary to have specific knowledge because it plays a rule Therefore, translators must study many fields with the purpose of preparing the foundation to fully understand the ideas that the author expresses Having specific knowledge will help translators easily translate correctly In the process of translating and analyzing this graduation document, I also learned many useful things My translation skills are improving day by day In many cases, I have had ways to deal with the problems in the original text to get a good version I have more experience on how to use equivalence in TL to express ideas Complex structures are also a challenge that I have to pay more Student: Nguyen Thi Nhu Thuy Code: K23.701 GRADUATION PAPER 67 Supervisor: Nguyen Thi Thu Hien, M.A attention to However, after completing my graduation papers, I can easily analyze them for best results I know that I now have many shortcomings in translation Therefore, to be a good translator, I have to constantly try to learn and improve my knowledge and skills Besides, if I want to improve my translation skills, I have to practice many times and learn more from other translators 6.2 SUGGESTIONS 6.2.1 Suggestion for Foreign Language Department at Duy Tan University In the process of learning translation, I have faced lots of difficulties I hope that teachers of Foreign Languages Department will create more chances that help students have more opportunities to practice translating Besides, l feel that English translating skills are very important, so I also hope that teachers will share more necessary knowledge such as reading comprehension, analyzing structure, using suitable words, and so on This will help students have more exact ways of translating Besides, the Foreign Language Department should also create activities such as travel or exchanges related to English culture to attract students participate in I think this is good way to get knowledge to overcome the difficulties Finally, the time of the graduation paper is limited, so students are unable to study and understand the translated text thoroughly Moreover, they have many difficulties in choosing the suitable field to translate, and appropriate translation methods Therefore, I think that the department should give students more time to look for a good document for their paper Student: Nguyen Thi Nhu Thuy Code: K23.701 GRADUATION PAPER 68 Supervisor: Nguyen Thi Thu Hien, M.A 6.2.2 Suggestion for teachers of Foreign Language Department In my opinion, I think teachers should give student more opportunities to practice analyzing many difficult structures When students understand the structure clearly, they can avoid mistakes during translting It also help them very much in the future about translation Morever, teachers should explain clearly when instructing students to translate, because there is very common that the students can translate a sentence but they don’t know why they translate like that It means they can’t analyse the elements in the sentence 6.2.3 Suggestions for students of Foreign Language Department After four years of learning at Duy Tan University, I have learnt more knowledge and translation and interpretation skills thanks to conscientious teaching of teachers in Foreign Language Department However, translating this book helped me realize that there is some knowledge that I have never known It is very necessary for students to improve the knowledge in all fields, the students will meet many documents of various fields, so having background knowledge about that field will help them avoid many confusing in translating The translator must master firmly knowledge related to grammar syntax, semantics, vocabulary, etc The translator should practice more and more various grammar exercises to enhance analyzing skill In addition, a good reading habit will help us enlarge vocabulary as well as expression in terms of the linguistic style To become a good translator, students need to improve English as well as focus on the mother tongue In many cases, the students can understand all the ideas that the author expressing However, due to lacking of vocabulary in the Student: Nguyen Thi Nhu Thuy Code: K23.701 GRADUATION PAPER 69 Supervisor: Nguyen Thi Thu Hien, M.A mother tongue, they can't express that ideas into Vietnamese Improving Vietnamese will help them translate more naturally, smoothly and more interestedly Therefore, students of translating must try to learn to have a good background of vocabulary and grammar knowledge Especially, it is necessary to practice translation as much as possible like the proverb “Practice makes perfect” Student: Nguyen Thi Nhu Thuy Code: K23.701 GRADUATION PAPER 70 Supervisor: Nguyen Thi Thu Hien, M.A REFERENCES VIETNAMESE
