Romulus and Remus, the legendary twin founders of Rome, are purported to have been cared for by wolves. It is believed that where a shewolf loses her litter, she seeks a human child to take its place. This seeming preposterous idea did not become credible until the late nineteenth century when a French doctor actually found a naked tenyearold boy wandering in the woods. He did not walk erectly, could not speak intelligibly, or could he relate to people. He only growled and stared at them. Finally, the doctor won the boys confidence and began to work with him. After many long years of devoted and patient instruction, the doctor was able to have the boy to clothe and feed him, recognize and utter a number of words, as well as write letters and form words.1.¬¬____2.____3.____4.____5.____6.____7.____8.____9.____10.____SECTION D: READING COMPREHENSION (30 pts)Question I. Read the passage and choose the best answers to the questions below.(10 pts)Tsunami is a Japanese word which means harbour wave and is used as the scientific term for seismic sea wave generated by an undersea earthquake or possibly an undersea landslide or volcanic eruption. When the ocean floor is tilted or offset during an earthquake, a set of waves is created similar to the concentric waves generated by an object dropped into the water. Most tsunamis originate along the Ring of Fire, a zone of volcanoes and seismic activity, 32.500 kilometres long that encircles the Pacific Ocean. Since 1819, about 40 tsunamis have struck the Hawaiian Islands.A tsunami can have wavelengths, or widths, of 100 to 200 km, and may travel hundreds of kilometres across the deep ocean, reaching speeds of about 725 to 800 kilometres an hour. Upon entering shallow coastal waters, the wave, which may have been only about half a metre high out at sea, suddenly grows rapidly. When the wave reaches the shore, it may be 15 m high or more. Tsunamis have tremendous energy because of the great volume of water affected. They are capable of obliterating coastal settlements.Tsunamis should not be confused with storm surges, which are domes of water that rise underneath hurricanes or cyclones and cause extensive coastal flooding when the storms reach land. Storm surges are particularly devastating if they occur at high tide. A cyclone and accompanying storm surge killed an estimated 500.000 people in Bangladesh in 1970. The tsunami which struck south and southeast Asia in late 2004 killed over 200 thousand people.71. Scientifically, tsunami is the term for _______.A. seismic sea wave. Read the following passage and then choose the correct answer A, B, C or D. (10 pts)One of the most important discoveries of the nineteenth century was a method of using natural gas for cooking and heating. Large amounts of natural gas are found in the United States, usually several feet below the surface of the earth. Natural gas is most often found in places where petroleum, the oil from which gasoline is made, is found. Often the natural gas must be removed before the oil itself can be reached. For many years after natural gas was first discovered, it was thought to have no value. Finally, however, people began to understand its use and to find ways of storing it and moving it from place to place. Today natural gas is stored in large tanks and used for lighting, cooking and heating. It has also been used for electric generators and hybrid cars recently. In many ways natural gas is one of our finest fuels. It can be used for cooking without making the room hot. It is cheap and can be moved easily from one place to another through long pipelines, some of which are hundreds of miles in length.1. It can be inferred from the passage that ________. Tsunami is a Japanese word which means harbour wave and is used as the scientific term
for seismic sea wave generated by an undersea earthquake or possibly an undersea landslide or volcanic eruption When the ocean floor is tilted or offset during an earthquake, a set of waves is
created similar to the concentric waves generated by an object dropped into the water Most
tsunamis originate along the Ring of Fire, a zone of volcanoes and seismic activity, 32.500 kilometres long that encircles the Pacific Ocean Since 1819, about 40 tsunamis have struck the Hawaiian Islands
A tsunami can have wavelengths, or widths, of 100 to 200 km, and may travel hundreds of kilometres across the deep ocean, reaching speeds of about 725 to 800 kilometres
an hour Upon entering shallow coastal waters, the wave, which may have been only about half a metre high out at sea, suddenly grows rapidly When the wave reaches the shore, it may
be 15 m high or more Tsunamis have tremendous energy because of the great volume of water affected They are capable of obliterating coastal settlements
Tsunamis should not be confused with storm surges, which are domes of water that rise underneath hurricanes or cyclones and cause extensive coastal flooding when the storms reach land Storm surges are particularly devastating if they occur at high tide A cyclone and accompanying storm surge killed an estimated 500.000 people in Bangladesh in 1970 The tsunami which struck south and southeast Asia in late 2004 killed over 200 thousand people

One of the most important discoveries of the nineteenth century was a method of using natural gas for cooking and heating Large amounts of natural gas are found in the United States, usually several feet below the surface of the earth Natural gas is most often found in places where petroleum, the oil from which gasoline is made, is found Often the natural gas must be removed before the oil itself can be reached
For many years after natural gas was first discovered, it was thought to have no value Finally, however, people began to understand its use and to find ways of storing it and moving it from place to place Today natural gas is stored in large tanks and used for lighting, cooking and heating It has also been used for electric generators and hybrid cars recently In many ways natural gas is one of our finest fuels It can be used for cooking without making the room hot It is cheap and can be moved easily from one place to another through long pipelines, some of which are hundreds of miles in length
1 It can be inferred from the passage that
A natural gas is useless
B people once wasted natural gas
C natural gas is moved in trucks
D natural gas is found where there is no petroleum

I Read the following passage and choose the best answer to each question (2 points)
KETCHUP
Trang 29The sauce that is today called ketchup (or catsup) in Western cultures is a tomato-based sauce that is quite distinct from Eastern ancestors of this product A sauce called ke-tjap was
in used in China at least as early as the 17th century, but the Chinese version of the sauce was made of picked fish, shellfish, and spices The popularity of this Chinese sauce spread to
Singapore and Malaysia, where it was called kechap The Indonesian ketjab derives its name
from the same source of the Malaysian sauce but is made from very different ingredients The Indonesian ketjab is made by cooking black soy beans, fermenting them, placing them in a salt brine for at least a week, cooking the resulting solution further, and sweetening it heavily; this process results in a dark, thick and sweet variation of soy sauce
Early in the 18th century, sailors from the British navy came across this exotic sauce on voyages to Malaysia and Singapore and brought samples of it back to England on return voyages English chefs tried to recreate the sauce but were unable to do exactly because key ingredients were unknown or unavailable in England; chefs ended up substituting ingredients such as mushrooms and walnuts in an attempt to recreate the special taste of the original
Asian sauce Variations of this sauce became quite the rage in the 18th century England, appearing in a number of recipe books and features as an exotic addition to menus from the period
The English version did not contain tomatoes, and it was not until the end of the 18thcentury that tomatoes became main ingredients in the ketchup of the United States It is quite notable that tomatoes were added to the sauce and that tomatoes had previously been
considered quite dangerous to health That tomato had been cultivated by the Aztecs, who had called it tomalt; however, early botanists had recognized that tomato was a member of the Solanecaea family, which does include a number of poisonous plant, the leaves of the
tomato plant are poisonous, though of course the fruit is not
Thomas Jefferson, who cultivated the tomato in his gardens at Monticello and served dishes containing tomatoes at lavish feasts, often receive credit for changing the reputation of the tomato Soon after Jefferson had introduced the tomato to American society, recipes combining the new fashionable tomato with the equally fashionable and exotic sauce known
as ketchap began to appear By the middle of the 19th century, both of the tomato and tomato
ketchup were stables of the American kitchen
Tomato ketchup, popular through it was, was quite time-consuming to prepare In
1876, the first mass-produced tomato ketchup, a product of German-American Henry Heizn, went on sale and achieved immediate success From tomato ketchup, Heizn branched out into
a number of other products, including various sauces, pickles, and relish
