requiring businesses to build their own corporate culture which is distinctive and modern It is very necessary but also very difficult since the formation of corporate culture requires consistency and establishment over time to adjust Sacombank Commercial Bank is a credit institution in Vietnam that has succeeded in building and forming corporate culture with the increasing growth during the period of establishment until the current operation In the current period, the companies are facing challenges to maximize operational efficiency through differentiation and innovation of products and services to create competitive advantage To achieve this goal, they must rely on the largest resources of the business that is "Human resources” Moreover, the leading enterprises have promoted the research and development to create a healthy "corporate culture" environment, with its own identity to create the link and multiply the value of precious resources I Overview about corporate culture Concept of bank corporate culture Bank corporate culture is the completely physical and mental value created by all the members of the bank who have built during the existence and development process They have had the impact on the physiology, emotion and behavior of all the members as well as the sustainable development of the banking operation Basic features of bank corporate culture Banking operation is the service operation, which has the special characteristics of money business and other services using money – special goods Therefore, the bank corporate culture also has the same features with the corporate culture but it also has its own special features The bank corporate culture has the following features: Firstly, communication culture is used popularly and frequently in the relationship between banks and customers The relationship between bank and customers is not the buying-selling relationship as normal in the market, but it is the relationship of right to use money goods The relationship between bank and customers is carried out through the communication relationship between customers and bank officers Secondly, bank culture has high cooperation level Banking products supplying to the market are usually carried out through the procedures of credit, card release, payment methods Carrying out these procedures requires bank officers and departments to have high cooperation and close attachment to ensure the quality of the products and services Therefore, bank culture has become the catalyst to motivate the cooperation among the members in the banking system Thirdly, the bank corporate culture is diverse, rich but complicated Banking organization includes a set of several people with differences in culture, genders, economic situation, characteristics, capacity, style On the other hands, banking operation has been carried out in the versatile direction, retail banking and even the customers in and outside the country Therefore, banking officer teams are required to have not only the knowledge of job contents but also partner’s value since the culture of each region and each country is different Fourthly, bank corporate culture is attached with social culture, the step and the depth of the social culture Corporate culture is the appearance of business culture in the scope of banking system It is also the whole culture factor to be chosen, used and shown in the business operation; to create the special features of each bank Roles of the bank corporate culture Culture shows vividly about all the aspects of one bank in the past, present and future time Culture has created the value system, tradition, working style and behavior Based on these, each bank can assert its own power and special features In practice, culture plays an important role in the business operation of each bank The specifics are as followings: - Corporate culture is the big internal resource to ensure the sustainable development of each bank - Corporate culture can create the special character for the bank and it is the basis to help the customers differentiate and choose the products and services of the bank - Corporate culture plays a role in increasing the value of the products that the banks provide Basic contents of the bank corporate culture Bank culture is due to the contribution of all the bank staff but it also has the reverse impact on every bank member In addition, it contributes to cultivate the good characteristics of people Building the corporate culture includes the following contents: Business philosophy in the bank: Business philosophy is the ideal, principle and action motto to make the bank operation more effectively The business philosophy has outlined the targets, implementation methods and the ethics value for every member so that it is the core of corporate style, the nuclear and pillar of corporate culture Therefore, business philosophy of the bank is formed based on the objective demand of banking operation In addition, it is summarized by leader board and becomes the principles and purpose for every member of banking operation Tradition, working style and ritual of banking operation If business philosophy is the soul and basis of corporate culture, tradition, ceremony style is built and maintained in the banking operation They are the important parts in bank culture since they reflect the way of living, working style and tradition, which have been built, maintained and developed by the bank Tradition, style and ceremony of the bank are built based on the value of the business philosophy in the bank Therefore, they have become the ethics standard that all bank members have to carry out and show as the followings: - Working style: the working style of each bank is shown by each individual, from the leader to the members Bank operation that wants to be effective requires the bank staffs to have professional working style and show different aspects: working on time; complying the working principles; knowing how to use all means – modern technology; enthusiastic in working; able to team work; good communication skills; complying all the rules and principles of the bank - The standards in attitude, behaviors, internal communication: behavior and communication style are the important contents in everyday operation of the bank The communication skills of bank staff must show the standard and beauty of culture such as politeness, respect, opening, modesty to customers - The relationship between individuals and working environment of the bank: Bank is the organization with several branched and staff Its power and operation effectiveness belong to the relationship within the bank and the cooperation among the bank members This relationship can be shown through the leader board with the officers and among the officers To have the officer team with high dedication, creation and willingness in working, it requires the opening relationship between the leader and officers Each party should be honest, opening, and straight and especially respect each other Good working environment in the bank should be open, honest and transparent In addition, all the members should have better knowledge and respect with each other This is the environment to help the best development and promotion of the relationship between people in increasing the business effectiveness Therefore, most of the bank leaders often concentrate on building the best working environment For example, the director of Vietnam International Commercial Bank said, “We have created the working culture; it means that when we estimate people, we need to consider the working effectiveness If we want effectiveness, we need to create good working environment” Value system In fact, the successful banks are the banks that can build the suitable culture value with the practical operation of the bank The value here can be understood as quality and good capacity that each member of the bank has to try to achieve and maintain it This value table has both legal and teaching characteristics However, the teaching characteristics and culture education are more important The value system of bank is built based on the concepts about truth – goodness – beauty Truth is the concept about the right, the needs to and the example to follow Parallel to it, it is crucial to find out the wrong things and avoid them in the banking operation The second is the concept about the goodness It is the basis to form the ethics standards in banking operation and even to the action and behavior of bank staff The third one is the concept about the beauty; perfectness and sacrifice that each member of the bank wants to achieve, maintain and protect it Based on the concepts above, the bank leaders get used to build the culture values and arrange them in the right order in accordance with their importance This helps to form the culture value of the bank as followings: - Moral integrity, honesty, dedication and creativity at work - Solidarity and cooperation in working - Strive to get quality - Meet the customer demand - Respect and acquiescence - Comply to the law and principle standard of the bank Therefore, the value system will be the basis that the bank management board uses to get the banking ethics standards The core contents are moral integrity, honesty and dedication to the development of the bank and customers; respect customers; increasing the quality; getting the effectiveness; fighting to the challenges and taking care of social responsibility They are the standards that every bank member wants to achieve Cultural activities and team activities of the bank Cultural activities are the diverse activities that are held under several ways in the anniversary day of the establishment of the bank; introduction days of bank products, services and technology to customers; sport competition; art competition; communication skill competition; birthday parties; ceremony to honor good individuals in business operation… The cultural activities and team activities, which are held and maintained frequently in the bank, will become the tradition and special culture for all the bank members and make them highly dedicate to the value of banking operation III CORPORATE CULTURE IN THE OPERATION OF SACOMBANK COMMERCIAL JOINT-STOCK COMPANY Bank introduction : Formally established and came into operation on 21 December 1991, Sacombank starting point was a small bank in the difficult period of the country with an initial chartered capital of 03 billion and worked mainly in coastal of Ho Chi Minh City After more than 17 years of operation, Sacombank has become the biggest commercial bank in Vietnam » Charter capital is VND 5,116 billion and the own capital is VND 6,927 billion » Nearly 250 branches and transaction offices in 44/63 provinces and cities nationwide, 01 representative office in China and 01 branches in Laos;
