Sách Understanding Academic Words for IELTS Writing Task 1 được biên soạn nhằm giúp người học IELTS khắc phục vấn đề khan hiếm từ vựng và cấu trúc để miêu tả biểu đồ một cách tự nhiên và linh hoạt. Một trong những trăn trở của người học IELTS Writing là việc khó có thể tìm kiếm một tư liệu hệ thống từ vựng và cấu trúc một cách bài bản, đồng thời giải thích cặn kẽ ngữ nghĩa, cách sử dụng và cung cấp bài luyện tập để thí sinh có thể áp dụng ngay kiến thức đã học. Việc học từ không chỉ dừng lại ở sự tiếp xúc với từ vựng qua văn bản nghe/nói, mà còn là sự hiểu sâu rộng về ngữ nghĩa, văn phạm của từ cũng như cần được thực hành nhiều lần thông qua các bài tập ứng dụng. Đây chính là giá trị mà ấn phẩm này muốn đem đến cho người học. Cuốn sách bao gồm 6 chương tương ứng với 6 dạng bài trong Writing Task 1, đó là: Maps (Bản đồ), Process (Quy trình), Table (Bảng biểu), Line Graph (Biểu đồ đường), Pie Chart (Biểu đồ tròn) và Bar Chart (Biểu đồ cột). Trong đó, mỗi chương sẽ bao gồm 3 phần chính: Phần 1: bao gồm Sample (Bài mẫu) và Analysis (Phân tích). Phần này tập trung cung cấp những bài mẫu có band 7.0+, những cụm từ hay được in đậm và phần phân tích cách sử dụng những cụm từ này ở những ví dụ khác nhau, giúp người học có thể hiểu được ngữ nghĩa và cách sử dụng chúng. Phần 2: bao gồm phần Practice (Luyện tập). Phần này cung cấp 3 dạng bài luyện tập chính giúp người học ôn lại những cụm từ đã gặp ở phần Sample (Bài mẫu). Các dạng bài trong sách bao gồm dạng điền vào chỗ trống, viết lại câu đồng nghĩa, dịch câu và cuối cùng là tự viết một bài viết Task 1 hoàn chỉnh, sử dụng lại những từ đã học trong sample. Phần 3: bao gồm Suggested Answer (Đáp án gợi ý). Phần này giúp người học có thể tự sửa bài tập của mình thông qua phần đáp án gợi ý từ đội ngũ tác giả.

Giới thiệu ZIM ACADEMY

Students spend a lot of time and money on tertiary education, hoping to (1) acquire practical knowledge and skills that can help them (2) find gainful employment when they graduate However, (3) employment prospects are not promising and more graduates are struggling to find work, causing some people to (4) voice the opinion that only (5) vocational subjects like maths and science should be taught instead of philosophy, history, and other art-related subjects This

essay will discuss the merits of the arts field as the reasons why I disagree with this viewpoint.

Arts subjects such as history and philosophy are not just about theoretical knowledge that may never be applied in the

real world like some people have assumed The values of philosophy actually (6) manifest themselves in every aspect

of life, as studying the subject means we learn a valuable set of skills, including the ability to question ourselves, our surroundings, and understanding of this world With philosophy and history, we attain analysis and critical thinking skills, which are required in every kind of profession should we hope to perform well in our job

The sciences and business are undoubtedly important and any student with an aptitude or interest should (7) pursue a university degree in those fields Also, the fact that a significant number of professions are to some extent related to science, maths, or other vocational subjects may lead to people majoring in these fields to (8) maximize employability

after graduation This is certainly understandable as it can indeed lead to better career prospects, but going too far by suggesting that universities should drop arts subjects would be shortsighted The ability to think carefully and evaluate information students acquire in philosophy and history courses can assist them in solving math problems, doing

scientific research, creating initiatives, and avoiding prejudice should they choose to (9) specialize in those fields.

In conclusion, I (10) wholeheartedly disagree with the statement that universities should eliminate arts classes from

university curriculums Instead, students should be encouraged to take courses in philosophy, history, or other arts subjects even if they choose to major in the sciences so they can have training in logic and analytical thinking, which will

benefit them enormously as they (11) progress in their careers.

Rising university fees and scarce employment prospects for graduates have led some people to say that universities should not teach arts subjects, like philosophy and history, and only offer practical degree courses that maximize chances of employment

Thông thường chúng ta sử dụng từ “manifest" với ý nghĩa “thực hành ý nghĩ muốn gì có đó" hay “fake it till you make it", tức giả định như mình đã đạt được mục tiêu cho đến khi nó thực sự trở thành hiện thực Nhưng ít ai biết được rằng nghĩa cơ bản của “manifest” chỉ là biểu hiện, gần giống với từ “present” hay “show”, vì thế nó có thể được sử dụng để ám chỉ những kỹ năng, kiến thức, hoặc giá trị mà có mặt trong các phương diện của đời sống:

Cách sử dụng: Động từ “pursue” kết hợp với “university degree” ý chỉ nỗ lực của một người trong việc thi đỗ đại học, bắt

đầu một ngành học nào đó (nếu ở Việt Nam thường kéo dài trong 3 đến 4 năm) và tốt nghiệp ra trường

Ngày xưa việc được học đại học và tốt nghiệp không đơn giản và phổ biến như hiện nay, kể cả ở những nước phát triển như Mỹ, Anh, hay Úc, vì thế từ “pursue” mang hàm ý nỗ lực nhiều để đạt được mục tiêu:

Cách sử dụng: Cụm từ này cũng đặc biệt dùng để ám chỉ nỗ lực của ai đó trong việc tối ưu hoá cơ hội tìm kiếm việc làm,

có thể là thông qua việc nâng cao kỹ năng và kinh nghiệm hoặc mở rộng kiến thức về lĩnh vực liên qua.

Cách sử dụng: Động từ specialize chỉ lĩnh vực học thuật hoặc công việc mà ở đó một cá nhân có nhiều kiến thức, kinh

nghiệm, hay kỹ năng Họ cũng có thể đã theo đuổi lĩnh vực ấy một khoảng thời gian khá dài trước khi trở nên chuyên nghiệp :

Dịch nghĩa: hoàn toàn đồng tình

Cách sử dụng: Trong văn viết học thuật, hoặc có thể là khi đang tranh luận, nếu hoàn toàn đồng tình/không đồng tình

về chủ đề gì đó, ta có thể dùng cụm wholeheartedly agree/disagree (with + noun phrase) để thể hiện rõ quan điểm của mình, cũng như khi dùng agree hay disagree với các trạng từ completely/strongly.
