I Introduction

II The function of the goods inspection area

The goods inspection area of Cat Lai port is the place to control and check

whether the goods are eligible to be transported This area has the following main

functions:

• Inspecting the quality of the goods, strictly assessing the safety and validity of the goods

• Check documents related to goods such as invoices, papers,

• Handling of substandard goods: That is, goods that do not meet the

requirements for quality and safety will be handled according to the

requirements of the law

• Ensure safe and efficient transportation of goods

When checking goods, there will be three results green channel, yellow

channel, and red channel:

• Green channel refers to goods that are easy to transport, have no problems,

and do not have a great impact on the environment For goods that meet this channel, the goods will be cleared and shipped on time

• Yellow channel refers to quality goods, sensitive materials, or documents that have been modified multiple times If goods meet this channel, enterprises are required to submit documents to customs

• Red channel refers to goods that are toxic, flammable, explosive, dangerous,

or of unknown origin such as wood, drugs, chemicals, goods with alcohol content, etc If the goods have this color flow, the customs will strictly inspect the goods and their documents

• In addition, for special goods that cannot be seen with the eyes, the customs will use a scanner for inspection, which is the highest form of inspection

III What kind of warehouse is that ? Describe the process of receiving and loading goods into that warehouse by forklift

CFS WAREHOUSE:

• The CFS warehouse at Cat Lai port is a retail collection station, which has the function of receiving and storing temporary goods during the process of handling and transporting goods at the port

• The warehouses are often rented by logistics companies or importers and exporters to store goods while waiting for customs clearance or transportation

to their final destination

• The warehouse includes activities such as loading and unloading goods, inspecting and packing goods, picking up goods at the factory, packing outside the port, loading and unloading goods from containers, and packing goods into containers

• In addition, the warehouse is also equipped with modern equipment and machinery to ensure efficient and quick operations of import, export, and transportation of goods

The process of receiving and loading goods into the warehouse by the forklift is carried out as follows:

• Staff at Cat Lai port will determine the order to receive, quantity, and check the product information and shipping instructions of customers

• Before loading goods by forklift, staff will conduct a safety check of the forklift

to ensure that the forklift is still in normal operation and to ensure the safety of employees and goods

• Next, the staff will move the forklift to door 23 to receive and load the forklift

• Then, staff will use a forklift to bring the goods into the warehouse or a vehicle that will deliver the goods to the next destination

IV How many maritime routes can cargo ships

from Cat Lai take ?

Cat Lai port is currently the largest and most modern international container port in Vietnam in District 2 - Ho Chi Minh City Ho Chi Minh City is in the Top 25 leading ports in the world with the market share of import and export containers accounting for over 90% of the southern region and nearly 50% of the market share

of the country Therefore, Cat Lai Port operates continuously 24/7 hours a day, which can meet all the needs of customers due to delays in weighing stations and road interchanges Currently, to avoid long waits at ports, many businesses have chosen the solution of transshipment of goods between seaports or from factories too and from seaports by many different modes of transport and quite effectively This mode

of transportation is not only convenient for businesses in the Mekong Delta but also in the area between Cai Mep port and Cat Lai port Because of the current location and channel, Cat Lai port can only receive feeder ships - cargo consolidators (medium size

or less) with a size of fewer than 2,900 TEUs, specializing in transporting Asian routes

(Cambodia, Singapore, ), but because Cat Lai is not a deep-water port, the transshipment cost is higher As for goods exported and imported to other continental markets by large tonnage ships, they must be transshipped, at major ports in the world near Vietnam such as ports in China, Thailand, and Japan, But since 2007, Vietnam has built the first deep-water port, Cai Mep - Thi Vai port in Vung Tau, located about

80 km south of Ho Chi Minh City, with a depth of minus 14 meters; the harbor area is minus 16.8 meters It will be a place to handle, and transport goods for Dong Nai and Binh Duong, provide services as well as be able to receive ships with a capacity of 18,000 TEUs, can go on long-distance trips across the ocean - mother vessel to routes

to the US, EU because of its deep-water capabilities

It handles a large amount of container traffic and serves as a trade gateway between Vietnam and other countries With a convenient location, connecting with many other ports to form the Southern container port system, convenient by road for the forwarding of import and export goods of enterprises operating in industrial parks in Ho Chi Minh City and neighboring provinces Combined with Cai Mep ports, Hiep Phuoc forms the Saigon Port system, acting as the gateway

of the whole South (including the Southeast and Mekong Delta provinces) All domestically produced goods, agricultural products, garments are exported to countries from here Most of the products from here are exported abroad through Cat Lai port

Some of the maritime routes that cargo ships from Cat Lai can travel include:

pass through the Suez Canal and navigable waterways, then sail toward European ports such as Rotterdam, Hamburg, and Felixstowe This route can take between 25

to 35 days and is used for the transport of a wide range of goods including textiles, footwear, electronics, and machinery

along the Pacific Ocean, enter the Panama Canal, then sail to ports in the US and Canada, including Long Beach, Los Angeles, Vancouver, and Seattle This service takes around 18 to 22 days and is ideal for the transportation of goods such as clothing, footwear, furniture, rubber products, and industrial machinery

container through the Panama Canal, navigating the South Pacific, and stopping by ports in South America Important ports include Santos, Rio De Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Valparaiso, Guayaquil, and Callao This shipping service may take a few days longer and is particularly suitable for exports of agricultural products and timber

including ports in Japan, South Korea, China, Taiwan, and Singapore These routes may take between 1 to 2 weeks and are used for a variety of cargo including electronics, textile, chemical, and manufacturing raw materials

In summary, Cat Lai port is an important hub for cargo transportation in Southeast Asia Its location provides a strategic location for both import and export operations, and the selection of maritime routes provides great flexibility for global supply chain management

V Which type of ship that Cat Lai port approves berthing ? Why does Cat Lai not allow ships with

a larger capacity to dock and maximize their cargo handling capacity?

The port is designed to serve a variety of ships such as container ships, oil tankers, market ships, fishing boats, and cruise ships, depending on the portability and weather conditions, Cat Lai can anchor all kinds of ships ships with a tonnage of 500 DWT - 200,000 DWT, in addition, large ships such as super-long, super-weight ships, overloaded cargo ships, or ships with technical conditions that do not meet the needs

Cat Lai Port is currently the main port of Ho Chi Minh City and is one of the largest ports in Vietnam However, the limitation of the tonnage of ships entering Cat Lai port is due to several reasons:

depth of the riverbed right where ships pass in the middle of the river is -8.6 meters excluding tides, and the depth is the water level in front of the wharf where the ships are parked and exploited is -12 meters, this depth is an artificial depth that must be dredged to exploit this will take time and cost more, the port can only accept ships payload 2900 TEUs or less

receive large ships, the distance from the port to the estuary is quite far This results

in large vessels having to wait to enter the port, causing congestion and impeding commercial activity

capacity at Cat Lai port is based on the port's existing capabilities and technology And the use of vessels with larger tonnage does not necessarily guarantee this optimization Even picking up ships with a larger tonnage leads to an increase in loading and unloading time and costs of loading and unloading goods, and at the same time makes it difficult to manage traffic and protect the environment

Cat Lai has limited unloading capacity, which is limited to a maximum of 81 ships per week

Therefore, limiting the tonnage of ships entering Cat Lai is not because the port

is not able and does not want to maximize the cargo handling capacity, but rather to ensure safe and efficient operation at the same time improved connectivity with other areas of the sea
