1 OPENING 1.1 The reasons for choosing the topic The modern world is growing rapidly with the explosion of science and information technology To catch up with that development, as well as integrate with the trend of globalization, Viet Nam has been taking knowledge economy as a foundation for the development in which education - training and science and technology are defined as the top national policies However, language disagreement is a barrier to cooperating and acquiring technical and cultural advances between countries and nations In this context, English is considered a language that is an international language, which is the key to opening the endless knowledge treasure of mankind Therefore, the Ministry of Education and Training has set English into Vietnam's education program right from the elementary level, to provide students with initial knowledge platforms on using of foreign languages However, learning English in the mountainous area as primary schools in Ngoc Lac district in general and My Tan Primary School in particular are also faced many difficulties It is easy to see that English is an independent subject, introduced into mass school lately, starting from grade 3, and is very new to students and their parents in moutainous areas Nearly 100% students at school are in ethnic minority (Muong ethnicity), with poor economical condition, haaving psychology “afraid to say”, timid, lack of confident when communicating, especially the students in grade who are just getting used to English for the first time The time of learning in the class is too short (2 periods/week) there are not many communication environments in English along with a lot of knowledge that makes students feel difficult to learn, being stressed and feel afraid, and no longer exciting about the subject leads to high-quality learning Besides during the last years of study, the heavily influenced Covid-19 pandemic caused the school to interrupt the organization of teaching, even having to leave school for several days In this situation, as an English teacher, I am very concerned about researching, exploring, referring to the same opinion of colleagues to find the measures how to make students more interested in the subject, createa comfortable atmosphere for English communicational practice, experience, contributing to improve the quality of teaching After a period of practical testing at the school in the first year, we have achieved certain efficiency I happyly share my initiative “Some solutions to improve the quality of teaching and learning English in grade at My Tan Primary School” 1.2 Research purposes Through this topic, I want to contribute a small part in innovating teaching methods towards promoting the positive, initiative of students, creating a practical environment in teaching and learning English for students to improve the quality of teaching and learning English for students in grade as well as in the whole school 1.3 Research subjects English teaching activities in which the focus are extracurricular activities and the English Club at My Tan Primary School The 3rd grade students at My Tan Primary School in the period 2020 - 2022 1.4 Research methods - Documentary research; - Investigation, survey, collection, and statistics; - Scientific observation method; trials and experiments; - Analysis and synthesis method THE CONTENT OF EXPERIENCED INITIATIVE 2.1 Theoretical basis of experience initiative Education Law - 2019 Number: 43/2019 / QH14 in Article has regulated “The educational objectives to develop comprehensively Vietnamese people with ethics, knowledge, culture, health, aesthetics, and careers ; have the quality, capacity and sense of citizenship; have patriotism, national spirit, loyalty to the ideal of national independence and socialism; promote the potentials and creative ability of each individual; Improve people's knowledge, develop human resources, foster talents, meet the requirements of the cause of national construction and defense and international integration”; In Clause - Article of the 2019 Education Law also identifies: “Educational methods must be scientific, promote students’ positivity, self-discipline, initiative, creative thinking; Fostering to learners of self-study and cooperation ability, practical ability, learning passion and will rise” Current general education program issued together with Decision No 3 16/2006 / QD-BDGĐT dated 05/05/2006 of the Minister of Education and Training also stated “Have to promote the students’ positivity, suitable to the characteristics of the subject, the characteristics of the students, the conditions of each class, fostering students the method of self-study, the ability to cooperate, practice skills to apply knowledge in practice, affect emotions, bring joy, excitement and responsibility for learning to students” Teaching and learning primary English subjects, in particular, need creative boldness, and innovative teaching methods, not only teach-learning merely in classes, in textbooks The teacher needs to create a new space, a new atmosphere so that they have a comfortable feeling, escape the learning pressure as participating in the themed playground, the owner, club, extracurricular activities, etc To help them relieve pressures after stressful lessons, training knowledge, developing life skills, and creating a favorite interest in this subject, contribute to improving the effectiveness of teaching and learning English in primary schools 2.2 Current initiative condition before applying experienced 2.2.1 Some characteristics about the locality and the school My Tan is a commune located in the Northeast of Ngoc Lac district, it is about 10 km from the district center by road and has a geographical position: - The East of the commune of Ngoc Lac town, Ngoc Lac district - The West borders Giao An commune, Lang Chanh district - The South borders Cao Ngoc commune, Ngoc Lac district - The North borders Dong Luong commune, Lang Chanh district The commune has a total natural area of 2,494,04 ha, with 1250 households, and 5650 ports, with two ethnic groups, accounting for the majority of Muong 98.0%, the other is some other ethnic groups The commune has 01 administrative unit, with 08 villages; There are 03 schools, 01 medical station, and 01 forest ranger station located in the area My Tan Primary School was established under Decision No 2719 dated July 3, 2018, of Ngoc Lac District People’s Committee, based on merging My Tan I Primary School and My Tan II Primary School Currently, My Tan Primary School has 02 subdivisions, the central school site is located in Mong village, other is in Thi Moc village; The whole school has 28 teachers and 522 students 2.2.2 Advantages Leadership levels and education rooms are always interested in, guiding and directing closely and helping promptly with school language teaching Organizing clustered activities for English teachers bring great effects on teaching The school leaders are interested in, helping to create all the most favorable conditions for the work of opening extracurricular activities and English clubs The school is relatively full of equipment, teaching supplies such as tape, disc, projector, story, pictures, school supplies, serving teaching and learning More and more parents are interested in helping and coordinating relatively well with teachers in their child's teaching and learning English work Many students study hard, especially love English 2.2.3 Disadvantages The learning duration is too short because the school does not have enough staff of two English teachers to ensure teaching periods/week (current students only learn periods per week), while most lessons have new knowledge, students not have much time to learn deep knowledge, skills, and practice training in class The school does not have a classroom dedicated to English, audio-visual equipments are limited, There are not fully equipped with vivid and attractive visual teaching aids, so it has not created a lot of interest in English for students Due to the characteristics of mountainous areas, the English environment is limited to students’ experience and use of knowledge in practice Most students’ parents not know English so it is difficult to check and guide their children to study at home At the beginning of the new school year 2021 - 2022, after receiving the class and after the first few lessons, I gave students in the grade of the whole school to the survey test at the beginning of the year before applying measures to implement new activities enter teaching The following results: No Cla ss Total Completed well Complete Uncomplet d ed 3A 27 11 13 3B 24 13 3 3C 38 14 20 4 3D 35 13 18 * Data analysis The survey results show the quality of students in grade is very limited, the number of students who fulfilled well accounted for a little bit, and many children have only reached the completion level, even more, and still have not been completed Thus, if there are no positive and timely impacts to change the situation above, students will not be able to complete the program as the quality target set So I studied practicality, consulted friends, colleagues, books, internet networks, etc to find several measures below to overcome restrictions and step by step improve teaching and learning quality English of grade at My Tan Primary School 2.3 The solution applied to solve the real problem Before the above conditions, at the same time see the role, the mission of a teacher was standing on the podium I tried to explore, research and study, thereby offering several solutions to improve the quality of teaching and learning English in grade through English club activities and extracurricular activities at My Tan Primary School 2.3.1 Organizing English Clubs Starting from the school year 2020 - 2021, I advised the school leader to build English Clubs for students in grade at both school sites with the aim: of creating more time for studentsto review, strengthen and practice applying learning knowledge, helping students to develop English communication skills as well as primary school life skills Taking part in the club helps students discover more about the world around them, love life, love family, friends, teachers, etc ,helps them have the opportunity to exchange, and make friends with friends new By the school year 2021 - 2022, despite complicated epidemics, the activity of the English Club is still well maintained After years of studying English club activities, I draw the organization's experience as follows: The first: Propaganda work: Because the English Club was held for the first time at the school, was not avoided in the awareness of many parents of the students, besides the excitement of many parents still did not doubt the performance of the club, so the first thing which I work is to advise the school leadership in the staff of the parents through the meetings, reporting to Ngoc Lac Education and Training Department, reporting to the commune authorities to take advantage of receiving their support management levels and support of students’ parents Image propaganda about the English Club at a parent meeting school year 2020 - 2021 - Source by Bui Thi Thuy Besides, in the lessons and in the overtime activities in class, I enlist the propaganda for students about the meaning and performance of English club activities through images and videos on the Internet, especially through YouTube channels There by many students have begun curious and boldly participate in the club In the first year of implementation, we had established the club: “I love English” for students in grade 7 Video illustration Introduction Activities of some domestic English clubs I have introduced students – Source by Bui Thi Thuy The content of the English Club is carried out consistently such as the I love Maths and Vietnamese Club of the school for years, under the direction of Ngoc Lac Department of Education and Training The second: Building the active content Each monthly club will live times/week according to topics, based on knowledge in the textbook program they learn Those contents need to provide a rich amount of knowledge that is suitable for students The subject topics can be effectively and appropriately interwoven Topics and methods of living are diverse in activities such as My Family, Let's sing together, etc The club is operated in the form of teamwork or group work, so participating students will be devided in to groups and assigned a host, along with other activities such as active games, English singing contest, masquerade party, exchanging questions, etc Besides, the club also invited representatives of friends’ schools like Ngoc Khe I Primary School, Ngoc Son Primary School, Ngoc Lac Town Primary School, etc , to attend several activities to learn and exchange mutual operational experiences 8 Ms Mai Le (English teacher at Ngoc Son Primary School) and representative of Ngoc Son Primary School came to interact with the English Club of My Tan Primary School - Source by Bui Thi Thuy For example, the following: the first month, students study by topic: “MySelf” In which they will be reviewed, strengthening knowledge, practicing training ways to greet and introduce ourselves from the name, how to spell names, age, health itself We can also divide them to study groups, organize contests between groups such as presentations about themselves, English singing, playing English games, etc , with small gifts with dynamic meaning tablets, encouraging children to study The next month guides other theme activities such as “School Objects”, “Color”, and “Family Members” The most obvious thing after club activities is being excited, more excited about learning, and deepening the knowledge learned 2.3.2 Organizing periodic between school sites English Club Exchanges Due to the characteristics of My Tan Primary School, there are school sites more than 4km away from each other so the English Club is held into individual clubs at school sites to ensure safety and convenience for students On the other hand, it is a favorable condition to organize periodic exchanges between two clubs with healthy competitiveness and no less exciting In November 2020, after many times, thought, and anxiety, with the support of school leaders, encouragement, and help of my colleagues I boldly organized the first English Club Exchange in the history of school education and was also the first time of the whole district in surprise, curiosity of a large parent and in the eagerness of the student 9 Photos of students in My Tan Primary School were joining the English Club Exchange - Source by Bui Thi Thuy The main content in the club exchange includes: Welcome culture (Art performances are performed in English) including singing and dancing The opening part, introducing the content of the exchange session (implemented in Bilingual English - Vietnamese) was hosted by me and the principal of the school Personal exchanges in the form of a gold bell with 15 questions divided into parts: Get started - Speed up - Finish Students answer questions by choosing the answer and writing on the handheld tablet I choose this form so that students from being surprised because they are interested in the exchanges of the Maths and Vietnamese clubs; Alternating between each section is the content of exchanging with participants, mainly questions and answers - introducing themselves The ending part is giving gifts to the winning students who answered correctly to the end of question 15 The most surprising thing to me, the other teachers and the parents is that there were 10 students ring the golden bell This result along with the contents of introducing themselves to be carried out by students who have brought unexpected joys to many parents A special thing in this exchange is the presence and encouragement of the representatives of the People's Committee of My Tan Commune, representatives of the Study Promotion Association and representatives of the Commune Youth Union Local leaders have praised and motivated me, helping me to have more confidence to perform the next exchanges 2.3.3 Collaborate with studens’ parents to improve the quality of student learning 10 As described in the assessment of the current situation, the quality of language learning of the mountainous schools in general and of My Tan primary school in particular is faced with many difficulties due to “ regional” factors: it is too little time to stusdy in class; Ethnic students are often timid and afraid to communicate; the environment for students to communicate in English naturally is not favorable To overcome this limitation, I proactively proposed that school leaders contact and guide students’parents to cooperate in helping students to learn at home, contributing to improve learning quality, specifically as follows: 2.3.3.1 “ Immersion English language” every day I explained to students’ parents that English is also a language like all other languages, Muong ethnic students can speak mandarin because they hear, speak, and learn mandarin every day, so for students to learn English well, they need to practice listening - speaking and studying every day The materials for developing listening and speaking skills are available on You tube and on the Internet in general, with just a few simple steps, parents can help their children to practice listening - repeating the content of the lessons learned in class and will learn through Smart phones, TV, In addition, artificial intelligence applications also help parents and students access additional to access additional and extended data very easily After the implementation, I found that students’ parents were very surprised because they don’t know English, but they can easily help their children to practice English listening and speaking skills every day and without a lot of money Currently, there are 55 students’ parents of 3rd grade students who regularly support their children with this form 2.3.3.2 Suppporting and improving the quality of learning through popular English learning Apps For students’ parents with suitable economic conditions, I guide them to register and buy Apps, register for English learning support software such as Monkey Junior, Alo Kiddy, English 123,… even there was one parent who let their child learn Ekids Pro 11 I guide students and their parents to apply information technology to study at home – Source by Bui Thi Thuy After the implementation, I received positive feedback from many parents: stdents were more enthusiastic about learning, improved listening and speaking skills andreflexes Currently, there are 28 families supporting students with this content 2.3.4 Organizing English extracurricular activities Through the time I realized that extracurricular activities in the school not only worked to help students work playful and healthy but also create a friendly learning environment between students with students, between this class with the other class, between students with teachers So I boldly organized extracurricular activities for English for children to have the opportunity to learn from each other, creating a positive and natural English use environment I organized extracurricular activities with the following specific forms: a Organizing students to play games Game 1: Touching the objects -
