I Objectives

1 Knowledge: Before the lesson, Ss able to consolidate the sound of the letters Vv, Ww, Xx, Yy and Zz and the corresponding words Learn and practice reading skill

2 Skills: listening, speaking

3 Attitude: Ss like studying English II Teaching aids:

T: Pictures, books, flash card SS: Ss’ book, activity book

III Method: MAT, TPA. IV/ Procedure:

1 Organization: (1’) - Greeting

- Check absent students

2 Warm up (2’)

- Has ss sing a song in unit 13 3 New lesson

Teacher and Ss’ activities Contents

1 Activity 1(Track 53) (10 mins)

- (book closed) Tell the students that it’s story time - Ask them if they remember the previous story If

not, the teacher can spend some time going through it

- Prepare phonics cards of these word: watch, yo-yo, box, van, zebra

- Ask the students to read out the words

- Invite students to guess what they think the story is about

- Ask the students to look at the book

- Ask them questions about what they can see in the pictures

e.g Teacher: (pointing to the ox in picture 1) Look! What’s this?

Class: (It’s an) ox!

Teacher: (pointing to the watch in picture 1) Yes! The ox has a ….

Class: watch! etc

-Play the CD and ask the students to listen and follow the story in their books, pointing to the pictures of the key words

-Play the CD again pausing for the students to repeat (chorally and/ or individually)

-Finally, ask individual students to read the story aloud

Extension (optinal)

Say incomplete sentences from the story and ask individual students complete them

e.g Teacher: Where is the yo-yo?

Student 1: The yo-yo is in the box etc 2 Activity 2(8 mins)

- Point and elicit the items

- Ask the students to choose the correct item and draw it in the box

- Explain to them that they can use any colour they like to colour the item.`

Activity 1: Act Out (6 mins)

- Read the sentences in the story, pause at the key words and invite the students to mime them (the watch, the yo-yo, the box, the van, the zebra) - Have the students come to the front of the

classroom and act out the story

- Encourage them to have fun as they perform Activity 2: Optional Story Time Activities (6 mins)

- Ask the students to work in pairs

- Ask them to change parts or all the story, use their picture cards

- Invite some pairs to present their own stories

- Call Ss to retell what they’ve learn - Practice at home

Activity: Stand and Sit

- Tell the students to listen for words that begin with e.g the /j/ sound

- Ask the students to stand up when they hear words beginning with /j/ sound and sit when they hear words begin with other sound

- The students say the names of the items and their beginning sounds

- Ask them to colour the corresponding letter

- Go around the classroom to provide any necessary help

- Choose individual students to say the letters and the sounds aloud

- Ask the students to tick the letters that correspond to the pictures

- Go around the classroom to provide any necessary help, ask individual students to say out the sounds or the items

- Ask the class to say out the name of each item and the correct letter of each one

Activity 3(5 mins) - Explain the activity

- Ask the students to say the words for each picture - Then ask them to circle the ones that begin with the

same sound

- Go around the classroom to provide any necessary help

Activity (Track 87) (5 mins) - Explain the activity

- Elicit the names of the items - Play the CD

- The students listen and circle the correct picture - Listen again, pause and ask the students to repeat the

item they hear

Activity: Run and Touch (7 mins)

- Divide the class into two teams, A and B, make lines - Put up the phonics cards (from part 4) on the board - Say the word Two students, one from each team, race

to touch the cards

1.What is the beginning sound? Colour Say the letter and the sound.

2.Look and tick ()

3.Say the word Circle the ones that begin with the same sound

4.Listen and circle

- The first student to touch the card wins a point for his/her team

- The team with more points wins the game

Teacher can make paper planes/ paper balls for the students to throw at the cards

4 Consolidation: (2’)

- Call Ss to retell what they’ve learn - Practice at home
