It creates fun- learning environment, so it reduces learning anxiety - It is the learner-centered teaching methodology - It increases learning motivation, so it integrates various linguistic skills - It enhances collaboration and communication among learners - It creates a meaningful context for language use - It provides immediate feedback; and through it, student's knowledge is tested unofficially The process of game team activities Step 1: - To get experience from the game - Evaluate strengths and weaknesses of the game as well as the rules of the game Some kinds of language games used in language teaching 3.1 Games for reviewing/ teaching vocabulary a Bingo: The teacher asks students to prepare a piece of drafting paper and lets them write down five of a list of new words After that, the teacher reads aloud these words in random While listening to teacher, students circle the words that are in their paper Anyone that has five first words says "binggo", and he/she is the winner +Example: miraculous capable of accuracy magical lightening speed interact data speed up printerAnh 10 - Page 54) (Unit - calculate Technology keyboard and You system (Reading) - Tieng b Brainstorming/ Networks: Teacher divides class into two teams and asks each team to complete the networks in time limited The team which has more correct answer is the winner For example: Use networks to conduct a warmer activity for Reading lesson - Unit 10 (Tieng Anh 10) - Put the suitable words into the empty boxes Forest fire Environmental problems Suggestion: pollution, floods, the extinction of plants and animals, deforestation … c Guessing game: Teacher gives students definitions and asks students to find out what the word is For example: Use guessing game to conduct a warmer activity for Speaking lesson - Unit (Tieng Anh 10) What is it? - Teacher divides class into four groups Each group chooses a number, and teacher reads a question matching with the number Students in this group listen and predict The key word is found out after all of the four questions are answered Suggestion It was invented in 1925 (Television) We can listen to the news but we can’t see it (Radio) It contains information and pictures (Newspapers) We use it to find information quickly, chat with friends and send email (The Internet)  KEY WORD: THE MASS MEDIA d Jumbled words Teacher divides class into two groups, and gives each group a handout with words in a confusing order Teacher lets students rearrange the words to have meaningful words in time limited The winner team is the one which has more correct words finishes their task much more quickly Example 1: Use this technique to conduct a warmer activity for Reading lesson - Unit (Tieng Anh 10) NETINTER INTERNET 3 ODIRA  RADIO LETESIONVI TELEVISION KOBO  BOOK PAPRENEWSNEWSPAPER GAMANEZI MAGAZINE To lead into the new lesson, teacher asks students the question “What we call these words in general?” Example 2: Warm up activity – Language focus (Pronunciation / fʌ/ and /ɑ: / - Unit 2: School talk – Tieng Anh 10) JECTSBU  SUBJECT SKAT TASK LMEEAF FEMALE FICFTRA TRAFFIC e Categorising: - This game is used in most of the stages of the lesson - The teacher lets students work in groups - The teacher provides students with ten or fifteen words, sentences or pictures… and then asks them to put them into suitable headings Example: Warm – up activity- Reading- Unit 1: A day in the life of … Put the sentences under the appropriate heading He is a farmer He is a teacher He is a cyclo driver He gets up very early He works in the streets He lives in the country He works with children He gets people from one place to another He corrects homework He works in the school He meets a lot of people He works on the farm There are also a variety of games used to creat warmer activities which can help teachers build their lessons more interestingly and stimulatingly - Chain game - Noughts and crosses - Kim’s game - Rub out and remember - Slap the board - Hidden words - Cross words - Riddles 3.2 Games for curricular activities Game 1: Word Grab with Songs The purpose of the game is to make the class more exciting and to practise students’ listening skill Choose a song that fewer students have heard Then, select some phrases (phrases / chunks) in the song and write them on the board Divide the class into teams The teacher plays the song once or twice, and then two teams go to the board to circle the phrases appearing in the song (To make the game more difficult, teacher should write down some phrases that are not in the song) The winning team is the one that can get much more correct phrases Game 2: “START WITH THE TAGS " * Purposes: train for quickness and develop the ability to remember vocabulary * Location: In the classroom or the hall * Time: 7-10 minutes * How to play: - Divide the class into or teams (Group 1, ) - The teacher writes the first verb, and then the member in group must write another verb beginning from the last letter of the previous one The next verb of group must be started with the last letter of the word given Just like that, each group takes turn to write - The game will be finished until no-one in each group figures out the next word, provide incorrect words, or carry out their task too slowly For example: The teacher reads aloud “Go” and writes it on the board Group will continue to write “open” Group must write the verb beginning with “n”, so the correct answer may be “need” It is the turn of the first group to write the next word starting with the letter “d” * Note: - The verb must always be the infinitive form, the past or past participle form will not be accepted - The verb chosen to write must be meaningful and not be repeated as well as erased many times - Remind contestants keep calm and confident Game 3: Sentence Race Level: Any Level A good game for large classes and for reviewing vocabulary lessons Prepare a list of review vocabulary words Write each word on two small pieces of paper That means writing the word twice, once on each paper Organize the pieces like bundles, bundles, sets of identical words Divide the class into teams Get them to make creative team names Distribute each list of words to both teams Every student on each team should have a paper Both teams have the same words When you call a word, students should stand up, one from each team The students must then run to the blackboard and race to write a sentence using their word The winner is the one with a correct and clearly written sentence This is always a hit with kids For more advanced students, use tougher words Game 4: Beep Game Level: Easy to Medium Choose around 10 volunteers to come and stand in a line at the front of the classroom The first student in line must begin counting from 1, and each student in turn calls out the next number However, every 4th number must be replaced by the word "beep" (or buzz etc.) Following a "beep" the next student in line must call out the next number, and not the number that has been replaced For example, 1, 2, 3, beep, 5, 6, 7, beep, etc If a student hesitates too much or makes a mistake he/she must sit down, so eventually only one student remains Whenever a student sits down, begin from again See how far you can get! Game 5: Circle game This game is great for listening Arrange chairs in the classroom so that everyone is sitting in a circle Give instructions like:  Everyone who has a sister change seats If you live in a flat or house with an even number change seats  If you are wearing brown shoes change seats  Everyone with blue eyes change seats  Again instructions can be graded so that even students with little English can play – using colours, clothes, family etc Those who fit the description must stand and change seats, the others remain seated After a few turns, remove a chair at each instruction, so that one person does not manage to get a seat and they are out – they could then give the next instruction The last student remaining is the winner Be careful with boisterous classes – there may be some overenthusiastic pushing Game 6: What's the Number? Participants use the four basic operations (addition, subtraction, division and multiplication) to compute a simple mathematical equation provided orally by the instructor They call out the correct answer as soon as possible This game addresses students' listening skills and tests their understanding of numbers, which is often an important part of language teaching materials III> Conclusion: Using language games is considered as a powerful language learning tool because it helps the teacher build meaningful contexts in which students easily practise the target language Moreover, it helps to create an interesting learning environment in which students never feel bored with learning In fact, according to Uberman (1998, 87) writes, "Games encourage, entertain, teach, and promote fluency and communicative skills Thanks to this, I am absolutely sure that the quality of learning and teaching is improved day by day At the end of the topic, I’d love to say “Sorry” for my possible mistakes in spelling/in grammar/in using the wrong word/… References   The effectiveness of learning vocabulary through games Asian EFL Journal http://www.asian-efl-journal.com/dec_03_sub.Vn.html (accessed September 25, 2004) Saricoban, A and Metin, E 2000 Songs, verse and games for teaching grammar The Internet TESL Journal (10) http://iteslj.org/Techniques/Saricoban-Songs.html (accessed September 27, 2004)  Uberman, A 1998 The use of games: for vocabulary presentation and revision English Teaching Forum 36 (1): 20 http://exchanges.state.gov/forum/vols/vol36/no1/p20.htm (accessed September 27, 2004)  David Seymour & Maria Popova “700 classroom activities” – Macmillan ... +Example: miraculous capable of accuracy magical lightening speed interact data speed up printerAnh 10 - Page 54) (Unit - calculate Technology keyboard and You system (Reading) - Tieng b Brainstorming/... winner For example: Use networks to conduct a warmer activity for Reading lesson - Unit 10 (Tieng Anh 10) - Put the suitable words into the empty boxes Forest fire Environmental problems Suggestion:... is For example: Use guessing game to conduct a warmer activity for Speaking lesson - Unit (Tieng Anh 10) What is it? - Teacher divides class into four groups Each group chooses a number, and teacher
