TRANSLATION PROJECT

Rationale

With the aim of completing the Internship report, I have done some research on many articles on different topics Then I opted for two online articles, both of which are in the field of Economics Both selected texts contain the required total word count of at least 1500 words To be specific, the English article is about the massive lay-offs in many big companies around the world, and the Vietnamese one is about China’s opening-up policy The reasons why I chose such topics in the field of Economics for my Translation Project are as follows:

Firstly, the English article I chose is about the lay-off wave happening in various companies worldwide because it has undoubtedly become a burning issue since 2021, which has not only been one of the most discussed topics on social media, but also generated social panic, and drawn significant attention from people all over the world Due to the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, global economic growth has strikingly slowed down, hence, a wave of businesses have had to cut off a great number of employees to reduce costs and reestablish their structures More importantly, since I am a final-year student, who will officially enter the labor market soon, it is my topic of interest, which I spend time reading about daily Consequently, I hold the belief that I can do the translation well, and working on this text can also help me update the knowledge necessary for my future jobs.

Secondly, I selected the topic of China’s opening-up policy for my Vietnamese text to translate into English because this theme has received extensive media coverage recently After three years of closure due to the pandemic, China officially reopened its borders at the beginning of 2023, which obviously brings about tremendous benefits to people and countries around the world in terms of economics, tourism, and culture, including Vietnam Therefore, translating this article into Vietnamese can help me enrich my knowledge, obtain a lot of lessons, and build up my experience in translating documents on such topics.

Thirdly, in terms of vocabulary, the chosen texts have a multitude of advanced new words relating to the field of economics, so I could expand my vocabulary knowledge, which greatly helps me do better on translation Additionally, there are quite a lot of complex sentences with complicated grammatical structures that helped me improve my grammar and analytical skills while translating.

INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCES

Introduction

Before my university graduation, I worked as a translation intern at the Faculty of English, Hanoi Open University, where I received a myriad of opportunities, encouragement, and favorable conditions.

My internship began on January 2 , 2023, under the enthusiastic guidance of nd my internship supervisor, Mr Nguyen The Hoa At the beginning of the internship,

I contacted my supervisor to get specific instructions and took notes on what needed to be done and what needed to be prioritized or focused on The task was to translate two texts from the source language to the target language, one from English and another from Vietnamese The topics of the chosen texts must be among the fields offered by the faculty, including Education, Culture-Sport, Economics, Politics, Environment, Tourism, Health, and Technology Hence, after researching such topics, I selected appropriate articles in the field of Economics for my translation project and then translated them from the source language into the target language. Finally, before ending my 8 weeks of internship, I wrote a report about my internship experiences.

From my perspective, the eight-week internship, which is a compulsory part of the university’s curriculum, is such an invaluable opportunity for final-year students to apply what they learned at university in real work and consolidate their skills needed for future jobs Especially, writing the internship experiences helps me review the overall experience of the internship period and have a quick look at what

I have done, what skills I have improved, what problems I encountered, and what lessons I have learned Though I encountered a variety of obstacles during my internship, I worked hard and completed it successfully thanks to my supervisor’s dedicated support.

Practical experiences

My specific schedule for eight weeks of the internship is as follows:

In the first week, I contacted my internship supervisor and joined a private group to get further guidance and instructions I spent time reading and analyzing meticulously all the provided files and documents related to the internship to thoroughly comprehend my assignment and have a clear orientation for my internship report After that, I set specific plans for different tasks during the internship, prioritizing the more important ones to ensure I could complete my internship report on time.

In the second week, I conducted research on different topics by reading many well-known domestic and international newspapers, namely The Economist, BBC News, The Guardian, Vietnamnews, Dantri, and the list goes on After a lot of consideration and general analysis, I finally chose the field of economics for both of my translations.

In the third week, I selected the Vietnamese article for my translation and sent it to my supervisor to check if it was appropriate or not Then, I took the following steps to translate the article from Vietnamese to English: Skimming the entire text to get the main ideas and to determine the style of it for proper translation; identifying words or structures difficult to translate and looking them up in the dictionary and on the Internet; translating the text into English; spending time re-reading the text, correcting the mistakes, and editing the text to suit the English style I also read many English articles and watched English videos about this topic to expand my vocabulary and get specialized terms and expressions for my translation While translating, I wrote down what I found difficult and how I dealt with it Besides, during this week, I started writing the Internship Diary.

In the fourth week, after taking time to search documents on the Internet, I selected an excerpt from an English article to translate into Vietnamese and sent the article to my supervisor to ask for his opinions on it Then, I completed the Rationale of the report To fully grasp the main contents of the text for a better translation, I spent time analyzing it first and then made a rough translation. Afterward, I looked up new words in the dictionary and re-translated the text without forgetting to pay close attention to word usage and grammar structures. During the translation, I carefully took note of the difficulties that I encountered and the ways I resolved them Finally, after completing the translation, I reviewed it to find and correct the spelling and grammar mistakes, and did not forget to add new activities to the Internship Diary

In the fifth week, I double-checked both of my translations, making any changes to the translated texts if necessary.

In the sixth week, I re-read the instructions and requirements for writing a report about internship experiences and then started writing it To do this, I reviewed the overall experience of the internship period and divided it into 5 parts: What I have done; New skills acquired and skills improved; Classroom skills employed; Problems encountered; Lessons learned I checked the whole internship experience report to avoid spelling and grammar mistakes Moreover, I continued writing the Internship Diary.

In the seventh week, I focused on completing the internship report, including the Internship Diary, Translation Project, and Internship Experiences Since I did write the internship diary for each week during the internship period, it did not take long to complete the Internship Diary A crucial step is to check the entire report after completion, especially my personal information, to make sure there were no more mistakes.

In the eighth week, I sent the internship report to my supervisor to receive feedback and comments, and then edited it based on his suggestions Finally, I prepared a hard copy of the Internship Report to submit to the Faculty of English, Hanoi Open University on time.

3.2.2 New skills acquired and skills improved

Throughout the internship period, I realized that I became a better translator as

I had a precious opportunity to sharpen my knowledge and skills and earn some new skills necessary for my future jobs.

The first skill that I have made significant progress in after my internship period is translation skill I got rid of the usage of word-for-word translation and applied flexibly other types of translation instead, such as faithful translation, semantic translation, idiomatic translation, communicative translation, and free translation Thanks to this experience, I found it easier to reproduce the meaning of the original text in the target language by using the most accurate and effective expressions Additionally, during the translation, I paid more attention to the culture and the style of the target language, which helped me produce more natural and better translations.

The second skill that I have also greatly improved is my reading comprehension skill Reading comprehension is one of the most important strategies in translation to make sure that the translated documents are accurate, smooth, natural, and meaningful During my internship period, before starting the translation, I took time to skim the entire texts to grasp their main contents and thoroughly understand the messages hidden in them, so that I could convey them in the target language to the fullest.

Moreover, I have developed my computer skills a lot While working on my laptop to complete the internship report, I could practice typing accurately at a fast speed, which is one of the most vital skills for translators and interpreters Besides that, I learned many more Microsoft Office tips and tricks that helped me work more efficiently.

In addition to the skills I improved, I also attained several new skills First, it is time management skill, which plays a pivotal role in the success of doing anything. During the internship period, I learned how to organize my time wisely to complete the tasks of each week as planned, especially by prioritizing more important tasks to be done first In this way, I could successfully finish my internship report on time without any rush while still having time for my family, entertainment, and leisure activities Controlling my time also helped me increase my level of focus while doing the tasks and stay away from procrastination Consequently, I could maintain a work-study-life balance.

What is more, I acquired many other soft skills important for my career, such as communication skills and problem-solving skills Regarding communication skills, during the internship time, apart from working with my supervisor to get instructions, advice, and suggestions, I talked and discussed with my friends a lot about the internship report This experience equipped me with the ability to communicate with people of different ages, positions, and personalities in a flexible and skillful way Aside from that, I learned how to deal with arisen problems without becoming discouraged, and after 8 weeks of the internship, I became much calmer and more agile when finding solutions to the challenges that came up.

During my four years at the Faculty of English, Hanoi Open University, I have gained a wealth of valuable knowledge and skills necessary for my internship and future profession.

First, Listening, Speaking, Writing, and Reading are four skills that I learned at university Such skills play a pivotal role in language learning and will be very beneficial to me in my future jobs In the translation and interpretation industry, it is crucial for any translator or interpreter to be proficient in those four skills To be specific, with reading comprehension skills, I can quickly summarize documents, even very long and complicated ones, grasp their main contents as well as the messages that the texts want to covey, and writing skills help me convey them naturally and accurately in the target language Moreover, in terms of speaking, I have improved my pronunciation a lot and learned how to use intonation to speak more naturally I also practiced listening frequently with many tips and techniques provided by the lecturers, which helped me become better at listening As a result, I can understand people and make them understand me better in communication.

Second, the specialized knowledge of English translation and interpretation that I learned in several subjects, namely Translation Theory and Practice, Advanced Translation, and Discourse Analysis, will be of great help for my later jobs because only with adequate specialized knowledge of English can translators produce a quality translation To illustrate, through the lessons in Translation Theory and Practice, and Advanced Translation, I know how to flexibly apply different methods of translation in different cases, instead of only using word-for- word translation or literal translation, which basically makes the translation products unnatural and inappropriate In addition, the practice of translation at the university equipped me with the skill of properly using various lexical items and complicated grammar structures, such as relative clauses, conditional sentences, passive voices, and cleft sentences, to avoid a boring translated product Moreover, the subject of Discourse Analysis assisted me in clarifying the information and analyzing the main contents of the entire text before carrying out the translation without misunderstanding or changing the author’s messages conveyed in the original text.

Third, the knowledge about the literature and history of English taught at university in some subjects like Intercultural Communication, and English and American literature helped me enrich my in-depth cultural and historical knowledge, which is vital in comprehending the importance, and implications of the text that needed to be translated Each language has its own culture, and translators need to know their audience in both languages because their role is to facilitate the transfer of message, meaning, and cultural elements from one language to another. Understanding the cultural distinctions helps me select appropriate equivalents to the slang, idioms, and proverbs used in the document.

During the internship period, I encountered several difficulties and challenges, however, with my effort and my supervisor’s support, I figured out the solutions to such problems.

First, time management was the challenge that I experienced in the beginning.

Conclusion

The internship provides a precious opportunity for me to become acquainted with translation work, discover my potential, and have amazing experiences I am deeply grateful for the support and encouragement of my supervisor, my family, and all my friends and lecturers at the Faculty of English, Hanoi Open University because during my internship period, I could review, reinforce, and apply what I learned in four years at the university and simultaneously develop many new skills.

To be specific, I enhanced my translation skills, enriched my vocabulary knowledge, improved my reading comprehension skills, and attained several soft skills, such as time management skills, communication skills, and problem-solving skills All the experiences, lessons, and skills that I improved and acquired helped me better shape my future and served as stepping stones to my success.

When applying what I learned at the university to my internship, I found out the strengths and shortcomings of the university programs In terms of the strong points, first of all, students are provided with a solid theoretical foundation through very helpful classes, as most of the subjects have high applicability in practice All the lecturers are very dedicated and enthusiastic about giving the students useful knowledge, necessary techniques, and a deeper understanding of the field of translation as well as the English language Besides, students can freely raise their voices and have discussions with their lecturers or instructors, which helps improve their communication skills and rhetorical skills In addition, the university provides students with a wonderful academic environment, where they can learn from each other and from brilliant lecturers They can also take part in plenty of academic clubs or extracurricular activities to acquire many essential soft skills With those things, university students can land decent jobs in the future.

However, university curricula still have many drawbacks The first thing is the lack of practical knowledge and soft skills taught Teachers sometimes tend to focus too much on the theoretical aspects of the subjects without reducing the gaps between theories and practice The shortage of practical projects and necessary skills makes students find it hard to deal with the actual problems Next, students do not have many opportunities to apply and practice what they learned; hence, they may feel discouraged and not have a clear orientation to their later occupations.

Recommendations

Based on my four-year period of study at the university and my actual experiences during the internship, I would like to put forward some recommendations.

Firstly, regarding the university curriculum, it is entirely necessary that the school organize more extracurricular activities for students to gain practical experience and develop the skills needed for their future careers When students are granted the opportunity to use English in actual contexts, they can immensely improve their proficiency at this language Instead of focusing too much on the theoretical knowledge in the textbooks, students need more exchange activities, academic competitions, and opportunities to communicate frequently with foreign teachers or experts Besides, the lesson plans for each subject should be more creative, interactive, and fun, which can boost the students’ engagement and attention in the class Lecturers might as well make the most of technology to excite students during the class, and each lesson designed should employ a student- centered approach, making students feel empowered, hence increasing the efficiency of the lesson.

Secondly, the skill that needs to be added to the university programs is time management skill A college environment’s freedom and flexibility can derail students who have not mastered time-management skills Having left high school's rigidly structured schedules behind, university students often struggle to balance academic, personal, and work commitments after arriving on campus When confronted with so many competing demands on their time, many students simply give up and let the situation take its course Hence, they should be trained and taught how to organize their time properly, which can lead to their success in studying and later work.

Thirdly, there are several subjects or skills already taught at the university that need to be focused on The first one is that the study time and the number of credits for translation courses are not enough yet Becoming a good translator requires in- depth social knowledge and a lot of skills and practice; however, what the students are equipped with at the university is still inadequate, making them confused, unconfident, and lacking a clear career orientation For this reason, the university should increase the number of credits for the subjects relating to translation or interpretation and create opportunities for them to participate in real work In addition, presentation skills should be taught and highly focused on from the first year at university because many students, even those in their final year, still struggle to express themselves, raise their voices, and persuade others In the translation and interpretation industry, this limitation may deprive them of many job opportunities, while those with good presentation skills can easily get well-paid jobs and earn great achievements.

Last but not least, to have a successful internship course, those who will be participating in the internship in the future need to constantly update their knowledge and develop their vocabulary by reading books or watching the news, equip themselves with necessary hard skills and soft skills, learn from previous experiences, practice and sharpen their skills on a daily basis.

A wave of layoffs that hit dozens of US companies toward the end of 2022 shows no sign of slowing down into 2023.

On Tuesday, fintech giant PayPal announced that it would be cutting 2,000 employees, which is around 7% of the company's total workforce.

In a statement announcing the layoffs on PayPal's website, CEO and president Dan Schulman noted that the reductions will take place over the following weeks "with some organizations impacted more than others."

PayPal is one among several major corporations that have already made significant cuts in the new year: Fellow tech companies, including Google and Microsoft, and finance behemoths, like Goldman Sachs, announced massive layoffs in the first weeks of 2023 amid a continued economic downturn and stagnating sales.

The downsizing followed significant reductions at companies including Twitter and Meta late last year.

The layoffs have primarily affected the tech sector, which is now hemorrhaging employees at a faster rate than at any point during the pandemic, the Wall Street Journal reported According to data cited by the Journal from Layoffs.fyi, a site tracking layoffs since the start of the pandemic, tech companies slashed more than 150,000 in 2022 alone — compared to 80,000 in 2020 and 15,000 in 2021.

The wave of mass layoffs is now expanding beyond tech and into economic bellwethers: industrial company 3M, and material company Dow recently announced cuts.
