Furthermore, I will analyze the vocabulary, deal with the challenges, and structure difficult phrases in the hint version. Phuoc 4.2 Structure The structure plays an important role in the translation process In the text, there are a lot of structures that are difficult to translate Some complex structures exist and require translators to master grammatical structures in the source language in order to properly translate the meaning of the text into the target language In the following, I analyze some typical structures that are quite important in the translation process 4.2.1 Simple sentence A simple sentence has one main clause and no subordinate clause It expresses a complete thought Example 1: “These interactions were the cause of distress more often than customers, work pressure, company policies, or personal problems.” [L11, P36] This is simple sentence These interactions/ were/ the cause of distress more often than customers, S V C work pressure, company policies, or personal problems => Structure: SVC My suggested version: “Sự tương tác nguyên nhân gây tình trạng thường xuyên khó chịu khách hàng, áp lực cơng việc, sách cơng ty hay vấn đề cá nhân.” Example 2: In the sentence “Leaders have always played an emotional role” [L6, P7] This is a simple sentence Leaders/ have always played/ an emotional role S V O In this sentence, “an emotional role” is a noun phrase My suggested version: “Các nhà lãnh đạo ln coi vai trị xúc cảm.” Example 3: In the sentence “The result is a positive emotional hijack.” [L13, P24] The result/ is/ a positive emotional hijack S V C In this sentence “a positive emotional hijack” is a noun phrase Student: Le My Trong Nhan Code: 24203103897 Graduation Paper 58 Supervisor: Duong Huu Phuoc My suggested version: “Kết mang lại nhiều cảm xúc tích cực.” 4.2.2 Compound Sentences: A compound sentence is a sentence that has at least two independent clauses joined by one of types: - Coordinations (FANBOYS: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) - Conjunctive adverbs - Semicolon Example 4: “Emotions may spread like viruses, but not all emotions spread with the same ease.” [L1, P23] This sentence includes two clauses that are completely independent The first independent clause is “Emotions may spread like viruses” and the second independent clause is “not all emotions spread with the same ease” Besides, they are linked together with coordinating conjunction “but”, so this sentence is called a compound sentence The first independent clause is: Emotions/ may spread/ like viruses S V O The second independent clause is: Not all emotions/ spread/ with the same ease S V A And the form of the sentence is: Independent Clause + coordinator + Independent Clause My suggested version: “Cảm xúc lây lan virus, khơng phải cảm xúc dễ dàng lây lan nhau.” Example 5: “Similarly, of all emotional signals, smiles are the most contagious; they have an almost irresistible power to make others smile in return.” In this sentence, there are two independent clauses First one begins with “smiles” and ends with “contagious” Besides, second one is from “they” to “return” Furthermore, they joined together by semicolon and conjunctive adverb “Similarly” Thus, this is called a compound sentence The first independent clause cười thứ dễ lan tỏa nhất, chúng có sức hấp dẫn khơng thể cưỡng lại khiến cho người khác phải mỉm cười đáp lại.” Example 6: “Leaders with that kind of talent are emotional magnets; people naturally gravitate to them” [L1, P30] There are two independent clauses in this sentence The first one is “Leaders with that kind of talent are emotional magnets” and the second one is “people naturally gravitate to them” Besides, they are linked together by “semicolon” So, this sentence is called a compound sentence The first independent clause is: Leaders with that kind of talent/ are/ emotional S V C Magnets The second independent clause is: people/ naturally gravitate/ to them S V O And the form of the sentence is: Independent Clause + Semicolon+ Independent Clause My suggested version: “Các nhà lãnh đạo với nhiều tài coi nam châm cảm xúc, người bị thu hút chúng.” 4.2.3 Complex sentences A complex sentence is a sentence that contains an independent clause and one or more dependent clauses An independent clause can stand alone as a sentence, but a dependent clause even though it has a subject and a verb cannot stand alone The word used to link an independent clause to a dependent clause is called a subordinating conjunction Some common subordinating conjunctions: after, although, as, because, before, how, if, once, since, then, that, though, till, until, Student: Le My Trong Nhan kinds of dependent clause used in complex sentences: ADJECTIVE CLAUSE, NOUN CLAUSE, AND ADVERB CLAUSE 4.2.3.1 Complex structures with noun clauses The first type of dependent clause used to create complex sentences is the noun clause A noun clause is a dependent clause that functions as subjects, direct objects, indirect objects, predicate nominatives or objects of a preposition There are three types: that-clauses, wh-word clauses, and if/whether clauses Example 7: “One of the oldest laws in psychology holds that beyond a moderate level, increases in anxiety and worry erode mental abilities.” [L18, P36] In this sentence, the clause “that beyond a moderate level, increases in anxiety and worry erode mental abilities” is a noun clause functioning as the object of verb “hold” Depending on the analysis, this is my translation: Suggested version: “Một định luật lâu đời tâm lý học cho cho vượt mức độ vừa phải, gia tăng lo lắng lo lắng làm hao tổn tinh thần.” Example 8: “Research in intensive care units has shown that the comforting presence of another person not only lowers the patient’s blood pressure, but also slows the secretion of fatty acids that block arteries.” The clause “that the comforting presence of another person not only lowers the patient’s blood pressure, but also slows the secretion of fatty acids that block arteries” is a noun clause functioning as the object of verb “shown” The whole sentence will be translated as: Suggested version: “Nghiên cứu đơn vị chăm sóc đặc biệt diện an ủi người khác không làm giảm huyết áp bệnh nhân mà làm chậm trình tiết axit béo gây tắc nghẽn động mạch.” 4.2.3.2 Complex structures with adjective clauses The second type of dependent clause used to create complex sentences is the adjective clause, also called a relative clause An adjective clause is a dependent clause that functions as an adjective, in other words, it modifies a noun or pronoun Student: Le My Trong Nhan Code: 24203103897 Graduation Paper 61 Supervisor: Duong Huu Phuoc An adjective clause begins with one of the following relative pronouns: that, which,who, whom, whose, and relative adverbs: why, when, where There are two types of relative clauses: Defining Relative Clauses (also called identifying relative clauses or restrictive relative clauses) give detailed information defining a general term or expression Defining relative clauses are not put in comma Non-Defining Relative Clauses (also called non-identifying relative clauses or non-restrictive relative clauses) give additional information on something, but not define it Non-defining relative clauses are put in comma Example 9: “Leaders who maximize the benefits of primal leadership drive the emotions of those they lead in the right direction.” In this sentence, the relative clause “who maximize the benefits of primal leadership” funtions as an adjective modifying for noun “leader” Besides, this clause is not put in comma, so it is called defining relative clause Suggested version: “Những nhà lãnh đạo tối đa hóa lợi ích khả lãnh đạo nguyên thủy thúc đẩy cảm xúc người mà họ lãnh đạo theo hướng đắn.” Example 10: “Cardiac care units where the nurses’ general mood was “depressed” had a death rate among patients four times higher than on comparable units.” [L20, P45] In this sentence, the clause “where the nurses’ general mood was “depressed” is a relative clause that plays as an adjective modifying for noun phase “Cardiac care units” Besides, this clause is not put in comma, so it is called defining relative clause Suggested version:“Tại đơn vị chăm sóc mạch vành, y tá thường mang tâm trạng chung “chán nản” thường có tỷ lệ bệnh nhân tử vong cao gấp bốn lần so với đơn vị tương đương.” 4.2.3.2 Complex structures with adverbial clauses The third type of dependent clause used to create complex sentences is the adverbial clause, sometimes referred to as an adverb clause, which is a group of words that, together, There are nine types of adverbial clauses: manner, place, condition, reason, time, purpose, comparison, concession, and results Example 11: “When people raised a question for the group as a whole, they would keep their eyes on the leader to see his or her response.” [L7, P20] In this sentence, the independent clause is “they would keep their eyes on the leader to see his or her response” and the dependent clause is “When people raised a question for the group as a whole” which is considered an adverbial clause of time Suggested version: “Khi người đưa câu hỏi cho nhóm, họ để mắt đến người lãnh đạo để xem câu trả lời gì.” Example 12: “Although emotions and moods may seem trivial from a business point of view, they have real consequences for getting work done.” [L1, P32] We can see that “Although emotions and moods may seem trivial from a business point of view” is a dependent clause which considers as adverb clause of concession, and “they have real consequences for getting work done.” is an independent clause in this sentence Suggested version: “Mặc dù theo quan điểm nhà kinh doanh, cảm xúc tâm trạng quan trọng chúng thực có tác động lớn việc hồn thành công việc.” Example 13: “When the designated leader lacks credibility for some reason, people may turn for emotional guidance to someone else who they trust and respect.” [L3, P21] In this sentence, there are two dependent clause, the first one is “When the designated leader lacks credibility for some reason” which can be seen as adverb clause of time, and the second one is “who they trust and respect” which is considered as relative clause, and the independent clause is “people may turn for emotional guidance to someone else” Suggested version: “Khi người lãnh đạo bổ nhiệm thiếu tín nhiệm lý người quay sang hướng cảm xúc cho người mà họ tin tưởng tơn trọng.” Student: Le My Trong Nhan Code: 24203103897 Graduation Paper 63 Supervisor: Duong Huu Phuoc 4.2.4 Compound-Complex Sentences A compound – Complex sentence is comprised of at least two independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses Example 14: “Leaders were also usually the first to speak out on a subject, and when others made comments, their remarks most often referred to what the leader had said than to anyone else’s comments.” In this sentence, there are two independent clauses which are “Leaders were also usually the first to speak out on a subject” and “their remarks most often referred to”, and two dependent clauses, the first one is “when others made comments” and the second one is “what the leader had said than to anyone else’s comments” Besides, they are linked by a coordinator “and”, so it is called compound-complex sentence Suggested version: “Những nhà lãnh đạo thường người phát biểu vấn đề người khác đưa nhân xét, nhận xét họ thường đề cập đến mà nhà lãnh đạo bàn luận đề cập đến lời nhận xét người khác.” Example 15: “Leaders typically talked more than anyone else, and what they said was listened to more carefully.” In this sentence, there are two independent clause, the first one is “Leaders typically talked more than anyone else” and the second one is “what they said was listened to more carefully”, and the dependent clause is “what they said”, besides they are linked by a condinator “and” Hence, it is called compound-complex sentence Suggested version: “Các nhà lãnh đạo thường nói nhiều người khác họ đưa ý cách kỹ lưỡng.” 4.2.5 Passive voice The passive voice is used when the writer wants to emphasize the action (the verb) and the object of a sentence rather than subject This means that the subject is either less important than the action itself or that we don’t know who or what the subject is Each tense has its own passive voice created using a form of the auxiliary verb + V3 (past participle): S + BE + PAST PARTICIPLE Student: Le My Trong Nhan Code: 24203103897 Graduation Paper 64 Supervisor: Duong Huu Phuoc Example 16: “The CEOs and their management team members were assessed on how upbeat—energetic, enthusiastic, determined—they were [L10, P40] In this sentence, the author used passive form for the verb “assessed” I kept the passive structure to transfer the idea by using the word “được” This is my suggested translation : Suggested version: “Những CEO thành viên nhóm quản lý họ đánh giá mức độ lạc quan động, nhiệt tình tâm mà họ có.” Example 17: They were also asked how much conflict and tumult the top team experienced, that is, personality clashes, anger and friction in meetings, and emotional conflicts [L15, P40] In this sentence, the author used passive form for the verb “asked” I kept the passive structure to transfer the idea by using the word “được” This is my suggested translation : Suggested version: “Họ hỏi số lần xung đột rắc rối mà họ trải qua, xung đột tính cách, giận xích mích họp, xung đột cảm xúc.” Student: Le My Trong Nhan Code: 24203103897 Graduation Paper 65 Supervisor: Duong Huu Phuoc CHAPTER 5: DIFFICULTIES AND SOLUTIONS 5.1 Difficulties As a student majoring in English Translating and Interpreting at Duy Tan University, I have been guided in many translation skills through theoretical as well as practical subjects However, it is not easy to translate and analyze a real text I understand that in order to translate a document correctly, not only I have indepth expertise in grammatical structure and vocabulary, but I also have the knowledge in many fields to better understand the text I translate However, in the process of writing my graduation report I faced many difficulties The first difficulty that I would like to mention is vocabulary Some words have multiple meanings and are abstract, so I have to spend a lot of time looking up words on the internet and various dictionaries to find the most relevant and accurate terms Sometimes, in many sentences I know the exact meaning of each word, but when I put them together, I don't know how to translate them into the target language smoothly Besides, there are many words that require us not only to understand its meaning but also to rely on context to determine the true meaning of words Therefore, this is a big challenge for me in the translation process Secondly, the problem that I mentioned in the sentence structure We can see that there are linguistic and structural differences in speech between Vietnamese and English Therefore, it requires us to translate without losing the real meaning of that sentence Moreover, during the translation process, I forgot some grammatical forms, so it was difficult for me to clearly analyze the structure of compound or complex sentences In addition, there are many different types of clauses in each sentence structure, thus making me a bit of confusion during translation Therefore, I would like to ask for the guidance of teachers and friends to understand the most accurately and from there, I can translate in the best way Thirdly, the documents I chose to translate are related to emotional intelligence, and its application in leadership for a group and an organization Therefore, this requires me to carefully study the author's writing style to choose the right to put our position in the author's mind to understand the depth that the author wants to convey to the reader It took me a long time to get a general understanding of the content and writing style that the author wanted to convey so that I could use equivalent words for the source and target languages in the most effective way Finally, an important aspect of the translation process is to express ideas in a way that is fluent, natural, and brief and succinct so that the reader can better understand the content of the text Therefore, I have to try to read many times, find out many documents to help me translate the best 5.2 Solutions During the process of doing my graduation thesis, I faced many difficulties in translating However, I learned and received support from teachers and friends, I was able to find a way to solve problems or problems in the translation process Here, I would like to present some solutions that have supported me in completing my graduation paper The first thing, it is very important and useful when doing my graduation thesis that I have researched and consulted some graduate theses of seniors to better understand how an essay works What the essay is really like, and pay attention to the direction of the teacher to best understand the essay you In addition, it is very useful to skim the entire text, so that we can get a glimpse of what we need to translate Moreover, in the process of analysis, I read many books on structure and grammar to ensure a solid amount of knowledge to conduct sentence analysis Secondly, I often research a lot of news and books related to my translation for typical terms and languages commonly used in practice In addition, I also use many different dictionaries such as SoHa Dictionary, Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary, and Cambridge dictionary to help me look up vocabulary However, it is not always possible to find the exact meaning of a word in structures or sentences that I translate but are if we know how to divide the time properly for our graduation project We should have a specific schedule for our project plan to avoid errors and bring high efficiency to work Those are all my shares is one of the best books I have ever read Through this book I understood that to be a good leader, I must know how to coordinate my personal feelings, especially in handling situations Thanks to that, it helps me to manage myself, and my relationships with the environment around me Through the process of making the project, I realized my shortcomings I realize that in order to become a good particular I hope that my suggestions will be useful to our university First of all, I think that the faculty should organize some extra-curricular activities such as English clubs, teach some subjects to supplement social knowledge for students, or extracurricular sessions on interpreting skills to help students gain more knowledge and practice in many different fields Secondly, I think that every student should learn a lot of knowledge in the major related to economic report translation or literary translation, etc., which are compulsory, not optional Because I find that when working at translation companies, we can have more flexibility in translating in many different fields Thirdly, I think it would be helpful to add more languages to the curriculum From there, students can freely choose the language with their passion, thereby bringing good results in their studies Finally, I find that students are still quite confused about the structure as well as the grammar
