UNIT 13: Zz LESSON 3: Part 6, 7 I Objective:

1 Language focus:

- By the end of the lesson, students will be able to practise the sound of the letter Z z and the coresponding words

- Learn and practise reading skills Sight words: zero

2 Skill:

- Listening, speaking, reading, writing 3 Attitude:

- Encourage Ss to use the structure more regulary II Teaching aids:

- Book, CD, phonics cards, paper including the lyrics of the chant III Method:

- Model – Talk - Practice, individual work, pair work, group work - Some techniques can be used: music chairs

2 Warm up (5’)

Activity: What is it?

- Teacher holds up a phonics card, partly hidden by a sheet of paper

- Slowly reveal the phonics cards and ask Ss try to guest what the phonics card is - Teacher can use some more cards from the previous units

3 New lesson

Activity 1: Which one is begin with the Z sound?

- Ask Ss to take out their colour pencils/ crayons - Point to the letters and elicit the letters and the sounds for each

- Ask the students to colour the pictures, use any colour they like

- Go around the class providing any necessary help

Activity: Which One Is Missing? Game (5’)

- Put the phonics cards face up on the table/stick them on the board (may use some cards from the

previous lessons)

- Give the students 10 seconds to look at the cards - Have students close their eyes and then you take away one cards

- Tell the students to open their eyes and name the missing cards

7 Listen, point and repeat Colour the pictures of the words that start with the z sound Say the z

words (10’)

- Show the Ss the watermelon phonics card Point to it and say: /z/ - Zero Ask them to repeat.

- Mime playing the violin and say: /z/ - Zero Encourage the students to the same

- Play the CD Ss listen, point to and repeat the word - Point to the picture and have students name them - Allow the students some time to colour in the pictures of words start with the /z/ sound

- Go around the class providing any necessary help

Activity: Make up words (8’)

- T put up the four phonics cards on the board

- Write some letters on the board (make sure that the letters can make up the four words of the phonics cards)

- Explain to the Ss that they have to make up words from the given letters

- Ask them to write down in their notebook the words they can make up

- Tell the Ss to refer to the phonics cards for help - After a limited time, ask the students to say out the words they made up

7 Listen, point and repeat Colour the pictures of the words that start with the z

2 Warm up (5’)

- T ask Ss to find out and write as many Zz as they can in two minutes - Ss write the most they will be winner

- T monitors and corect their mistake New lesson

Activity 1: Trace and say (8’)

- Write on the board the capital letter Z (write slowly to demonstrate its formation)

- Point to it and elicit the sound /z/

- Show the formation in the air (taking care when facing to the students that the letter is formed the correct way for them)

- Repeat with the small letter z

- Ss trace the letters in their activity books

- Go around and provide any necessary help Ask the students to say the sound of the letter

Activity 2: Trace and match (8’)

- T divide the class into teams, A and B Ask students from each team to come to the board - Write the zoo, zebra, zip, zero on the board - Teacher calls out/ shows the phonics card of one of the phonic cards, the students have to race to touch the word

- Ss who touches first wins a point for team

Activity 3: Write the letter Zz Colour the pictures

- Point to the pictures and elicit their names - Ask the Ss to write the letter Zz in the box

- Ask Ss to colour the pictures that start with the z sound

Activity 4: Look & tick (ü) the correct sound (5’)

- Point to the letters and say the sounds - Point to the pictures and elicit their names - Ask Ss to tick the correct sound for each item - Go around the classroom and provide any necessary help

Activity: Guess (5’)

- Divide the class into two teams, A and B

- Ask a student from one team to come to the board - Whisper one of the vocabulary words

- Without speaking, the student draw a picture of the word on the board

- The first team to guess the word wins a point - Repeat the activity with a Ss from the other team
