They had to observe and score the stusents’ performance. The maximum score for each activity was 15. the end of the competition they would announce the total score of each group. The group that got the highest core would be the winner. 6. The winner would be awarded a set of CDs for studying English and an Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary TASK 3 (5’) -Asks Ss to work in groups of 3, read paragraph 3 again and complete the sentences - Asks every groups to write them on the board - Corrects their mistakes Correct answers: 1.to complete the poem – He had difficulty reciting the poem because he could not remember the last sentence 2. became the winner, it got 70 points 3. 60 4. “For me the most important thing was our participation in the competition and the enjoyment we had from it.” AFTER YOU READ (6’) - Asks Ss to work in groups of 4, - Asks Ss to read the poem aloud once or twice and gets Ss to repeat each line after him/ her. T should draw Ss’ attention to the rhythm and intonation when reciting the poem. - Let Ss practise reciting the poem in their own groups. SPEAKING I. Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: - Give opinions about different competitions and programs - Express in English about their agreement or disagreement about the kinds of competitions in school II. Materials: - E 11, pictures, (colored) chalks, cassette III. Anticipated problems: Some students seem too shy to share opinions IV. Teaching procedures 1. Classroom procedures 2. Warm - up Greeting - Asks Ss some questions to help them motivate the lesson + Have you ever took part in any competition. ? + Can you tell me some competitions? Introduce the new lesson II. Pre-speaking Task 1: Which of the competitions / contests below do you like or dislike? Put a tick ( ) in the right column. - Asks Ss to read the information from the table - Explain or elicits the meanings of the new words. T might also want to get Ss to name some contests under each category. E.g. General knowledge quiz includes “Hành trình văn hoá”, “Ai là triệu phú?”, etc. Singing contests include “Sao Mai”, “Sao Mai điểm hẹn”, etc. - Asks Ss to work in pairs, ask and answer the question from the table on the book. - Asks Ss to compare the answers with a partner - Asks Ss to give answers - Corrects the mistakes III. While-speaking Task 2: Ask your partner how he / she feels about each type of the competitions/ contests in Task 1 - Introduces the task and calls on one or two pairs of Ss to read aloud the sample dialogue. - Corrects errors, if any. - Goes over the table of useful expressions on page 69 and explains new words to Ss when necessary. - Elicits the structures that are used for asking for and giving opinions about contests. - Writes these structures on the board and gets Ss to do some practice before putting them in groups and do the task. IV. Post-speaking TASK 3: Retell the competition - Puts Ss into groups of 3-4. -Tells each group to choose a famous TV game/ talent show or competition/ contest and work out details about it. (They should not let other groups know what game/ contest it is.) - Goes around to offer help. - Calls on each group to come to the front. The whole class will ask questions about the game/ contest and guess what game/ contest it is. -Asks other groups to correct. - Corrects the mistakes V. Paul: The history of Boston Marathon. Trang: It sounds interesting! How often is it held? Paul: Every year, in the USA. Trang: When did it begin? Paul: In 1897. And the same year, John McDermott won the first Boston Athletic Association Marathon. Trang: Who was John McDermott? Where did he come from? Paul: He was the first man who won the first Boston Marathon in the USA. Ha came from New York. Trang: How long did it take him to reach the finish? Paul: He clocked 2 hours 50 minutes and 10 seconds. Trang: Did women have right to participate in long distance running? Paul: Yes . But not until 1967, women were formally accepted to take part in the Boston races . A few years later, Kuscsik became the first official female champion. Trang: When did she win the race? Paul: In 2972. There were 8 women starting the race and all 8 finished. Trang: Is the race held for only American people? Paul: No. Each year, more runners from every part of the world join it. In 1984, 6164 runners from 34 countries ran in the marathon. Trang: What are the rules of the Boston Marathon? Paul: The Boston race is about 42 km.
