LISTENING LESSON Unit 14: THE WORLD CUP

I. Class description:

- Number of students: 26 students, 1 boy and 25 girls

- Grade: 10th

- Language Proficiency: Pre – intermediate

II. Time: 45 minutes

III. Objectives:

After the lesson, Ss will be able to:

Skills:

- Listen for specific information and detailed information

- Talk about the famous football player: Pele’

Language:

- Know more about the certain expressions and vocabulary items related to the topic “The World Cup”

IV. Assumed knowledge

- Ss have already known some vocabulary items related to the topic

- Students are familiar with working in pairs and groups

V. Anticipated problems

- There may be time left, so the teacher should prepare an extra listening exercise

VI. Teaching aids: Textbook, computer, tape recorder, handout, blackboard, chalk.

“I’m going to divide you guys into 2 big groups, this side is group A, and this side is group B

Here I have 12 pieces of paper with 12 pictures related to the topic “The World Cup” Two groups will take turn to play the game Each time, one member from one group

- Listen to the teacher’s instructions

- Work in groups

- Give the answer to T

to describe (maybe use

language and speak in English only) the pictures to other Ss in your group, who have to guess the words related

to those pictures.

If your group can guess the right word, you get 1 point for your group For each correct guess, your group gets 1 point.

Remember: You have a

maximum of 30 seconds for describing each picture After 30 seconds,

if your group cannot guess what the word is, then the other groups get the chance to describe the picture, and get point.

- Ss take turn to be the representative After all the pictures have been

guessed, the game ends

- Model for the class to help them fully understand (Do)

- Then check to make sure that all Ss understand how to play

by asking some questions (Check):

“How many groups do

we have?” (two groups)

“Will two groups play at the same time or take turn?(take turn)

“Can you speak, or describe the picture in Vietnamese?(No)

“For the next word, does the same member of each group continue to play?”

(No)

“Are you ready? Ok, let’s start”

- Have the first Ss from one group to come to the board, chooses one picture, describe for other

Ss in his/her group to guess

- 1 point for each correctly guessed word

5 Retirement (n) /

- Can you guess the word

“retirement” here?

- Yeah, it’s mean “nghỉ hưu”

- T writes the word on the board and lets Ss repeat the word and 2 or 3 times

- Play the game: Slap the board

- T divide the class into 2 groups

- T puts the new words all over the board-not in

a list

- Each student from each team come to the board and asks Ss to stand at equal distance from blackboard

- T calls out one of the new words in English or

in Vietnamese in a loud voice

- The two students must run forward and slap the word on the black board

- T asks Ss to pronounce

or read aloud the words

- The one who slaps the correct word first is the winner

sure that all Ss understand how to play

Pelé is considered one of the greatest football players of all time He was born in 1940 in

Brazil As a football player, Pelé was famous for his powerful kicking and controlling the ball

He joined a Brazilian football club in 1956, and in 1962 he led the team to its first World Cup

championship Pele’ became the only player to participate in three World Cups in 1958, 1962,

and 1970 By 1974, Pelé had scored 1,200 goals and became a Brazilian national hero He played

for an American football club for two years before he retired in 1977 Later Pelé became an

international ambassador for the sport, working to promote peace and understanding through

friendly sport activities
