UNIT 14: THE WORLD CUP

READING

(1 period – 45 minutes)

Objectives:

By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to:

- Gain more knowledge about the biggest football event on the world – the World Cup

- Know more about the history of the World Cup

- Learn more vocabulary, both meaning and pronunciation

- Improve their reading skill

Teaching Method: Communicative approach.

Teaching Aids: Textbook, handouts, pictures, extra board, etc.

Procedure:

I Warm up: (5 minutes)

- Invite Ss to join a simple activity: Answer some

Question

- Ask Ss some questions and call some of them to

answers

- Give feedback

1 Play a song and ask Ss what the title of this song

2 Look at the picture and guess the name of the sport?

3 What is the name of this famous football team?

4 What is the name of this instrument which is very

popular in South Africa in 2010?

* Lead: “The Cup of Life”, “football, “Brazil” and

“vuvuzela are well-known in the same big event Can

you tell me the name of this event?

- Work individually

- Listen carefully the questions and answer to receive some presents from T

- Suggested answers:

1 The Cup of Life.

2 Football.

3 Brazil.

4 Vuvuzela

- The name of the event is the World Cup

II Pre-reading:

Activity 1: (5 minutes)

- Give Ss handouts and ask Ss to do to know more

about the 2002 World Cup

- Call some Ss to stand up and speak aloud the

answers

Handout:

1 How often is the World Cup held?

- Work in pairs

- Do the handout quickly and compare the answers with their partners

- Keep it to check after reading

- Get Ss to read the passage again and do Task 1 in the

to match the words with their definitions

- Give feedbacks

- Whole class

- Look at the vocabulary and the illustrating picture

- Try to guess the Vietnamese equivalent

- Raise hand and speak aloud the answers

- Write down in the notebook

- Repeat aloud

- Work in pairs

- read the passage silently and discuss with their friends to do task 1

- Raise hand and match the answers on the board after reading aloud

- Suggested answer:

- Ask Ss to scan quickly the passage to recognize the

general idea

- Play the tape for Ss to listen

Activity 2: (8 minutes)

- Get Ss to read the passage again and do Task 2 in the

- Scan quickly the passage in the textbook, page 147

- Listen carefully the tape to learn the pronunciation of some words they don’t know

- Work in pairs

their partners

- Call some Ss to stand up and read aloud the answer

Activity 3: (7 minutes)

- Ask Ss to do Task 3 in the textbook then compare
