UNIT 14: THE WORLD CUP READING (1 period – 45 minutes) Objectives: By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to: - Gain more knowledge about the biggest football event on the world – the World Cup. - Know more about the history of the World Cup - Learn more vocabulary, both meaning and pronunciation. - Improve their reading skill. Teaching Method: Communicative approach. Teaching Aids: Textbook, handouts, pictures, extra board, etc. Procedure: Teacher 's activities Students’ activities I. Warm up: (5 minutes) - Invite Ss to join a simple activity: Answer some Question. - Ask Ss some questions and call some of them to answers. - Give feedback. 1. Play a song and ask Ss what the title of this song. 2. Look at the picture and guess the name of the sport? 3. What is the name of this famous football team? 4. What is the name of this instrument which is very popular in South Africa in 2010? * Lead: “The Cup of Life”, “football, “Brazil” and “vuvuzela are well-known in the same big event. Can you tell me the name of this event? - Work individually. - Listen carefully the questions and answer to receive some presents from T. - Suggested answers: 1. The Cup of Life. 2. Football. 3 Brazil. 4 Vuvuzela - The name of the event is the World Cup. II. Pre-reading: Activity 1: (5 minutes) - Give Ss handouts and ask Ss to do to know more about the 2002 World Cup. - Call some Ss to stand up and speak aloud the answers. Handout: 1. How often is the World Cup held? - Work in pairs. - Do the handout quickly and compare the answers with their partners. - Keep it to check after reading. 1 A. Every year B. Every 2 years C. Activity 1: (5 minutes) - Provide some vocabulary. - Give out the words and their meanings pictures to illustrate them. - Ask Ss to give the Vietnamese equivalents. + jointly (adv): cùng nhau. + the globe (n): địa cầu + tournament (n): vòng thi đấu + host nation(n): + Trophy (n): Activity 2: (5 minutes) - Get Ss to read the passage again and do Task 1 in the textbook. - Glue the extra board about Task 1 then ask some Ss to match the words with their definitions. - Give feedbacks. - Whole class. - Look at the vocabulary and the illustrating picture. - Try to guess the Vietnamese equivalent. - Raise hand and speak aloud the answers - Write down in the notebook. - Repeat aloud. - Work in pairs. - read the passage silently and discuss with their friends to do task 1. - Raise hand and match the answers on the board after reading aloud. - Suggested answer: 1. Jointly: involving two or more people or groups 2. The globe: the world. 3. Tournament (n): a competition in which players compete against each other in a series of games intil there is a winner. 4. Host nation: a country that provide the necessary space, facilities, etc. for a special event. 5. Trophy (n): a prize for winning a competition. III. While reading: Activity 1: (2 minutes) - Ask Ss to scan quickly the passage to recognize the general idea. - Play the tape for Ss to listen. Activity 2: (8 minutes) - Get Ss to read the passage again and do Task 2 in the - Whole class. - Scan quickly the passage in the textbook, page 147. - Listen carefully the tape to learn the pronunciation of some words they don’t know. - Work in pairs. 2 textbook. - Ask Ss to do Task 2 individually then compare with their partners. - Call some Ss to stand up and read aloud the answer. - Give feedbacks. Activity 3: (7 minutes) - Ask Ss to do Task 3 in the textbook then compare the answer with their partners. - Call some Ss to stand up and read aloud the answer. - Give feedbacks. - read the passage silently and do task 2 individually. - Work in pairs to compare answers. - Raise hand and read aloud the answers. - Suggested answers: 1. 13. 2. 32. 3.
