UNIT 14: THE WORLD CUP LISTENING (1 period – 45 minutes) Objectives: By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to: - Listen and talk about other the World Cup, especially about Pelé – a very legendary football player. - Learn more vocabulary, both meaning and pronunciation. - Improve their listening skill. Teaching Method: ESA Teaching Aids: Textbook, handouts, power point, CD players, audio CD, etc. Procedure: Teacher 's activities Students’ activities I. Warm up: (5 minutes) - Invite Ss to join a simple activity: Guessing the Year of some World Cups. - Play 3 short videos of 3 World Cup events. - Ask Ss the year when these World Cups were held. * Lead to the new lesson: Through these World Cups, there are some legendary football players discovered, and now we will start the new lesson to know more about them. Unit 14: The World Cup – Listening. - Work individually. - Watch carefully video, raise hand and give the correct answer. - Each student who gives the correct answer will receive a present. + Suggested answers: * The 2002 World Cup. * The 2006 World Cup. * The 2010 World Cup. II. Pre-listening: Activity 1: (5 minutes) - Ask Ss to look at some pictures showed on the screen. - Call some Ss to give the name of each football player and which team they played for. - Ask Ss who they like best. Activity 2: (5 minutes) - Provide some vocabulary. - Give out the words and their meanings in English to illustrate them. - Ask Ss to give the Vietnamese equivalents. - Give feedbacks. - Ask Ss to write the vocabulary in the notebook. + Goal-scorer (n): (play a video about goal-scorer) + To kick (v): look at the video T has just showed. - Work individually. - Look at the picture and give the name of each football player and which team they played for. - Answer who they like best. Suggested answer: 1. Michael Owen (England) 2. Pelé (Brazil) 3. Diego Maradona (Argentina) 4. Zidane (Francel) 5. David Beckham (England) 6. Christiano Ronaldo (Portugal) 7. Kaka (Brazil) - Whole class. - Look at the board, read carefully all the vocabulary to remember. - Stand up and try to guess the Vietnamese equivalent of some new word when T requires. - Write down all vocabulary into the notebook to learn by heart. - Listen carefully the tape and repeat. 1 + Hero (n): Ex: Hecquyn and Superman are heroes. + To retire (n): to stop after reaching a particular time. + Ambassador (n): a person who represent for some particular organizations of their countries in other countries. + To promote (v): to do actively to support something. II. While-listening: Task 1: (7 minutes) - Ask Ss to close all the textbooks. - Give each S a handout and ask them read carefully before listening. - Play the tape once for Ss to do the handout. - Ask Ss whether they want to listen again. - Call some Ss to stand up and read aloud the answers - Play the tape again to check the answer. Handout 3:Fill in the blanks. Pelé’ is considered one of the greatest football players of all time. He was born in 1940 in Brazil. V. Review and Homework: (2 minutes) - Ask Ss to review something they have just learned about Pelé. - Ask Ss to learn by heart the vocabulary at home. - Ask Ss to prepare the next lesson. - Review what they have learned about Pelé. - Copy down and do homework at home. - Prepare the next lesson.
