UNIT 1 A VISIT FROM A PEN PAL I. Obiectives : By the end of the unit students will be able to: - make and respond to introductions - scan for specific information - write a personal letter Language focus : - the past simple - the past simple with “ wish” II. Teaching aids: Casette, CD, pictures, posters, cards III. Procedure : Lesson 1 : Getting started + Listen and read Lesson 2 : Speak Lesson 3 : Listen Lesson 4 : Read Lesson 5 : Write Lesson 6 : Language focus Date of preparing : September 1, 2013 Period 1 UNIT 1 LESSON 1 GETTING STARTED- LISTEN AND READ A. Objectives: Reading a text about a visit to Hanoi of a foreign girl for the details By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to : - know some places Lan went to with a foreign friend and some activities they took part in together. - Ss improve their reading skill. B. Teaching aids : Pictures, CD, catsette, book C. Method : - chatting, rub out and remember - discussion, multiple choice. D. Contents : I. Warm up : * Chatting: T asks some questions: - Do you have any penpals? - Where does she / he live ? - Has she/ he ever visited your city ? - What would you do during the visit ? Ss answer freely. * Possible answers : - I’ll take him / her to Mui Chua / Ha long Bay / Bai Chay beach…. - I’ll take him / her to the mountains / theatre / restaurants……. - I’ll take him / her to go shopping …… III. New lesson: Step 1. Pre-reading : 1. Vocabulary : - correspond ( v ) : trao đổi thư tín ( situation ) - mosque ( n ) : nhà thờ hồi giáo ( situation ) - impress ( v ) : ấn tượng ( translate ) - pray ( v ) : cầu nguyện ( mime ) - depend ( v ) : phụ thuộc ( antonym ) * Rub out and remember 2. Open prediction: * Set the scene : Maryam- Lan’s penpal came to visit her in Hanoi. Can you guess where she went and what she did during her stay ? Ss work individually – pairs compare. T collects some Ss’s ideas Step2 : While reading : 1. Correct preditions: - Ss listen to the tape and read the text , then check their predictions - correct - answers : They visited Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum, the History Museum and the Temple of Literature, many beautiful parks and lakes in Hanoi. They went to the mosque on Hang Luoc street. 2. Multiple choice : T runs through the sentences Ss read the text, then choose the correct answers ( pairs work ) + Answers : 1. C - two weeks 2. B – Hanoi people were friendly 3. D – all the above 4. B - invite Lan to Kuala Lumpur Step 3 : Post reading : * Discussion: T asks Ss to recommen places of interest in Vietnam Ss work in groups of 4 to discuss where they should take their foreign pen pal to and what they should do. Follow the patterns : S1 : I think I should take our friends to Hue Citadel. I can go shopping or I’ll introduce a Vietnamese market. S2 : Good idea ! I think they’ll be interested in it …. They are waiting for Lan outside her school. Here is their conversation but the sentences are jumbled. You’ll work in pairs, read silently to put them in the correct orders. Ss : practice in pairs T : give the answers : 1 – c – 5 – b – 4 – d – 2 – e – 3 – a – 6 . T asks some questions to check Ss’s understanding - Have Nga and Maryam met each other before ? ( Vietnamese people are very friendly and Hanoi is a very interesting city ) Step 2 : While speaking : * Set the scene : “ You are talking to Maryam’s friends, introduce yourself ”. T runs through the suggestions. Model with one student Ss practice in pairs : choose 1 cue 2 open pairs , then close pairs T goes round and monitors. Correction * Example : A : Hello ! B : It’s a big capital city . A : I see. Step 3 : Post speaking : *Retell : Ss talk about their friends Ex : Yoko is my friend, she’s from Tokyo. This is the first time she went to VietNam. She likes VietNamese people, the food, the beaches and old cities in VietNam. IV. Summary : - Repeat the content - Listen and remember V.
