Passive forms

1 Form:

S + be + Vp.p

2 In tenses.

3 Special passive forms:

a) - Active:

S + have / get + somebody + V + something

- Passive:

S + have / get + something + Vp.p

Ex: - They have a girl do the housework

They have the housework done

- She had someone paint her house

She had her house painted

b) with some verbs of opinion: say, think, believe, know, consider, find, report,…

- Active:

S + V + that + clause (S2 + V + O)

- Passive:

It + to be + Vp.p + that + clause

Or:

S2 + to be + Vp.p + to V/ to have + Vp.p

Ex: - People think that Mary is a good singer

 It is thought that Mary is a good singer

 Mary is thought to be a good singer -People believed that she left Viet Nam last week

c) with the verb: need

- Active:

- Passive:

Notes: Special conditions

- Type 1: Thay ‘if’ thành ‘should’

- Type 2: Thay ‘if’ thành ‘were to… , S2 + will + V ’

2 Wish

- Present:

S1 + wish(es) + S2 + V-ed

Ex: - Long wishes he were taller (In fact, he isn’t tall)

-Future:
