LESSON PLAN

UNIT 6: GENDER EQUALITY Listening

Same work, same pay

1 Class profile: Non-English major students

2 Student’s level: Pre-Intermediate 3 Number of students: 45

4 Allotted time: 45 minutes

5 Date and time: October 19th, 2021 (12:30-13:15)

6 Materials: English Textbook 10 Student’s book, Vietnam Education Publishing House, and Pearson Education Publishing group 7 Objectives: At the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

- Knowledge:

• Understand the meanings of new words related to gender inequality/equality in wages and employment - Skills:

• Listening for specific information about wage discrimination • Improve speaking skills (brainstorming, presenting skill) • Pronounce new vocabularies correctly

8 Assumption:

• Students can understand and do the exercise in the textbook

• Students can work in pairs and groups 9 Teaching approach: CLT

10 Teaching aids: ZOOM (Breakout room, annotate, ), PPT slides, Liveworksheet, Wordwall, Handout

11 Problems:

- Students may:

• be reluctant to take part in-class activities • not understand the instructions clearly

• be unable to find the answers to listening questions

• have uneven participation in pair/group work not hear the listening audio well - Laptop and Wifi may not function well

12 Possible solutions:

• Pick up Ss randomly and divide Ss into pairs or small groups • Give Ss bonuses in order to encourage their participation • Give brief and short instructions and check-back questions • Elicit Ss background knowledge

• Pre-teach vocabulary and provide background information before listening • Help Ss guess the meanings of the abstract terms based on the context • Check for malfunctions before class and require technical supports

T says: “I will show you 3 questions and a short video You have to look at 3 questions, then watch the video carefully and answer the questions.” Elicit questions:

“ What points do the students get ?” “Do they get the same rewards ?” “Do you agree with the rewards ?”

After watching the video, T asks Ss to share ideas T gives feedback and shows 1 more picture

T asks:” The man and the woman do the same work but they look different, why ?”

Expected answer:” The woman looks sad because she has less money “

T asks Ss to share ideas

T: “If they do the same work, both of them need to have less pay, more pay, or same pay ?

Expected answer: “Same pay” T: “ So can you guess our topic today ?”

Activity 2: Teach vocabulary

Techniques: pictures, synonyms, eliciting questions, video, short story 1 Wage ( n )

Activity 3: Vocabulary Revision Exercise

T says:'' Before moving to the next activity, I would like all of you to review the vocabulary Please hit the link:

https://www.liveworksheets.com/4-ar626025uh in the chatbox and finish the exercise in 3 minutes After that, you will come back to Zoom Who gets 10/10 will receive a bonus point Check-back questions:

• “ Where do you do the exercise? “ Expected answer: The link in the chatbox

• “ How many minutes do you have to finish the exercise? “ Expected answer: 3 minutes

After 3 minutes, Ss come back, T corrects and gives feedback: ‘ok, I would like to randomly pick some of you to give me the answers”

Activity 4: Listen to the recording Check if the following

-Teacher gives instruction and simultaneously shows exercise 3 on the screen

“We’re going to listen to a woman talking about gender equality” -T lets Ss find the keywords and predict the answers

-To review the new words and

“ Look at 6 statements below and you will have 1 minute to find keywords for all sentences Don’t forget to guess whether the statement is true or false by yourself Let’s start!”

-T invites two students to write their answers on the slide by using the annotation tool

“ I think all of you have done Good job A and B, are you there? Let’s help me find the keywords A will do the sentences 1,2,3, and the sentences 4,5,6 for B Using the annotation to do it” -Expected keywords:

1 The speaker begins his talk with gender equality in job opportunities and age

2 Wage discrimination affects women negatively 3 Women work less than men but they 4 Married men and women spend about equal amounts of time working, but women still have to spend more time on housework

5 Even now women are not allowed to join the army, the police forces or the fire services

6 More and more men are now working in jobs that used to be considered suitable for women only

- T asks some check-back questions “Where do we enter the answer?” => Answer: google form

-T shows the answers that have been collected and gives some feedback

“I’ve got all of your answers, most of you answered correctly…” -T plays the audio again (but just dialogues included the answers) to give Ss the correct answers and explains by L1

Activity 5: Listening and Complete the sentences (Mỹ Hằng) Game “ SAVE THE OCEAN”

- T asks Ss to look at exercise 4 on page 11 first

- T: Class, Now have a look at exercise 4 on page 11 T: We have four sentences and six blanks needed to fill - T asks one st to read the question out loud

- T asks Ss to use annotation tools to underline keywords of questions

- Expected keywords:

1 Wage (1) when workers are equally qualified and perform the same work, but some workers are (2) _ than others

2 Women (3) _ of the world’s work, produce 50% of the food but earn 10% of the income and (4) of the property

3 Many countries now allow and (5) _ to join the army, the police forces, and the fire services

4 More and more men are now working in jobs (6) _, cleaning, and childcare

T: Now, I will divide you into 4 breakout rooms You will discuss your answer with your friends in 2 minutes After that, we will have a game and I will pick randomly to play so everyone has to pay attention to the lesson And please remember your group number

- T shows a video on the screen “Ok, to give you the answer, I will show a short video about the sex ratio at birth in VN Do you know what “sex ratio at birth” means? (Expected answer: tỷ lệ giới tính khi sinh/ The ratio of male to female births.) - Now, watching a video and get some interesting information

- After watching the video, T asks “What is the sex ratio at birth in Vietnam?”

(Expected Answer: 111.5 boys/ 100 girls)

- “As the video show that the sex ratio at birth was high at 111.5 boys per 100 girls It means that there is a gender imbalance in our country, right? So can you tell me why? What causes gender imbalance in VN?

(Expected answer: gender inequality/ to value men above women (ss can use L1))

- T shows 2 discussion questions on the screen and divides the class into 4 groups in the breakout room to discuss “That’s right, gender inequality still exists in Vietnam So I would like you to discuss with your friends to list some possible ways to promote gender equality in Vietnam and choose the one you think is the most important and explain You will work in group in 3 minutes After that, I will invite some of you randomly to present.”
