LESSON PLAN UNIT 6: GENDER EQUALITY Student-in-charge: Hồ Quang Khải Type of lesson: Reading Student’s ID number: DAV187027 Time allowed: 45 minutes Instructor: Trần Thị Thúy Vi Date: 25/02/2022 Grade:10 Period: Class: 10C I Objectives: By the end of the lesson, the students will be able to: -Read for general ideas and specific information about gender equality in employment -Know some vocabulary relating the the topic “Gender equality” -Talk and express concepts about gender equality in front of the class II Teaching materials: textbook, LCD projector, blackboard, power point slides, colored chalk III Procedure: Time Content Warm-up: Guessing who are they? Firefighter Police Plasterer Teacher 5m Teacher and Students’ Activities -T introduces the game -T shows pictures on the screen -T asks Ss to guess the careers of people in the pictures “Who is in the picture, class?” -Ss play the game -T decides who is the winner (Big loud applause for the winners class) -T leads in Set the scene: So in the past, firefighters and plasterers were usually men, but now a lot of people who work at these careers are women To know more about that, we move on to today lesson which is about gender equality I Pre-reading TASK 1: Look at the symbols What they stand for? 10m Pre-teach vocabulary -loneliness /ˈləʊnlinəs/ (n): cô đơn (picture) -pursue /pəˈsjuː/(v): theo đuổi (picture) -sue /suː/(v): kiện (picture) -T asks Ss what the symbols stand for -Ss answer -T checks and gives feedbacks Link: “Before going to the main part of this lesson, we learn some vocabulary first.” Time Content Teacher and Students’ Activities -limitation /lɪmɪˈteɪʃn/ (n): hạn chế, giới hạn (explanation) -T elicits the new words by many -preference /ˈprefərəns/(n): thích (translation, example) different techniques Note: Handout can be utilized to save some time if necessary TASK 2: Match each of the words with its meaning Use a dictionary if necessary preference (n) a the act of controlling something; a restriction sue (v) b the state of feeling sad and alone pursue (v) c a greater interest in someone/something than someone/something else loneliness (n) d follow a course or activity in an effort to gain something limitation (n) e bring somebody to court because they have done something harmful to you Key c e d b a II.While-reading 5m TASK 3: Quickly read the text Choose the best title for it a Brenda Berkman’s Childhood b A Woman Who Did a ‘Man’s Job’ c Gender Equality in Employment As a young girl,Brenda Berkman always dreamt of becoming a firefighter, although she was aware of gender preference in favour of boys In 1977, she applied for a firefighter’s position at the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) Even though she was a marathon runner, she failed the physical test But Brenda didn’t give up She sued New York City and the FDNY for gender discrimination and won A new ‘fairer’ test was created, so she and 40 other women passed Brenda’s dream of becoming a firefighter came true However, she and other female firefighters became the targets of laughter and anger from the co-workers and local people They were unwelcomed at meals, faced loneliness and even violence There weren’t any limitations on women’s service at FDNY The women firefighters had to exactly the same jobs as their male workers To pursue a ‘man’s job’ Brenda Berkman and other women had to work very hard They paid a heavy price to win equality They were successful and even became the subjects of a documentary called Taking the Heat in 2006 Brenda Berkman’s story shows that gender differences cannot prevent a person from pursuing a job Success comes to -T uses approriate teachniques to teach vocabulary -T asks Ss to repeat in chorus then individually -T asks Ss to copy down -T runs through the task and asks Ss to work individually in minutes first, then check with a partner (Ss use a dictionary, if necessary) -T’s checking questions: “What will you you in this task class? You will work alone or in pair, class? -T walks around to assist Ss -T calls Ss to read aloud their answers -T give feedbacks -T shows answers on the screen -T asks Ss to read the text quickly and find the repeated words and their collocations (e.g firefighter / firefighter’s / firefighters, female / women / women’s, male / man’s / gender discrimination / gender differences) -T explains to Ss that repeated vocabulary in the text may imply its main idea or title: “So have you noticed that there are some repeated words in the text? They may imply the title of the text” -T has Ss skim the text to choose the best title -T invites student to answer and gives feedback: “Who can help me this task? How much time you have” -T invites some Ss to read aloud their answers -T also asks “Where did you find the information, line number?” -T checks the answers with the whole class “Right or wrong class?” -T shows answer on the screen -Ss copy down Link: “We move on to the next task, task number 5” -T runs through all the questions -T asks Ss to scan the text to find answers to the questions -Ss highlight the key words both in the questions and in the text -T has Ss take turns asking and answering in pairs “And now you will take turn to ask and answer these questions in pairs in minutes” -T’s checking question: “What will you class?
