WHAT IS A GRANT? The success of many public health programs depends on funding from grantors. These programs would not exist without the financial support of private foundations and government agencies. Grants provide money to implement interventions that address current health crises such as HIVAIDS and to implement interventions that can prevent a health problem from becoming a health crisis. THE GRANT WRITING EXPERIENCE Grant writing is an exciting and rewarding experience, yet can be intimidating to a novice. Few people are professionally trained in grant writing; however, millions of dollars are awarded each year to programs and organizations. With a little determination and clear vision, you can write a successfully funded proposal. Its best to start small with a manageable project, gain some experience in writing the proposal and managing the project, and then move on to bigger projects with larger budgets. Grant money is available from a variety of organizations, including state and federal government agencies, corporate donators, philanthropic organizations, and other grantors. This workbook will provide an introduction to the grant application process, describe the main sections of the grant application, and define the roles of the grant writing team.
