this part, I will describe the activities I did during the internship, including the tasks that I was assigned, advantage, disadvantages, the benefits and my experience at the end of the period I ASSIGNMENTS th My internship duration is eight weeks, from February 20 , 2021 to April th 18 , 2021 Within this period, other interns and I were under the supervision of Ms Nguyen Minh Trang She gave me direct tasks that I must complete Translating Translating has always been the most-related tasks for students studying in English Language major My tasks were to translate given documents, articles and magazines from English to Vietnamese and vice versa This assignment is carried out throughout the entire internship These are the documents for translating: From English to Vietnamese th Memorandum of Understanding for Water Supply Project (date: Feb 24 ) th Article ‘That Capture Tourist Heart’ (date: Mar 16 ) th PowerPoint regarding Food Security in Singapore (date: Mar 17 ) From Vietnamese to English th Letter of Intent (Water Supply Project) (date: Feb 24 ) th Article ‘Những kỷ lục vùng đất An Giang’ (date: Mar 16 ) The given documents for translation were not too difficult to accomplish After translating those documents, I found that I lacked the lexical resources for translating naturally Moreover, since I was inexperienced in translating, most of the collocations were misused, causing the whole text rather incomprehensible 11 Internship Report Instructor: Ms Nguyen Thi Xuan Hue Creating a short video clip introducing An Giang Province It is recommended by our supervisor that we should put up the video regarding these topics: agriculture, tourism, An Giang University and its Faculty of Foreign Languages The building of ideas for making the video is the most difficult It took the whole team for approximately a week to think of suitable content and structure, since we wanted to make a video in which topics must be relatable and connectable After submitting the video clip to the supervisor, she complimented us on the building of the idea for making the video; however, we seemed to forget making a proper end for the video It is our mistakes of not getting the information on official government website As a result, we ended up giving the outdated data Composing documents Seeing that mere translating is not enough for working in the future, the supervisor gave us many assignments on making various types of papers, some of which are included as bellow: rd - Letter of Intent to attract investment for projects (March ) In this task, I was assigned to write a letter to express the interest in using the fund of an organization or an investor The objective of the task was to make a brief letter of intent; however, I must be able to express fully the content of a letter of that kind, which includes the aims or objectives of the letter, the necessity or the reason why my project needs the support and the fund of the investors, how much the project needs to be funded and how project owners conduct the project - Official letter replying to a group of officials coming to local area (March rd ) Ms Trang required me to write a reply letter responding to official letters on the fact that a group of civil servants from another department were coming to work with Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of An Giang to see and evaluate the potential to implement water supply project in the area of Chau Phu commune My reply letter was fine at the content but it was 12 Internship Report Instructor: Ms Nguyen Thi Xuan Hue rather lengthy Therefore, the supervisor gave comments on my work and pointed out what should be omitted to make the letter much more concise (Please refer to Appendix A for details) th - A plan for a workshop (March ) It is my assignment that I need to make a plan for a workshop on the sharing of experience of rural development and international integration It is required that I must make a plan in details, which included the objective, estimated contents, time, duration and location of the workshop, attendants, how the workshop would be conducted, estimated cost,… Since this is the first time I had to make a workshop plan, I had a hard time thinking of what to write After that, I searched for references and completed the tasks successfully (Please refer to Appendix B for details) - A project proposal on applying successful model of raising catfish in a commune located in An Giang Province (March 9th) I was told to make a mock project proposals based on any ideas I could come up with, provided that they must be practical and enforceable My first idea was to make a proposal to promote installing trash bins in public areas of a commune We are given 200 million VND as mock fund However, the proposal was rejected due to the low possibility of carrying out The estimated cost and the given fund seemed to be unreasonable Upon presenting the second proposal, the same result and problem occurred I found a successful project implementing new model for raising Pangasius fish and I planned to reapply it in other commune in An Giang However, considering the cost of previous project (400 billion VND) and the fund of my project (200 million VND), I failed to make the project enforceable After that, I made another project proposal on building two technical rooms supporting the studying of students in Vong The School, An Giang Province This time, I succeeded in making a more enforceable and simpler project It was approved by Ms Trang later on that day Writing a CV: 13 Internship Report Instructor: Ms Nguyen Thi Xuan Hue th On March , my assignment was to create and design a CV This task was relatively easy to complete With the help of online website for creating CV, Joboko, it did not take much time to accomplish the given task During this task, I have learned that a CV must be brief and the profile picture must be clear and professional Otherwise, it is unlikely that the CV would be selected by interviewers Doing research on various things: My supervisor encouraged me and other interns to get to know about some organizations, many kinds of applications, how to operate certain machine and devices, which could be advantageous when it comes to the work we might in the future Here are some of the activities: - Learning how to use Trello (working reminder application) - Learning about VUFO – NGO Resource Centre The VUFO-NGO Resource Centre serves the community of international non-governmental organisations (INGOs) working in Vietnam It aims to improve their work by facilitating and contributing to the sharing of information, resources and experiences among the INGOs, their partners and local organisations It also aims to strengthen relationships and enhance dialogue between INGOs and other development factors in Vietnam including government agencies and donor organisations It was established in 1993 through a partnership between INGOs and the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations (VUFO) More importantly, this organization offers a wide range of job opportunities The company will hire people to work for many projects, and the demand of jobs related to English major students is also very high - Learning how to operate photocopy devices and printing devices During the internship, Mr Ly Hoai Anh had showed me and other interns basic steps to operate these devices as well as how to clear virus and other malware off the computers and how to install Windows on a new computer - Learning about Official website of many department of the government 14 Internship Report Instructor: Ms Nguyen Thi Xuan Hue - Learning about the organizing and suitable orders of meals for foreign guests Interpretation There are two main interpreting activities that I took part in They are interpretation for presenters and interpretation at site 6.1 Interpreting for presenter During other interns’ presentations, we are designated to interpret their speech It is advised that we all should take notes quickly of key information like numbers, dates, important ideas,… At the first time I practiced interpreting, I was flustered because I was unable to catch up with the presenter’s speech A part of the speech was unintentionally omitted by me, which caused a lack in expressing all the ideas of the speaker I have learned that interpreting requires high concentration 6.2 Interpreting at sites th Our schedules were to go to Phan Nam Farm on March 24 At that location, I experienced working as an interpreter at site At the destination, Mr Tam in the farm presented plants, flowers, greenhouses and other things My job was to memorize his saying and then interpret for the whole group We took turn to the job However, I was flustered and had a lot of interruption during interpreting as I was unable to remember all of his saying Upon my performance, Ms Hue and Ms Trang gave me some skills and tips in doing the job I have learned that this kind of interpreting focuses on the information or the key idea In addition, it is possible to cut off a part of the speech of present if it is too lengthy and not important Picture 4: I and other interns were interpreting the speech 15 Internship Report Instructor: Ms Nguyen Thi Xuan Hue The destination of the second time of interpreting at site was President Ton Duc Thang Memorial Zone My duty was the same as what I did last time, which was simply interpreting for local tour guide On this occasion, I have learned that to well perform interpretation, it is required to stay highly-focus at all time Moreover, it is possible to make use of English signs that are available at the place Picture 5: Interpreting at the House of President Ton Duc Thang 16 Internship Report Instructor: Ms Nguyen Thi Xuan Hue Designing leaflets rd On March 23 , Ms Trang gave us a task of designing leaflet My job was to make a leaflet that promoted the benefits of not burning the field This task only required creativity I designed leaflets via PowerPoint Picture 6: My leaflet Writing meeting minutes th On April , all of interns gathered and discusses certain topic in this task The other had to write down the opinions of the attendants and compose a meeting minutes (Please refer to Appendix C for further details) II ASSESSMENT Advantages: First and foremost, DARD is located in the urban area, which is not very far from my house It is very convenient for me since I did not have to travel for a long distance Secondly, my instructor and other teachers in the university have kept in touch with the department since students of the school choose this department for internship regularly Therefore, I did not have to take care of much paperwork or go many times to the department before internship 17 Internship Report Instructor: Ms Nguyen Thi Xuan Hue Thirdly, with the available knowledge of English that I have, I did finish the given tasks Disadvantages My knowledge of English is not enough for me to complete my tasks fast and effectively I also lacked common sense needed for actual job In addition, it was very hard to catch up with the pace of working When it came to specialized phrases of English in specific field, I had a lot of difficulties in understanding and translating it However, thanks to the dedication of Ms Trang and Ms Hue, I had learned a lot from my mistakes Experience The period of internship was a good chance for me to adapt and immerse myself in to clerical working environment I have learned a lot of skills during the internship, which would help me a lot in the future when I apply for a job I know that practicing is the best way to learn new things and develop 18 Internship Report Instructor: Ms Nguyen Thi Xuan Hue PART C CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTIONS FOR THE INTERNSHIP In this part, I would like to provide conclusion of my internship and suggest some recommendations to contribute to the better quality of the internship agency, An Giang University and Faculty of Foreign Languages I CONCLUSION The 8-weeks internship is very meaningful This is a chance that interns have to gain more knowledge and skills necessary for future career This internship inspires me to practice more and more to be a skilled translator and interpreter Not only this enables me to test evaluate myself, it allows me to know my strength and weakness so that I could develop in the right way II SUGGESTIONS Internship agency During my internship, I acknowledge that there are many great opportunities to encounter real life situation and work I think that interpreting is one of the opportunities that should be assigned more as this brings many benefits An Giang University and Faculty of Foreign Languages I realized one thing that there should be more internship courses added to the school curriculum Moreover, the students should have more study trips to some of these internship agencies so that they would have a clearer view of the practical work 19 Internship Report Instructor: Ms Nguyen Thi Xuan Hue APPENDIX A ỦY BAN NHÂN DÂN HUYỆN CHÂU PHÚ CỘNG HÒA XÃ HỘI CHỦ NGHĨA VIỆT NAM Độc lập -
