The physical art studied in this thesis is a synthetic physical art that includes the art of the physical movements of the parts of human body combined with the decoration of the human body; in which the art of physical movements on the human body plays a dominant and primary role Origin and formation process of physical art Physical art is created from the essence of physical activity; associated with human development and was formed from the need to complete activities with the desire to have the perfect physical activity to fulfill all the life problems that people want to aim for The completion goes through the process: artification (using techniques, methods) – high quality tools; Aestheticization (feeling, sense) of the physical art is formed- suitable for practice Needs, environment, selfinductance and consciousness are the four basic factors that make up physical activity, between them there is an organic relationship that is closely linked to each other to form a system of artistic activities 1.1.2 Basic content of physical art Physical art has a basic function: (1) the perfect tool to perform; (2) elite language to reflect; these two functions are also the basic values and criteria of physical art With the advantages of physical art, people use it in all areas of life, especially in art and culture If Vietnamese drama artists want to use them to perform more effectively, they need to expand, search, and exploit all physical art activities already in life and imagining to reproduce, manipulate, renewed and then accumulate into a system of physical art used in creation 1.2 Physical art in creation process 1.2.1 The sistuation of physical art on the stage of drama Vietnamese drama artists always use physical activities to build up plays, always complete all skills in using physical activities, according to the concept, the ability of each artist has different uses Physical activities affecting Vietnamese drama performance are divided into three stages: (1) Song drama influence, (2) Stanislavski generation, (3) synthetic theatrical language 1.2.2 Physical art in the performing arts 1.2.2.1 Synthetic theatrical action art Real life is still happening, with many phenomena; things, events that change in many dimensions: stability, sometimes positive, sometimes negative Difficulties and obstacles lead to failure, however, people still want to successfully accomplish the goals they want to achieve; find ways to link, perform synthetic action; completting and improving the quality of action and using synthetic action art, together as a means of handling all problems of life The task of drama is to fully reflect the essence of real life in the artist's way; synthetic action art of the character is the object that needs to be reflected, taking the actor's synthetic physical art to practice performance The process of forming synthetic theatrical language Synthetic arts used by artists on stage are synthetic art activities existing in the artist's life or imagination, once again based on theatrical criteria by the artist for creation process, accomplishing by the theatricalization process into a synthetic theatrical language that describes in detail the core values of things and phenomena fully reflecting the real nature of people's lives; the process is presented as follows: + Artization is the process by which artists use all different methods to improve the quality of synthetic artistic action; + Aestheticization is the process of self-experience of the artist Artists practice experimenting with the process of self-inductance to feel and sense the purpose of this process to bring actions close to reality + Theatricalization is a process by which artists use theatrical and dramatic techniques to artisticize and esthetize 1.2.1.2 The central role of the physical arts (1) Physical art is a tool to connect all artistic activities so that drama becomes a general art (2) Physical art is a tool to training, completing each form of language and combining them together First: Using physical art to implement body language Second: Using physical art - expressing psychological expression Third: Using physical art to implement signal language Fourth: Using physical art to perfect spoken language Fifth: Using physical art to perfect written language (3) Practically, all forms of language used by humans are contained within each other; accomplishing each form or linking together is done through physical activitieves There is nothing better than using physical activity to balance, adjust, and combine all forms of language Sub-conclusion of chapter Physical art is formed from the need to develop, people want to complete all activities to fulfill all purposes Created from physical activity, physical art has two basic functions: a perfect tool for performing actions and a means of powerfully conveying messages Along with instinctive action, the conscious action is associated with human life; Physical art activities are closely linked with human's creation and successes; all blend into a whole that reflects the reality of human life - the object that needs to be reflected in Vietnamese drama Reflecting the reality of life is the top goal and task of Vietnamese drama artists Depicting the core details of all things and phenomena through the human's activities - the characters with specific situations is the direct task of the actors under the guidance of the director With the prominent function of physical art, artists, actors use it as the basic and primary means to effectively perform the synthetic theatrical activities and successfully build up the artistic image for plays Chapter EXPLOITING THE USE OF PHYSICAL ART OF THE ARTISTS ON THE STAGE OF VIETNAMESE DRAMA 2.1 Artists exploit the use of physical art as a means to artistic creativity 2.1.1 Artists exploit the actor's physical art to process the space of the play The stage - the playground is always a sanctum for Kings and Queens! Making the sanctum beautiful is a very important thing, the sanctum should be created with many shimmering colors In order to match each performance with aesthetic concepts, the creative ability of each artist will choose to process space with two basic trends: realistic and symbolic depict Basing on the specific space, actors exploit the corresponding physical art to practice performance Actors use physical art activities to express their attitudes and behavior towards objects (both concrete and non-vegetal) prescribed by the dramatic situation, which also directly contribute to the spatial processing When staging the play Dong song am anh for Hai Phong Drama Troupe (1985), Doan Anh Thang has processed the space according to conventional methods: only the plank is in the middle of the stage, one end can be pulled up and down According to this scene, the actor exploited the physical activities that have already happened in life with conventional stylized methods, leveling up to physical art with better details than reality to communicate, behave, show attitude to the plank, hanging rope the actor took the audience with him into the fantasy of different drama contexts and situations: Sometimes, it is the tunnel collapsed; sometimes is the moving boat; sometimes in this place, and later in another place, sometimes near the shore, sometimes in the middle of the sea Vietnamese drama has been performed by many artists 2.1.2 Artist exploit the use of actor's physical art to express an impressive highlight for the play Physical art leaves a clear image; the artists clearly see this advantage, therefore, they use physical art to highlight the performance When staging the play Am muu va tinh yeu for the Central Drama company; the director Dinh Nghi has minimized the dialogue, the message was replaced by the language of physical art, he directed the actor to use conventional body details, combining sound and lighting effects with the physical movement of objects… creating an impressive highlight: “the cross was suddenly lowered from the top of the stage, Louise knelt down to swear to God, a streak of light shone on Ferdinang's raised arm like a despair” [15, p 68] The fact that applying the physical art of traditional theater to create and highlight the play cannot help failing to mention to The People's Artist, director Xuan Huyen In the play Othello staged for Nghe An Drama Troupe, to create a highlight for the play, Othello realizes that Desdemona has betrayed (being tricked by Iago); to express his extreme disappointment at losing trust, the director has asked the actor who plays the role of Othello to perform a 'falling down' action using the (superior) technique of the physical art of Tuong, the image left an mpressive highlight in the hearts of the audience There are also many directors and crews who have used physical art to highlight the play with many different forms and styles Director and actors choose the right time, actors exploit the unique physical details, depict the core value of the phenomenon; deligently train, well-executed, sharp and powerful all those become the perfect tool, actors' effective practice creates an impressive highlight that has a strong impact on the audience 2.1.3 Artists exploit the use of the actors' physical art to express implicit words to tell the drama story The story is written by the author in words, the director creates a story-telling style in the form of a mizangxen organization combining with synthetic artistic activities and actors tell the story of life by the art of action Details of physical art itself describe the core value of things and phenomena, reacting to the essence of reality In life as well as on the stage, many people characters, say things in implication or say something in one way but it in other way or have somthing that cannot be said In the play by Schiller' Am muu tinh yeu (Germany) for the Central Drama Troupe, director Nguyen Dinh Nghi guides the actors to use physical art combined with the art of speech, to attract the audience to understand the truth of events, phenomena, and the true nature of the characters In the scene: Ferdinang (The Anh) learns that he was forced to marry Minfo (My Dung) Ferdinang was very angry when he went to see Minfo, through a fierce confrontation, he realized that Minfo loved him very much The director Nguyen Dinh Nghi has directed actors to act with details of physical art Through the physical art language of the actors, audience can see between the dialogues and the non-verbal actions of two opposite characters, so it attracts the audience's attention The actors The Anh and My Dung have exploited and used the physical art with great success, many core-valued physical details show the hidden message in this scene, highlighting the essence of the matter Through physical art activities of actors, the story is fully conveyed by the authors, making the audience pay close attention to every detail of the character's activities; a compelling drama needs a narration with much implication 2.1.4 Artists exploit the use of physical art of the actors to manage - handle dramatic conflicts In Vietnamese drama, dramatic conflict is a real social problem that needs to be resolved; it is also the basic art element of the play With the talent of using theatrical techniques, artists, directors and actors have processed it The attitude of (character - actor) can make the conflict rise and fall, it can also be changed or reversed; To express a character's attitude, no form of language can convey the message more accurately than physical art (expressing attitudes) For example, in the play Doi den mua Xuan, director Duy Anh staged for the Youth Theater, exploiting the actor's physical art activities on the basis of modern dance The conflict is pushed up in the situation; Teacher Nhung (Thu Quynh) appeared, rushed into the lair where her student was The teacher's gentleness and tenderness in front of the chaotic scene of different genders on the exciting music and modern dance background (reflecting contemporary life occuring in a lair with drug addictors are struggling with cravings for drug ) The actress Thu Quynh with typical, strong, tough behavior and gestures, showing her bravery, not being afraid of evil, ready to fight against evil, has awakened her student - the conflict was pushed forward again – helping the student to look back, realize, regain his belief and return to his upright, resilient nature, standing up and ready to protect the rightness of life Physical art activities were meticulously practiced, performed smoothly and accurately, coordinated with rhythmic action juggling, and accurately performed, creating an attractive scene for the audience by actors 2.1.5 Artists exploit the use of the actor's physical art to depict the essential core values of the character Actors who use physical art activities as a tool to perform synthetic theatrical activities to build up character images will certainly portray core values and fully reflect character's nature The People's Artist Dao Mong Long is an actor who left his imprint in exploiting and using physical art to build character art images; In the first role, Dao Mong Long has made an impression on how to explore and exploit the details of physical art activities while playing the role of Xi A in the play Liu Ba, of the Central drama Company, which was staged by V.Vaxiliep Analyzing the use of action, Prof Dr Dinh Quang stated that actor Dao Mong Long has exploited physical activities, creating the character Xi A to appear "in front of everyone's eyes Xi A as a sleepy, slow and good manned man, adding to it is a song that is not rhythmic, hums frequently, a song that the singer does not need to think about, and does not attract anyone's attention, and the slow, sad song covers the owl's eyes, pretending to be dim with the ears erecting around to find an opportunity to act Behind everyone, Xi A completely changed, as fast as a cat stalking prey to meet an opportunity Mong Long let Xi A speak in a hoarse voice, evoking a ghostly feeling, the whispering voice plus the faltering gait seemed like a ghost accustomed to doing business in the gloom and darkness of the cathedral” [43, p 209] Dao Mong Long used physical art in performing to express the "stealth essence of Xi A" “Mong Long used an arc or zigzag path when moving on stage to evoke an unsettled feeling, that seemed to be a slow crawling venomous snake! Seeing Xi A walk, but we can't guess which way he intended to move because he crooked before coming towards us Mong Long only walked on his knees, the upper half of his legs did not likely move- we didn't know when he came, or when he left his body seemed to be in the same place but his feet were already far back he took the laziness at the top to hide the slyness below… In terms of upper body movements, Mong Long often used the position of crossing his arms in front of his chest like a monk When he was grabbed by the sailor, Mong Long let Xia spread his arms as if he were Jesus crucified, when being pushed, Mong Long fell down like a fallen cross." [43, p 210] 2.1.6 Artists exploit the use of the actor's physical art as a creative medium to portray the complex psychological life Physical activities associated with human life fully express all aspects of that person's psychological life Actors use everyday physical art with sharp expressive details, showing colorful expressions that depict reality with the characters' psychological developments In the play Hon Truong Ba, The People's Artist Trong Khoi has used a series of details of the model roles in traditional art, applying in acting practice to solve the internal conflicts that are often interwoven between the souls of the two characters in one body In the episode when being assigned by Village Mayor to help the butcher's wife during the day, Truong Ba's soul in the body of Mr Hoi - the butcher's crude instinctive reaction was adjusted less crudely by Mr Truong Ba's soul which was performed very subtly by Trong Khoi, convincing the audience with physical art activities (the mouth, the tongue licking and coveting the breasts of the butcher's wife, Trong Khoi has exploited in great detail, the physical art of his hands, to effectively used the hand slapping the butt, one hand grasped the other hand, this hand slapped that hand to prevent the act of grabbing the breast every gesture has disturbed the butcher's wife's soul In another episode, Mr Truong Ba entered the butcher's body, lived in the house with his wife, son, daughter-in-law, grandson, but his life was turned upside down and could not exist peacefully because of the spirit with the personality of courteous, calm, gentle gestures entering the bulky body that consumes rice, alcohol, the butcher's natural instincts that always arose, prompted the rude acts as patting his wife's butt, yelled at his son and especially hit him when he told the truth - the behavior that he never had before The physical system to express the psychology of two characters existing in one body with different personalities is expressed in detail, coherent, intertwined by Trong Khoi, and the cross between the vulgar and ordinary body of Mr Hoi there are many rude instinctive behaviors that always overwhelm Mr Truong Ba's soul; correctly portray the core value of the lack of synchronization; there cannot exist the type of "A square peg in a round hole", one person's soul is in the other's body; an unacceptable tragedy – death is better than living [A.7, PL] 2.1.7 Artist exploit the use of the actor's physical art to bring out the character's personality Each person's personality is associated with age, health, habits and habits through details of physical activities Actors need to use physical art to practice acting that will clearly portray the character's personality Many Vietnamese drama artists have done this very well! In the play "Cat trang nhu gao", the author and director Nguyen Quang Vinh alone acted into three female characters, the People's Artist Hoang Yen strived to learn, research and exploit the system of physical movements applied to the roles: Sau Hue appeared as a sincere peasant woman, steadfast in all the ups and downs period of brining up her children, waiting for the man of her life; only a few minutes Hoang Yen quickly escaped from Sau Hue to transform into a female police officer with full symbolism with a harsh, tough appearance; The audience can see that this is a kind, tolerant woman when Hoang Yen uses simple gestures and movements in everyday life Moments later, Hoang Yen returned to the role of Linh, a young, mischievous, stubborn girl named "hyacinth Linh " With the ability to exploit the use of detailed, fluent and skillful physical art language, Hoang Yen demonstrated the ability to use physical art activities in depicting the unique personality of each character in different ages Hoang Yen was very careful in the use of makeup and costumes for each character and paid great attention to the use of physical art to perfect the art of speaking, using the operation of the mouth and tongue muscles, and the mechanical movements of the mouth cavity to adjust the voice and way of speaking for characters of different ages to match each character's voice, phonetics, with distinct regional characteristics [A.8, PL] 2.2 Artists exploit and use physical art to create artistic methods for staging 2.2.1 Inheriting the exploitation and the use of physical art of Vietnamese traditional theatre Traditional Vietnamese theatre has a rich physical art system; physical movements are stylized with clear expression of the core values of the nature of phenomena that have been coded into clusters and performed according to the procedure, has been creatively applied by Vietnamese drama artists in staging plays Typically, are: Nguyen Dinh Nghi, Xuan Huyen, Doan Anh Thang… they use this as artistic technique to process the set of the stage Recently, meritorious artist Tran Luc has inherited the quintessence of the physical art of traditional theatre and created a creative method of "conventional expression" to stage plays Starting his own staging style by staging the play Quan by the author Long Chuong With a new style and perspective; Tran Luc tells a story about Dai Cat family - a bourgeois family, before the State's public-private partnership policy Fearing that the accumulated wealth would be lost, Mr and Mrs Dai Cat tried to find ways to hide and disperse it The story takes place with complicated psychological developments All are reflected from the perspective of contemporary people with the intention of exploiting physical language, many lines have been cut, replaced with physical language, expressing attitudes to the objects in the play, creating a new look for the play With the tendency of using the physical art of traditional theater, Tran Luc and LucTeam created a series of plays with the same composition method: Con ghen Lo Lem, Ca si hoi dau, Bach Dan lieu 2.2.2 Acquiring the exploitation and the use of the physical art of the quintessential plays of different countries Vietnamese Drama is a synthetic art; itself is formed from the acculturation of eastern and western culture; Acceptance, interchange for the development is very necessary and needs to be promoted In the process of international cooperation, there has been an artistic activity to build a play with a method of exploiting physical art as a basic language, receiving the quintessence of drama and applying it creatively to stage a Vietnamese play When staging the play Su song for the Vietnam Drama Theater, Munesigige (Japan) told the story of Vach nui dating back 600 years ago, told by the director: A filial boy joins a religious group with a great monk going up the mountain to pray for his mother who is seriously ill Exploiting art to handle all problems for the play to depict the reality of life is the staging style of the director and the creative team to create a very interesting play 2.3 Tendency of exploitation and use of physical art 2.3.1 Artists exploit and use physical art according to many different tendencies to create diversity Physical art associated with real life; with the preeminent features the artists used to build the play; there are two basic tendencies exploiting the use of physical art: (1) Symbolizing, stylizing, convention according to the tendency of traditional theater with some representatives: Dinh Nghi, Xuan Huyen, Doan Anh Thang ; Pham Thi Thanh, Le Hung, Lan Huong, Bich Ngoc who have inherited the artistic achievements of contemporary mime, dance, and physical drama (2) Realistically depicting the realistic details - Most of the artists trained under the Stanislavski generation used physical art in this tendency Depending on the point of view as well as the ability of each artist to exploit using in his own way with different tendencies, each play applies a specific way to create diversity 2.3.2 Exploiting the use of physical art to define the genre Physical art always plays a central role, artists use it as a tool to perfect the connection of language forms; the usage leads to different forms of performance Defining theatrical genre bases on a combination of linguistic forms, accompanied by a performance procedure set up with aesthetic principles established by people according to subjective intentions and supported and received as a spiritual food in accordance with the viewer's interest to create the genre Comedy makes fun for audience, actors use physical art with exaggerated details, contrary to everyday life, causing humor and satire; even the execution of speech - using the art of the mouth, tongue, belly to create breath and unusual voices - aims at making fun The play with the tragic genre aims to make the audience sympathize with the character's suffering situation, making the audience deeply touching Performing in a tragic play, actors need to accurately use core-valued details to portray extreme pain so that the audience can empathize To this, the artists who build the play need to use the actors' physical language to effectively tell the story In the play Cat bui, author Trieu Huan, director Xuan Huyen staged for Hanoi Opera House, at the stage Ca Khoa (Hoang Dung) asked Thuc Dai (Tien Dat) to confess his sins so that he can write a worship letter to ask for forgiveness from heaven and earth Tong Thoai (Trung Hieu) saw Thuc Dai's confess letter and immediately thought of using it to blackmail to fulfill his ambition to change the life of a poor writer Knowing that plot, Ca Khoa told all the past stories, in order to prevent Tong Thoai's plot, however, Tong Thoai did not follow, but even persuaded him and showed his plot with a fierce attitude Ca Khoa was disappointed with his son, in excruciating pain, he grabbed Tong Thoai's neck and pulled him back, then looked directly at the proud face with a smiling mouth and eyes Ca Khoa indignantly pushed Tong Thoai away, he himself was also pushed back, struggling to find a place to hold on, but only clinging to the thin, rough cloth next to him The complex psychological activity of the character is increased from using many valuable details of the physical art by the actors to perform combined with the movement of the moving curtain and colorful light creates wobble the creative team created a play with many tragedies interwoven with the ending in which Thuc Dai must face the death [A.12, PL] In fact, the physical art is very important, but only developing the physical art without using spoken language, the play will not be a drama, transforming into another type of theater For example: In Co be ban diem, the non-dialogue play staged by director Le Hung basing on the content of Andersen's story, the actor used physical language with contemporary dance, robot movements, pantomime, etc with other elements that perform the action for the character The play still fully reflects the reality of life in Khach san thien duong, the play without words, the creative team only uses physical art with a realistic tendency, combining with sound, music and light to perform, which still gave out an impressive performance and the full realistic message Bipolar, a play directed by Michael Vogel for Familie Flöz, appearing on the Vietnamese stage (2016) Bipolar was staged and performed with a different style: Language forms (except spoken language) were reasonably mingling in the play, turning into a synthetic, theatrical language that reflects the real life Sub-conclusion of chapter The new concept of physical art appears in this thesis; actually always accompanies by creative artists Each artist has his own perspective, ability to perceive and perform, so applying them to creativity to build plays is also unique Some artists use physical art as a tool to perform artistic technique, process the set of the stage according to creative ideas - space, highlight, conflict Some artists use physical art as staging method based on a system of aesthetic principles - defining Exploiting the use of physical art has many ways with different tendencies; Reality shows that artists who fully, detailly exploit, seriously train and work hard to accumulate a physical art system that is big in quantity, stronng in quality, and professional use brings about good results in creativity Chapter DISCUSSION AND TENDENCIES 3.1 Discussion 3.1.1 It needs to have a new approach to physical art When Vietnamese drama appeared, "voice" was very important and it was considered as the basic language To complete, develop the art of speaking – it needs go along with the speaker's attitude and perform the act of speaking to reflect the reality of life It is understood that physical activity is the only tool to perform all actions including speaking In order to perform all actions well; display physical activities - the perfect tool to effectively give performance on the stage, an artist needs to perfect physical activities with the criteria of serving the audience Artists need to consider physical art as the basic language for theatricalization so that it becomes a synthetic theatrical physical art activity with strong creativity in acting to build artistic image 3.1.2 Storytelling method with physical language Idea - Based on famous fairy tales of Vietnam: Tam Cam, Cay tre tram dot, Da trang xe cat Exploiting and using physical art with the trend favored by the group of authors to build up plays, or using a good story in life or Nguyen Du's masterpiece poems in combination with the quintessential physical art language of a physical art so that the creative team finds it suitable to build up a Vietnamese play Solution - The director and the creative team can rely on the group's artistic ideas that have been identified with aesthetic principles or inherit quintessential achievements from other arts (containing many physical elements) to build up a Vietnamese play, Munesige (Japan) tells the story of Vach nui dating back 600 years in physical language is an example Expanding and exploiting the use of physical art activities to create many compositional tendencies for directors and actors Using physical art as the best creative tool, physical art develops diversifiedly and multi-dimenssionally, readily and quickly changing to fit its constituent elements Artists who need to non-stop practice and have a clear direction will tend to create a unique style for the author group 3.2 The tendency of exploiting and using effectively the physical art 3.2.1 Objective reality is always changing Real life manifests itself in four basic states summarized by UNESCO: resources, material, mechanisms, and consciousness-thoughts Reality is always changing, becoming more and more complicated and unpredictable because of needs and plans, with the lack of understanding and desire to conquer Besides, the development creats more materials to satisfy increased needs, accompanied by many unpredictable climate changes, the devastating destruction of nature the new attitudes and actions arising are objective realities that need to be updated by the artist to reflect in the play Reality with changes, beside the developments are climate changes, many unusual disasters that bring a lot of devastation, all of which give out many new physical activities; Artists need to update the reality of life, grasp to learn, reproduce, and renew to have a new image that is suitable to the reality of life to build an artistic image that reflects the reality of life 3.2.2 It needs to have a complete phisical art system Practicing transformation exercises - In order to have a physical art system big in terms of quantity and and strong in quality, artists need to set up many action details that depict the nature of things and phenomena by transformation exercises: transfering adjectives on paper into practical action details that express the core value of things and phenomena Establishing and perfecting the system of physical art - Sophisticated training with specific and professional purposes; classifying and then arranging into a physical art system big in quantity and quality, as well as a professional practice Raising up awareness and practicing skills - It is necessary to raise up awareness about physical art activities, master the basic content of physical art and flexible transformations along with the constituent elements to apply effective creativity Some skills that artists need to practise to creatively and effectively apply: skills of observation, imagination, role-playing, flexible practice, creativity, sublimation and professionalism to effectively use of physical art in acting to build up an image for the play 3.2.3 The tendency of expanding the development of physical art Aiming at fully reflecting objective reality, artists need to constantly update, carefully study, train hard, and accumulate enough, especially professional practice Directors and actors need to use physical art as a basic language to connect other language forms into a language of synthetic stage art with practice and creativity, along with many tendencies to create many good plays that help Vietnamese theater diversifiedly develop to serve audiences of many different backgrounds Sub-conclusion of chapter Actors perfect physical activities in many ways, many tendencies to achieve diverse physical art, the perfect tool that directly implements the smallest details depicting the core values that always play the central role to complete and connect all artistic activities;
