B6 Nov 14, 2012 | www.kentuckynewera.com www.kentuckynewera.com | Nov 14, 2012 Kentucky New Era - Rotary Regional Academic All-Star Team High School Winners & Judges Nov - High School Foreign Language Nominees Nov - High School Journalism Nominees Nov - High School Mathematics Nominees Nov - High School Science Nominees Nov 10 - High School Social Studies/Economics Nominees Nov 12 - All High School Nominees Nov 14 - High School Winners Announced & the Judges CAREER & TECHNICAL JOURNALISM ENGLISH Zachary, the son of Steve and Marla Adams, Princeton, is a student at Caldwell County High School Adams competed in the Math discipline part of the Regional Academic All-Star team He was nominated by David Shaffer Ian, the son of Michael Brown and Sara Brown, Princeton, is a student at Caldwell County High School Brown competed in the Career & Technical discipline part of the Regional Academic All-Star team He was nominated by Kim Farmer Elizabeth, the daughter of Connie and John Johnson, Gracey, is a student at Trigg County High School Johnson competed in the Journalism discipline part of the Regional Academic All-Star team She was nominated by Christy Ethridge Gordon, the son of Dr Mitchell and Sally Kaye, Hopkinsville, is a student at University Heights Academy Kaye competed in the English discipline part of the Regional Academic All-Star team He was nominated by Faye Hendricks Adams plans to attend the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland He intends to study Chemical Engineering His goal is to become a chemical engineer and work in pharmaceutical or medicine manufacturing “Ian is a very academically sound student,” said Farmer “He is a very outstanding young man, well known in the community and well respected.” IAN BROWN SOCIAL STUDIES/ECONOMICS Aubree, the daughter of Shannon and Christina Burcham, Cadiz, is a student at Trigg County High School Burcham competed in the Science discipline part of the Regional Academic All-Star team She was nominated by Kim Adams Conner, the son of Eric and Leigh Anne Collins, Hopkinsville, is a student at Heritage Christian Academy Collins competed in the Social Studies/Economics discipline part of the Regional Academic All-Star team He was nominated by Dennis Windsor “Conner’s academic performance has been exemplary,” said Windsor “He demonstrates excellence in his classes and his community.” CONNER COLLINS GORDON KAYE Cynthia Atkins serves as the Director of Library Services at Hopkinsville Community College She holds degrees from Hopkinsville Community College, the University of Kentucky, George Peabody College, and Western Kentucky University She is married to Mike Atkins, a teacher and part-time pastor CYNTHIA ATKINS Collins plans to attend the University of Louisville J.B Speed School of Engineering He will pursue a master’s degree in either Chemical or Civil Engineering Slone Cansler graduated from Murray state university with bachelors and matters degrees Hopkinsville Nick Cansler and they have two children SLONE CANSLER Scott Gordon currently serves as the Director of Admissions at Western Kentucky University He University of Kentucky Lesley, the daughter of Joe and Linda Goodaker, Princeton, is a student at Caldwell County High School Goodaker competed in the Foreign Language discipline part of the Regional Academic All-Star team She was nominated by Ken Cummins Andrea, the daughter of Andrew and Melissa Gray, Hopkinsville, is a student at Christian County High School Gray competed in the Arts discipline part of the Regional Academic All- Star team She was nominated by James Gregory LESLEY GOODAKER Goodaker plans to attend Austin Peay State University in the fall She plans to major in Criminal Justice with a concentration in Homeland Security, with a minor in Spanish as a foreign language Her ultimate goal is to pursue a career as a Crisis Negotiator Education is not received it’s achieved Congratulations! Christian County Public Schools SCOTT GORDON ANDREA GRAY Honoring the academics of our local students Caldwell County Public Schools Gray is undecided which college she will attend However, she plans to attend college to pursue a major in Music and a minor in Special Education Her goal is to obtain a Music Therapy degree so that she may incorporate music into teaching life lessons to children who have been diagnosed with a disability Way to go Academic All-Stars! BETH MEADE Geneva Taylor became a part of the Western Kentucky University family in 2007 Since coming to WKU, she has worked in the Office of Admissions with the Academic Transitions Program, helping students transition from high school into their first semester at WKU Geneva was also instrumental in creating the online transfer orientation and ATP On the Road programs “Andrea demonstrates a high level of character and perseverance at Christian County High School,” Gregory said “She is a very dependable and reliable student.” Regional Campus She is married to State University and the ARTS mass director of the Murray State has previously worked in FOREIGN LANGUAGE in communications She is the admissions offices at Murray “Lesley is a leader, organizer and motivator,” said Cummins “She is a self-starter and completes any assignment tough or easy all the way through Lesley relates well to other students and teachers.” Although Kaye is undecided on which college he will attend, he plans to major in either Biomedical Engineering or Biochemistry with a minor in political science His ultimate goal is to have a career as a surgeon ELIZABETH JOHNSON SCIENCE Burcham plans to attend the University of Louisville to major in Nursing Her goal is to become a Family Nurse Practitioner “Gordon loves to challenge himself, is naturally curious, and highly motivated,” said Hendricks “He is intrinsically motivated, very bright and has a great work ethic He is punctual and conscientious in all his efforts.” “Elizabeth is a well-rounded student who is also very involved in numerous extra-curricular activities,” said Ethridge “She is a very strong student in all areas.” Brown is currently undecided which college he will attend His ultimate goal is to become an engineer “Aubree embodies true leadership qualities; intelligence and hard work that will ensure her success in college,” said Adams “She possesses not only a truly academic mind, but she displays many skills such as leadership, hard work, perseverance and compassion that will make her valuable asset to the community.” AUBREE BURCHAM Oct 26 - Middle School 8th Grade English Students Oct 27 - Middle School 8th Grade Mathematics Students Oct 29 - Middle School 8th Grade Science Students Oct 31 - Middle School 8th Grade Social Studies Students Nov - High School Art Nominees Nov - High School Career/Technical Nominees Nov - High School English Nominees MATHEMATICS “Zach is a great team player,” said Shaffer “He is mature, hard-working, attentive, and possesses excellent leadership qualities.” ZACHARY ADAMS Academic All-Stars Publication Schedule GENEVA TAYLOR BEVERLY FORT Beth Meade currently is a Simulation Lab Coordinator at Hopkinsville Community College She graduated in 1988 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville I served in the United States Air Force for the next eight years having had the opportunity to experience many kinds of nursing to include medical-surgical, intensive care, and labor and delivery Upon completion of my military service, my husband and I moved our family to Hopkinsville, Kentucky For the past five years, I have worked in different roles at Hopkinsville Community College as a Nursing Instructor, a Lab Instructional Specialist, and most recently, a Simulation Lab Coordinator I have the best job ever as I am able to closely interact with all of our nursing students! I also have the added benefit of being able to attend graduate school part-time while I work full-time MELONY SHEMBERGER We salute our top achievers! ALISSA YOUNG The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it away from you Todd County Schools Propulsys Education is key to future success Melony Shemberger is the assistant director of communication in the public relations and marketing office at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tenn She handles external and internal communication for the University, writes press releases, edits publications, coordinates publicity efforts and other tasks designed to advance APSU in recruitment, retention and giving She serves as president of the University’s Staff Senate and assists on numerous committees throughout campus, including The Peay Read annual reading effort and the Homecoming Scholarship 5K Alissa Young is a native of Hopkinsville, KY She graduated from Christian County High School in 1985 and went on to attend Murray State University to pursue a degree in Communication She graduated from Murray State University in 1989 with her Bachelor's Degree in Radio-TV Broadcasting and in 1993 with her Master's Degree in the field of O r g a n i z a t i o n a l Communication Young serves as Dean of Academic Affairs at Hopkinsville Community College and is also a Professor of Communications Janet Velazquez has been an Admissions Counselor at Austin Peay State University for over five years Her primary focuses at APSU are Kentucky counties and non-traditional students She has held previous positions in private, state and federal agencies as a Career Counselor, Parent Educator, Alcohol & Drug Prevention Specialist, as well as other social service fields A graduate of APSU, Velazquez is married to an active duty US Army service member and they have two beautiful daughters JANET VELAZQUEZ Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world Congratulations All-Stars!
