OVERVIEW OF THE STUDY

Rationale of the study

The use of English has been gradually increasing in Vietnam English is introduced to the educational curriculum from primary education (optional) to high school education (compulsory)

The traditional method of learning was attending a face-to-face class.

In recent years, online learning has emerged as a leading method for studying English, offering a modern alternative to traditional face-to-face classes This innovative form of distance education has significantly transformed the learning landscape over the past decade, with its popularity continuing to grow This study aims to investigate the experiences of online learners as they navigate this evolving educational approach.

Topica Edtech Group, through its product Topica Native, pioneered online English learning by developing its own proprietary system, setting it apart from other educational organizations in Vietnam that relied on third-party applications like Skype, Messenger, and Google Hangouts for their classes This innovative approach allowed Topica Native to swiftly address and rectify issues that arose in those external platforms, enhancing the overall learning experience for students.

Topica Native has identified several discrepancies that significantly impact the quality of English language learning Additionally, learners continue to express dissatisfaction with the online learning approach due to unresolved technological issues.

The above mentioned situation has urged me to conduct a study to investigate learners’ difficulties in learning English online at Topica Edtech Group As a result,

I have decided to carry out a research into “The reality of learning English online of learners at Topica Edtech Group”.

Previous studies

There were a lot of research about learning online and difficulties in learning online (from teachers’ viewpoint, from students’ viewpoint and from other objective factors) in the world.

In the world, there were some famous research of some authors and linguists which can be mentioned such as :

Sangeeta Kakoty in “E-learning as a Research Area: An Analytical Approach”

According to Ambient Insight, LLC (January 2011), online learning encompasses education delivered through various technologies in a distance format While e-learning and distance education are often used interchangeably, the key distinction lies in the separation from a traditional classroom setting in distance education Research in distance education plays a crucial role in enhancing e-learning practices, yet it has faced consistent critique for being overly theoretical and descriptive Richter highlights the absence of a validated meta-structure of research topics in distance education, suggesting the need for a comprehensive framework to better organize and advance knowledge in this field.

Online learning, as defined by Clark and Mayer (2016), refers to instruction delivered through digital devices like computers and smartphones to facilitate learning This e-learning occurs in various formats, including speech, text, images, and multimedia elements such as videos and animations Notably, asynchronous e-learning remains the most common type, allowing learners to study at their own pace and focus on individual learning experiences.

In addition to the aforementioned studies, I will incorporate additional research throughout my work to enhance the content and provide a deeper, clearer understanding of the topic.

Aims of the study

This study aimed to investigate the online English learning experiences of 500 diverse learners, varying in age, gender, proficiency levels, and careers It focuses on developing optimized online English learning models for Topica Edtech Group to enhance learners' absorption of the language The research findings will provide practical recommendations to improve the effectiveness of online English classes.

Research subjects

This study focused on a group of 500 learners at Topica Native, primarily aged between 25 and 30 years The demographic breakdown revealed that 54% of the participants were male, while 46% were female Notably, some learners had been studying English offline for over three years.

A study conducted at Topica Native involved a questionnaire for learners to assess their attitudes towards learning English, identify challenges they faced in online English absorption and practice, and gather suggested solutions for improving their experience with the platform.

The survey questionnaire was administered to 500 students including seven questions with an aim to get information about learners’ opinions on and students’ desires in learning English with different levels.

Scope of the study

Beside a lot of related issues that affected to the quality of learning English online at Topica Native, I have chosen to focus on the reality of learning English.

Also, due to the time constraints, this study only involves a small number of learners at Topica Edtech Group.

Research methodology

The main method of the study was quantitative survey questionnaire, which was designed and distributed to the learners

In consideration of the research’s purposes, this study was done in the light of both quantitative research in which the data were collected by forms of questionnaires of learners.

Survey questionnaires are highly effective tools for data collection in social science research According to Gillham (2000), their advantages include reduced pressure on respondents, minimized bias, and straightforward analysis of responses.

Organization of the study

The study consists of four chapters:

The first chapter, titled "Overview of the Study," outlines the rationale behind the research, detailing the objectives, previous studies, research methodologies, and the scope and design of the investigation.

Chapter Two of the Literature Review establishes the theoretical foundation for the thesis, focusing on three key areas Firstly, it examines the overall perspective on online English learning Secondly, it evaluates the benefits and drawbacks associated with this mode of learning Lastly, it highlights the distinctive features of online learning methodologies.

Chapter three, Research findings, presented answers for research questions related to the reality, difficulties of learning online at Topica A detailed data analyze and discussions were also given.

The last chapter, Recommendations and Suggestions, gave suggested solutions, the summary and a recommendation for further studies

This chapter aimed to explore a general view on the theory of learning English online, a quick new method.

Definitions of learning English online

Learning English was the activity or process of gaining knowledge or skill by studying, practicing, being taught, or experiencing and understanding English.

People learn English often by reading, writing, speaking, and listening or usually known as four skills of English

Online learning, commonly known as "elearning," is a form of education conducted over the Internet It falls under the broader category of "distance learning," which encompasses various methods of education that occur outside of traditional classroom settings.

Learning English online typically involves utilizing various websites and online platforms Numerous community forums, like Englishforums, provide a space for individuals to connect and enhance their English skills These forums facilitate quick responses to questions, often with assistance from volunteer teachers from around the globe.

According to Stacey, E., Smith, P J., & Barty, K (2004), distance learning has a long history and there were several types available today, including:

Correspondence courses involve minimal interaction and are conducted through traditional mail, while telecourses deliver content via radio or television broadcasts CD-ROM courses allow students to engage with static computer content, whereas online learning encompasses Internet-based courses that can be taken either synchronously or asynchronously Finally, mobile learning utilizes devices like cell phones, PDAs, and digital audio players, such as iPods and MP3 players, to facilitate education on the go.

Online learning refers to education delivered through distance methods using various technologies While e-learning and distance education are distinct concepts, they share similarities; the main difference lies in the environment, with distance education removing students from a traditional classroom setting, whereas e-learning allows for a more integrated learning experience.

Research in distance education plays a crucial role in enhancing the e-learning process, despite facing ongoing critiques that label it as "theoretical and predominantly descriptive." Richter highlights the absence of a validated meta-structure for research topics in this field, which hinders the organization of knowledge and the identification of gaps and priority areas for future research Establishing a clear research framework is essential for advancing the discipline and addressing its challenges effectively.

Previous research has explored the relationship between learning experiences and academic performance in online learning settings characterized by varying degrees of media naturalness Findings indicate that while online technologies hold promise for fostering effective and meaningful learning, their advantages over traditional face-to-face learning environments remain inconclusive.

Advantages and disadvantages of learning English online

Online distance learning English met needs of an ever-growing population of students who could not or prefer not to participate in traditional classroom settings.

Learners who benefit from alternative education methods often include individuals unable to attend traditional classes, those unable to find specific courses at their preferred institutions, residents of remote areas, full-time workers studying after hours, and those who favor independent learning.

According to Paulus, T., & Scherff, L (2008), online learning English was a growing trend in the learning industry and these was some advantages

Learning English online is more affordable, as users can access courses from any internet-connected device This eliminates the need for costly expenses associated with traditional face-to-face classes, such as renting physical spaces and covering utility bills.

The shift to online learning significantly reduced time spent on commuting for both teachers and students, allowing for greater efficiency Instructors could prepare course materials just once and share them with multiple student groups, streamlining the educational process.

Online English courses enable self-paced learning, allowing students and trainees to access their lessons anytime and anywhere using their personal devices This flexibility is especially beneficial for those with busy schedules, as they can study at their convenience, making it easier to fit language learning into their lives.

In today's digital age, the majority of individuals favor consuming content online over traditional methods, as evidenced by your current reading of this article This shift encompasses various activities, including staying informed about the latest news and enjoying multimedia entertainment.

TV, talking to friends, booking appointments, shopping and the list goes on

According to the reasearch of Wilson, M (1999), he pointed out other advantages of learning online:

Higher education today provides a diverse array of programs and courses, catering to students' varying interests and needs Whether attending a traditional four-year university or an entirely online career college, learners can pursue fields ranging from nursing to neuroscience This flexibility allows students to access a comprehensive range of academic degrees online, including career certificates, associate degrees, bachelor's degrees, and even doctorates.

Online programs often present a more cost-effective alternative to traditional colleges While the net tuition for online degrees may not always be lower, the overall associated costs tend to be significantly reduced, making them an attractive option for budget-conscious students.

Online education eliminates commuting costs and often provides free access to course materials, such as textbooks Many colleges and universities now recognize credits earned through massive open online courses (MOOCs), allowing students to meet general education requirements at minimal or no expense.

Online education offers a more comfortable learning environment by eliminating the need for physical class sessions Students can access lectures and materials electronically, allowing them to study at their own pace This flexibility means they can avoid traffic, secure parking, and manage their time better, enabling them to balance work and family commitments without sacrificing their education.

Convenience and flexibility: Online courses give students the opportunity to plan their study time around the rest of their day, instead of the other way around.

Online learning offers students the flexibility to study and work during their peak energy hours, whether that’s in the early morning or late at night With course materials readily available online, there’s no need for time-consuming trips to the library This accessibility makes online education an ideal choice for students juggling work and family responsibilities.

Online courses enhance student interaction and concentration, particularly for shy individuals who may find it easier to engage in discussions and chats in a virtual setting compared to traditional classrooms Many students have noted that the online environment allows for improved focus, as they are less distracted by peers and classroom activities.

Online courses and degree programs offer students the flexibility to advance their careers while managing work, job transitions, or family responsibilities Engaging in academic pursuits during these times can effectively address any gaps in a resume Additionally, obtaining a degree demonstrates ambition and a commitment to staying informed and ready for new challenges, making candidates more appealing to prospective employers.

Many individuals pursuing a degree do not intend to leave their current jobs, as the rising costs of college necessitate that they maintain employment while studying.

The previously mentioned flexibility of online degree programs enable students to keep working while also pursuing academic credentials.

During severe weather events like snowstorms and thunderstorms, colleges may cancel classes, but if they don't, commuting can pose significant risks Online courses offer a safer alternative, allowing students to engage in discussions, submit assignments, and access lectures without the need for travel Additionally, students can save considerably on fuel costs by opting for online education, regardless of the weather conditions.

Enhancing your technical skills is essential, as even introductory online courses necessitate proficiency in various learning management systems (LMS) and software The competencies gained from engaging in online learning—such as document creation and sharing, integrating audio and video into assignments, and completing virtual training sessions—are valuable across numerous professions.

Features of a online education platform

Laurillard and Ljubojevic (2011) emphasize that the abundance of educational technology options can overwhelm teachers, making it challenging to select the most suitable tools for their instructional needs They argue that software designed without considering teachers' perspectives can diminish their enthusiasm and effectiveness Therefore, the ideal educational platform should empower educators and enhance the learning experience, rather than adding to their concerns.

Choosing the right online platform can be challenging due to the diverse features and capabilities offered, as each platform claims to cater to both teachers and students This complexity often discourages educators and learners from exploring the vast opportunities available in the digital learning landscape.

So here are six must-have features that an online teaching or training software should satisfy before you decide on adding technology to your existing methods.”

According to Laurillard and Ljubojevic (2011), the significant increase in teachers opting for online education is largely due to the extensive reach provided by online platforms and the internet This allows educators to connect with students globally, a feat unattainable through traditional teaching methods When selecting an online teaching platform, it's crucial for teachers to choose one with a substantial number of active users, either globally or within their target region, and features that cater to a diverse student base Additionally, platforms that offer support for multiple languages are essential, enabling educators to teach without the constraints of language barriers.

Effective teaching encompasses a range of activities designed to foster learning, requiring more than just a deep understanding of the subject matter Teachers must also recognize various factors influencing the learning process, such as content delivery, course design, and student engagement It is essential for educators to be aware of their students' abilities and unique learning needs, as a teacher's effectiveness can be assessed through the levels of student engagement and comprehension of the material.

Online platforms empower teachers to create their own academies while providing valuable insights into course performance and student engagement These platforms generate detailed reports that track student activities, including content consumption, attendance in live classes, and course completion rates, helping educators monitor dropout rates By leveraging this data, teachers can refine their course materials, enhance their teaching methods, and implement strategies to boost student engagement, ultimately leading to improved learning outcomes.

Teachers invest significant effort in developing their instructional materials, which they consider their intellectual property Consequently, it is understandable that they are concerned about the security of their content, as online information can be easily accessed and utilized by anyone.

Content security is a major concern for educators teaching online or offline To establish content ownership, it's crucial to control access and dissemination, ensuring that only intended students can access the material Utilizing technologies such as server security and encryption is vital for protecting data on online platforms Before choosing a platform, it's important to understand who has access to your data and the methods they use to obtain it.

The choice of software or platform significantly influences the range of online teaching and training activities available It's essential to consider the level and nature of interaction you typically engage in with your students to select the most suitable software for your needs.

To enhance student engagement in your course, it's essential to incorporate interactive elements like polls and quizzes, along with live audio and video communication Therefore, selecting a versatile platform that effectively supports these features is crucial for fostering a dynamic learning environment.

When selecting software or a platform for instructional content, it's essential to ensure compatibility with various widely-used formats, including PDF, Microsoft Word, presentations, audio, and video.

Smartphones and tablets are revolutionizing our access to information and connectivity, allowing for instant consumption of content such as informal electronics lessons on YouTube and online courses This rapid data consumption on mobile devices is seamlessly integrating education into our daily lives, empowering students by making mobile learning a personal choice rather than a teacher-directed experience.

As educational methods and learning requirements evolve, so do the tools available for instruction The online education landscape is rapidly transforming, prompting both educators and learners to embrace new technologies The increasing number of individuals entering the online community is driven by factors such as ease of use, scalability, flexibility, and affordability Consequently, selecting the appropriate platform or software is essential for the success of teaching, training, or business initiatives.

Doug Madden from Honolulu Community College emphasized that the criteria for effective online courses are derived from the author's extensive experience in web course development, writing, and research Given the diverse nature of online courses, various disciplines, and distinct audiences, not all criteria will be universally applicable These guidelines serve as a general framework rather than strict rules for online course creation.

Providing training on how to access and navigate the course is essential for student success Many students delay setting up their email accounts, seek computer assistance only after classes begin, and often underestimate the costs of purchasing a computer Additionally, they may assume that having a computer guarantees Internet access To address these challenges, early communication with students is crucial, and pre-course training on course navigation, email usage, and participation in class discussions is highly recommended.

A course syllabus should be presented no later than at the first class.

The research hypothesis

A study at Topica Edtech Group revealed that their product, Topica Native, was utilized by thousands of learners, who engaged in an innovative English learning method with teachers located thousands of miles away.

From January to March 2018, a total of 500 learners at Topica Native completed questionnaires at home, allowing them ample time to provide thoughtful responses, which were returned one week later.

The questionnaire consists of seven questions, organized into two sections The first section gathers general information about the learners, while the second section, questions one to three, explores their attitudes toward learning English The remaining questions focus on the challenges learners face and the solutions they find when studying English online at Topica.

To address the questions, the survey data was organized into various lesson categories The quantitative data was presented in tables for clarity, followed by both descriptive and interpretive analyses to derive meaningful insights.

This section has thoroughly outlined the context, data collection methods, and data analysis techniques employed in this study The key findings will be presented and analyzed in the following section.

Results and discussion

3.3.1 Current situation of online learning at Topica Edtech Group

The presented and analyzed data were taken from questionnaires for learners at Topica Native on January to March 2018.

Firstly, as can be seen from the table below, the learners’ profile plays a very important role in deciding what courses they should apply.

Years of learning English before attending

The total number of the students in the studying was 500 of which 290 were female and 210 were male

Most of students at Topica Native learnt English for less than 1 year (47%).

18.2% spent from 3 to 5 years studying this language 15.4 % had experience of 1 –

In a study of English language learners, 3.4% reported no prior experience with the language, often due to it not being a compulsory subject in their high schools or because they had focused on other languages like French, Russian, or Chinese The majority of participants (82.2%, or 411 students) were from rural areas surrounding Hanoi, while only 89 students hailed from major cities This geographical disparity resulted in varied experiences in English learning, as countryside students were primarily taught through traditional methods and lacked opportunities for practical communication Consequently, they struggled to adapt to modern communicative approaches in learning English.

The attitude of Learners at Topica towards the position of English

The data about the attitude of learners at Topica Native towards the position of learning English was summarized in the table below.

The chart indicates that a significant majority of students at Topica Native recognize the importance of learning English, with 60.2% considering it very important and 34% deeming it important Only 3% of the students held a neutral perspective on the significance of English language learning.

However, 2.8% and 0% claimed that it was not very important or unimportant.

Information obtained from the survey reveals that the largest proportion of participants found learning English help them improve communication skills.

Many learners are motivated to study English for reasons beyond simply passing exams, with 80.4% seeking improvement due to a lack of practice opportunities Teaching English online presents an effective solution for these individuals, as it accommodates their busy schedules and addresses the shortcomings of traditional offline learning methods.

The opinions of students at Topica Native about the matching with learning English online

Chart 1 reveals that 35.3% of respondents consider the courses "Suitable," while 24.4% feel they are "Strongly Suitable." Conversely, 18.2% rated the courses as "Not Really Suitable," primarily due to difficulties in following the course material or a mismatch in the course sequence relative to their skill level Additionally, 21.1% deemed the courses "Not Suitable," citing reasons such as having purchased the entire course package or a preference for specific topics.

3.3.2 Problems in learning English online for the learners at Topica Native

The graph reveals that unqualified teachers at Topica Native are the primary challenge faced by learners, followed closely by limited time availability Additionally, students reported decreased focus during online learning compared to traditional classroom settings Other contributing factors include poor internet connectivity and an inconvenient learning platform.

The reasons for the issue can be categorized into two main groups: objective and subjective Objective reasons include factors such as internet access and the current number of learners In contrast, subjective reasons pertain to the disadvantages of Topica Native and the obstacles faced by learners.

Internet access significantly impacts the quality of lessons, with many learners in Vietnam expressing frustration over the country's ranking of 58th in global Internet connectivity This limited access often hinders their ability to attend classes or fully comprehend the material presented by teachers.

Topica Native was trying to optimizing the system to reduce the crushing website with the milion of accessers at the same moment

As regarded to the related facility, the computers of the learners were also the factors that caused difficulties for the studying online

Topica Native acknowledged that their system required optimization, as they were the first organization in Vietnam to offer online English learning through their proprietary platform Unlike other organizations that relied on third-party applications like Skype, Topica Native was a pioneer in this field, having implemented their system in the USA and other developed countries However, being a pioneer often comes with challenges, as it necessitates time for experimenting with new technologies.

The Topica Native system exhibited several issues, particularly during lesson initiation, where both teachers and learners were often required to wait for a technician to verify the system's functionality This delay typically consumed around five minutes, impacting the overall efficiency of the class.

One of the primary challenges faced by learners at Topica Native was the quality of the teaching staff, which received significant complaints With over 1,000 teachers globally, maintaining consistent teaching standards proved to be a significant obstacle for the platform.

While online learning offers flexibility, it can lead to distractions that hinder student focus Additionally, the limited interaction between teachers and students can impact the overall learning experience.

Chapter three discusses the findings from the questionnaires, where responses were analyzed and categorized, then compared to previous research The final section highlights the challenges faced by online learners at Topica Native and offers tailored solutions to address these issues.

RECOMMENDATIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

Suggested solutions

Solutions to Problem 1: Bad internet access

Two potential causes of issues may arise from either the learners' internet access or Topica's connectivity It is essential for Topica to verify internet access prior to the start of each class In the event of connectivity problems on the learners' end, technicians should promptly utilize the "TeamViewer" application to remotely access the learners' computers or laptops for troubleshooting.

By this way, the technician could fix the technical problems as soon as possible

Solutions to Problem 2: Inconvinient platform

Topica native should make the daily survey for the learners to understand more about their difficulties to improve the user experience

A very good solution to this problem was to build up an IT work force for fixing all the errors or the false of the system to support the learners.

Solutions to Problem 3: Unqualified teachers

The challenge I faced in implementing oral activities stemmed from the presence of unqualified teachers who had a limited teaching ability While their background knowledge was sufficient for conversation, their skills in effectively clarifying concepts for learners were lacking.

Therefore, Topica ought to weekly hold up workshops or training classes for them to update new method of teaching and learning English.

Learners have proposed that Topica incorporate a "rate the teacher" feature immediately following each course This addition could serve as a valuable tool for Topica Native to evaluate and categorize teachers globally.

Solutions to Problem 4: Lack of focus

Topica Native leverages advanced artificial intelligence to analyze learner behavior, enhancing the educational experience Launched in 2018, Native Gen 4 incorporates the latest technology, allowing AI to accurately assess the proficiency levels of students during online classes.

To address the lack of focus among online learners, a tiered warning system can be implemented For example, if a student attends class three times a week, they would receive a level 3 warning; attending twice a week would result in a level 2 warning, while missing all classes in a week would trigger a level 1 (red alert) warning Online instructors would then proactively reach out to these learners to provide support and help resolve any issues they may be facing.

Solutions to Problem 5: Limited time allowance

At Topica Native‘s courses, each English lesson lasted 3 periods Teachers of English were responsible for teaching new English topics, structures and all the vocabulary related to these topics

Teachers and students faced challenges in completing their tasks within the 120-minute timeframe, which included a 15-minute break Many students hoped for a more flexible lesson schedule that could adapt to their needs Topica Native was designed to allow learners to select their preferred lesson duration just before the session began.

Limitations of the study
