1.1 Rationale During my four years of study at Duy Tan University, I was trained in professional translation skills I have studied translation through genres such as economic reports, international and domestic news, literary works, short stories, and poems Now, I want to challenge myself with a topic that I have always loved since I was a child That is the marketing Marketing has always been an interesting topic so people are constantly learning and conquering it Hence, there are dozens of research papers about marketing coming out every year Therefore, understanding them requires a solid linguistic background, grasping technical terms, analyzing sentence structures correctly, and writing phrases or words that best fit the target language I realized that this is an interesting challenge for me At the same time, I can learn and improve my translation skills through this graduation paper Finally, I also finished the translation with all my efforts I hope my translation can bring people a lot of useful and interesting information about the universe 1.2 Aims and objectives 1.2.1 Aims The study aims at: - Showing my skills in translating a document - Having capability to analyze difficult words and structures - Understanding and overcoming language barriers between two countries - Imparting the author's intended message to readers 1.2.2 Objectives In order to get these above-stated aims, the following objectives are set: - Mastering the grammatical structures of the sentence - Translating text smoothly and naturally Student: Nguyen Huu Thai Hy Code: 24213110564 Graduation Thesis 2 Supervisor: Tran Thi Minh Giang, Ph.D - Analyzing complicated words, phrases, structures, contexts, etc 1.3 Scope of the Study This graduation paper belongs to part 1 chapter 3 named: "Establishing a Corporate Presence” of the book: "Facebook Marketing: Leveraging Facebook’s Features for Your Marketing Campaigns, Third Edition” by Brain Carter and Justin Levy, 2012 This chapter will be translated into Vietnamese, and I will analyze some important points about grammatical structures and vocabulary During the translation process, I found some difficulties when I translated such as universal terms, the way to use English grammar, and some other problems of language 1.3.1 Text Features This intriguing and fascinating book should not be missed by anyone who is interested in learning about marketing and promoting the business in social media, especially on Facebook All about this book analyzes the details of how to build the company online, and each part is separate content but focuses on the general benefit or information that helps people a lot in the business I chose to translate chapter 3 of part 1 “Leveraging Facebook's Features for Your Marketing Campaigns” because it made me interested in the content “Establishing a Corporate Presence” is really necessary for someone that is a newbie and never approaches social media 1.3.2 Text Length In the graduation thesis, I chose to translate part 1 chapter 3 named: "Establishing a Corporate Presence” of the book: "Facebook Marketing: Leveraging Facebook’s Features for Your Marketing Campaigns, Third Edition” the translation is approximately three thousand nine hundred sixty seven words long 1.3.3 Text Organization The text is divided into a lot of small sections and it is organized as follows: Section one: Developing a Corporate Facebook Presence Section two: Facebook Pages Section three: Apps for Pages Student: Nguyen Huu Thai Hy Code: 24213110564 Graduation Thesis 40 Supervisor: Tran Thi Minh Giang, Ph.D [4] A small piece of metal with a ring attached which is pulled to open cans of food, drink, etc [5] A bill for goods you receive but pay for later, especially for food or drinks in a restaurant or bar; the price or cost of something [6] A small solid piece of an illegal drug [7] A way of representing musical notes on paper by showing the position of the fingers on a musical instrument rather than the actual notes; an example of this In this context, I choose the meaning “an additional document or page that can be opened on computer software” but in the only app, not computer This is my translate version: “Trang cho phép quản trị viên tùy chỉnh các mục, thêm thông tin cơ bản và kiểm soát xem người hâm mộ có thể đăng lên tường, tải ảnh và video lên hay không cũng như các biện pháp kiểm soát bảo mật khác” Example 12: “Artist, Band, or Public Figure” (P9) As the Cambridge Dictionary, The noun phrase “Public Figure” defined “a famous person who is often written about in newspapers and magazines or is often on television or the radio” so I choose the meaning “Người của công chúng” in this context My suggested version: “Nghệ sĩ, ban nhạc hoặc Người của công chúng” Example 13: “Because this Page is set up as an extension of your brand on Facebook, you need to use your corporate logo (or your headshot if you’re a solo entrepreneur) as your default picture (P12) This noun phrase “solo entrepreneur” makes me imagine a businessman who developed his career by himself So I decided “doanh nhân tự thân” in this case and here is my suggested version: “Bởi vì Trang này được thiết lập như một phần mở rộng của thương hiệu của bạn trên Facebook, bạn cần sử dụng biểu tượng công ty của mình (hoặc ảnh chụp chính xác của bạn nếu bạn là một doanh nhân tự thân) làm and then continue to improve as time goes on.” (P10) The idiom “Put one’s best foot forward” is new knowledge to me I've never seen this phrase before so I didn't know how to translate it at first After searching in Cambridge Dictionary as defined “to try as hard as you can”, so I choose this version for my text: “Cố gắng hết sức tạo cho trang của bạn thật ấn tượng để bắt đầu và sau đó tiếp tục cải thiện theo thời gian” 4.2 Structures One of the other challenges during the translation process is grammar It’s really an important thing that needs to be concentrated on Different languages have their own expressions and grammatical structures For that reason, before translating I have to consider and research very clearly for the best version without changing the meaning 4.2.1 Simple Sentences A simple sentence is a sentence that includes only one independent clause, that is, a simple sentence only includes one subject and one predicate Example 15: “Brian treats Facebook similarly.” (P3) This is a simple sentence with structure: SVOA Brian treats Facebook similarly S V O A My suggested version is: “Brain đối với Facebook cũng tương tự.” Example 16: “Facebook is a very personal social network” (P5) This is a simple sentence with structure: SVC Facebook is a very personal social network S V to be Cs My suggested version is: “Facebook là một sự kết nối xã hội rất cá clause and at least one dependent clause The dependent clauses can be noun clauses, adjective clauses, and adverbial clauses 4.2.2.1 Complex Sentences with Noun Clauses A noun clause is a dependent clause that may function as the subject, direct object, indirect object, or object of a preposition A sentence containing a noun clause will usually be a compound sentence Student: Nguyen Huu Thai Hy or pronoun There are two types of relative clauses: restrictive relative clause and non- restrictive relative clause A relative clause includes relative adverbs (who, whom, whose, which, where, when, why) at the beginning of the clause that can be omitted in several circumstances In many cases, commas are required Example 18: “Developing a presence on Facebook gives you the opportunity to find these fans and activate them by providing them with a community in which they can interact with one another and with your company” Developing a presence on Facebook gives you the opportunity to find about a potential partnership A The independent clause is “They can get to know him as an individual” And the dependent clause is “before ever meeting at a networking event or having a conference call semicolon or conjunction The independent clauses are joined with coordinators (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, and so) Example 20: “Generation X prefers less of a professional versus personal boundary sentence where the subject is the person or object affected by the act, used to emphasize the object affected by that action The tense of the passive sentence must follow the tense of the active sentence It is used to show interest in the person or object that experiences an action rather than the person or object that performs the action Example 22: “That means the first person who enters your company into Facebook needs to know how it should be listed.” (P6) That means the first person who enters your company into Facebook needs to know how it should be listed The structure of this passive voice sentence is: Modal Verb+Be+Past Participle Here is my suggested version: “Điều đó có nghĩa là người đầu tiên tham gia vào công ty của bạn trên Facebook cần biết nó được liệt kê như thế nào” 4.2.5 Sentences with Dummy Subject English clauses that are not imperatives must have a subject Sometimes we need to use a “dummy” or “empty” or “artificial” subject if there is no subject attached to the verb, and the real subject is somewhere in the clause It and there are two dummy subjects used in English Example 23: “Previously, there was an official apps directory, but Facebook Minh Giang, Ph.D In order to make the sentence’s meaning adapt to the Vietnamese style, I decided to change the word order a little bit in words’ order when translating Here is my suggested version: “Trước đây, có một thư mục ứng dụng chính thức, nhưng Facebook đã đóng nó” Example 24: “With Facebook continuing to grow in popularity, it makes sense to develop a corporate presence” ̣ (P6) In this sentence: - Dummy subject: “It” - Real subject: “Facebook” Below is my suggested translation: “Với việc Facebook tiếp tục phổ biến, phát triển sự hiện diện của công ty là một việc rất hợp lý” CHAPTER 5 DIFFICULTIES AND SOLUTIONS 5.1 Difficulties Translating English texts in Vietnamese is not an easy task, as English has many aspects Of these aspects, cross-cultural differences are the most common cause of problems Because every culture has its own language and specific ways of sharing ideas and ideas, lexical terms, including multiple words, phrasal verbs, idioms, and grammatical structures are very different In this chapter, we would like to list the issues that translators usually have to deal with when translating text from SL to TL First of all, it is difficult to find the proper meaning of an ambiguous word in a dictionary We have those definitions and pinpoint their meanings, but we cannot translate them fluently and naturally into Vietnamese This is because the expressions in English and Vietnamese are so different that translators may not be able to accurately convey the meaning of the writer To make a good translation, you need to find a matching Vietnamese word that the author's style This task requires a lot of time and effort It can take a week to a month to understand "expensive words" This book focuses on the attitude of the author, which is difficult to express, so there are certain terms and phrases that must be explained Structure is also a factor that bothers us When you encounter an unusual structure when translating from English to Vietnamese, you usually make the typical mistake This makes the TL version sound very unnatural in English Also, the author's expression styles are so diverse that it can be a hassle if you can't translate flexibly In summary, difficulty is an unavoidable problem in the translation process But at the same time, they also offer us the opportunity to broaden our horizons 5.2 Solutions Translating this thesis brings me many advantages I had the opportunity to put what I learned into practice in order to publish a good translation at TL During this time, I would like to gain valuable experience and propose the following strategies to help learners overcome translation difficulties First, you need to read the entire original text to understand the main idea.The words after this step If you capture an idea in SL, it may be easier to express it in TL Next, we need the first draft translation It's time to get a deeper understanding of both vocabulary and structure As for vocabulary, its meaning is provided not only by dictionaries but also by the internet For structure, one sentence must be carefully analyzed before identifying the subject, subject verb, and other components Especially when translating, you need to pay attention to the situation of the text to minimize vocabulary misunderstandings Finally, proofread and edit the first draft to create the finished version In particular, you need to replace nasty words and sentences, simplify ambiguous sentences, omit unnecessary words, and emphasize the gist to explain the author's meaning You also need to send your During the thesis, I dealt with many difficulties To complete this dissertation, I applied what I had accumulated in college over the last four years During the translation process, I noticed that the lexicon was still inadequate and immature.It confused not only some English words, but also Vietnamese vocabulary.I hesitated a little to decide the meaning of SL to express the author's idea I also had a problem parsing the structure of a sentence and made some serious mistakes that needed to be rewritten many times to get a complete translation Also, I had to look it up many times to find additional references to translate the text Translation of this book may require knowledge in many relevant areas I am fortunate to have accumulated considerable accumulation during my four years of research at the University of Duy Tan However, you often need to search further for the source you want to translate During my four years at Duy Tan University, I feel fortunate to have gained a lot of valuable knowledge I admit that I have many drawbacks, but I will always do my best to improve in order to become a professional translator in the future 6.2 Suggestions 6.2.1 Suggestions for
