CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION 1.1 RATIONALE As an English major student, I always found that there is a growing need for translation, especially in the fields of travel and entertainment Therefore, a translator must be able to not only translate but also absorb new sources of knowledge about various fields around the world Moreover, tourism and entertainment are the most essential and rapidly growing industries day by day in Vietnam As a result, I chose the book “Recreation, Event, and Tourism Businesses “with the purpose of giving people a practical overview of the recreation, event and tourism field and the business planning process This book provides a comprehensive overview of the industry, offers new insights for current practitioners, and thoroughly prepares for students interested in careers in the recreation, event and tourism industry It not only shows the combination of expertise in these fields, but also explains how the industry works in business In addition, this book also describes how companies are started, operated, and managed, including information on service matters, risk management, finance, and marketing It provides examples of how businesses can be operated in a more sustainable, environmentally friendly manner I hope that with all my skill and knowledge I can create a complete translation and gain appreciation In particular, through the suggestion version, I can provide some recreation, event and tourism knowledge for everyone 1.2 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES 1.2.1 Aims This paper aims at: - Demonstrating my ability in translating a document tiếp là một bên trung gian.” 4.2.2 Compound sentences A compound sentence is a sentence that has at least two independent clauses that have related ideas The independent clauses can be joined by a coordinating conjunction (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) with a comma or by a semicolon Example 22: “Later, food service became a frequent component of your events, and the city wanted you to get a food establishment permit” (paragraph 1) There are two independent clauses which are joined by a coordinate “and” The first independent clause is: Later, food service became a frequent component of your events The second independent clause is: the city wanted you to get a food establishment permit Suggested version: “Sau đó, dịch vụ ăn uống trở thành một mảng kinh doanh bạn và thành phố muốn bạn xin giấy phép thành lập sở thực phẩm” Example 23: “Business expenses averaged 39 percent of revenue, gross operatingmargin was 44 percent, and there was a net operating profit of percent.”(paragraph 17) There are three independent clauses in this compound sentence They are connected by a coordinator “and” The first independent clause is: Business expenses averaged 39 percent of revenue Student: there was a net operating profit of percent Suggested version: “Chi phí kinh doanh trung bình chiếm 39% doanh thu, tỷ suất lợi nhuận hoạt động gộp là 44% và lợi nhuận hoạt động ròng là 5%.” Example 24:“POS systems are often specialized for a specific type of retail product, or you can customize off-the-shelf systems to meet your needs.”(paragraph 16) There are two independent clauses which are joined by a coordinator “or” in this sentence The first independent clause is: POS systems are often specialized for a specific type of retail product The second independent clause is : you can customize off-the-shelf systems to meet your needs Suggested version: “Hệ thống điểm bán lẻ thường chuyên biệt cho một loại sản phẩm bán lẻ cụ thể bạn có thể tùy chỉnh hệ thống bán sẵn để đáp ứng nhu cầu mình.” 4.2.3 Complex sentences During the translation process, I met a lot of difficult structures that made me confused, particularly complex sentence A complex sentence is a sentence with one independent clause (can stand alone) with at least one dependent clause It is often used to make clear which ideas are the most important and which ideas are subordinated The authors used a variety of complex structures in this text Now, I would like to take some sentences as examples: Student: Nguyen Ngoc Tra MyCode: 23203111721 Graduation Paper 71 Supervisor: Kieu Thi Dong Thanh, M.A 4.2.3.1 Complex sentences with Adverbial Clause An adverbial clause is a dependent clause that functions as an adverb That is, the entire clause modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb As with all clauses, it contains a subject and predicate, though the subject as well as the (predicate) verb may sometimes be omitted and implied It is used to modify the verb of the independent clause and tells readers about the time, place, reason, purpose, result Example 25: “ Passion is an essential feature of a good salesperson because the fervor is contagious to the client and revs up sales opportunities.”(paragraph 16) In this sentence, the independent clause is: “Passion is an essential feature of a good salesperson” and the dependent clause is: “ because the fervor is contagious to the client and revs up sales opportunities.” Besides, they are connected by the subordinator “because” (adverbial clause of reason), so I decided to translate from “because” into “bởi vì” Suggested Version: “ Sự đam mê là một đặc điểm cần thiết một nhân viên bán hàng giỏi vì sự nhiệt tình có thể tác động đến khách hàng và làm tăng hội bán hàng ” Example 26: “ For example, a beginner at a new recreation activity often does not want to make a substantial financial commitment in gear before they are sure of their level of interest.”(paragraph 21) There are two clauses in this complex sentence The independent clause is: “For example, a beginner at a new recreation activity often does not want to make a substantial financial commitment in gear” And the dependent clause is: “before they are sure of their level of interest” They are linked by the subordinator “before” (adverbial clause of time) Based on the context, I used “trước khi” to translate the subordinating conjunction khơng ḿn chi mợt khoản tài lớn trước họ chắn về mức đợ tin tưởng họ.” 4.2.3.2 Complex sentences with Relative Clause A relative clause, also called an adjective clause, modifies a noun A relative clause can modify any noun in the sentence: a subject, an objective of a preposition A relative clause begins with a relative pronoun (who, whom, whose, which, that, where, when, why) Sometimes the pronoun can be omitted In addition, the relative clause isn’t used in Vietnamese, so it is a challenge for translators to transfer the text into target language To solve this problem, I frequently ignore the relative pronoun or convert it into another form in order to make the translation more familiar to readers Example 27: “The Seattle area is a particularly good example of small outdoor recreation manufacturers who achieved more than $195 million in sales in 2001.”(paragraph 11) This sentence has two clauses: - The independent clause: The Seattle area is a particularly good example of small outdoor recreation manufacturers - The dependent clause : who achieved more than $195 million in sales in 2001 In this sentence, the dependent clause functions as adjective clause and it begins with a relative pronoun “who” The relative pronoun “who” modifies for “ small outdoor recreation manufacturers” Furthermore, in Vietnamse, we usually use “người mà” to express the meaning supplement However, “người mà” will make the suggested version rough and unnatural, so in this case, I didn’t transfer the relative pronoun Student: Nguyen Ngoc Tra MyCode: 23203111721 Graduation Paper 73 Supervisor: Kieu Thi Dong Thanh, M.A Suggested Version: “Khu vực Seattle là mợt ví dụ điển hình về nhà sản xuất giải trí ngoài trời quy mô nhỏ đạt được doanh thu 195 triệu đô la vào năm 2001” Example 28: “There are many commercial recreation businesses whose income relies heavily on equipment rentals such as event equipment companies, winter sports shops, outdoors shops, and kayak or bicycle rental shops.”(paragraph 13) This sentence contain two clauses: - The independent clause: There are many commercial recreation businesses - The dependent clause: whose income relies heavily on equipment rentals such as event equipment companies, winter sports shops, outdoors shops, and kayak or bicycle rental shops In this sentence, the dependent clause functions as adjective clause and it begins with a relative pronoun “whose” The relative pronoun “whose” modifies the object “commercial recreation businesses” However, in this case, if we remained the form of relative clause, it’s very difficult to transfer fluently Thus, I decided to ignore the relative pronoun when translating Suggested Version: “Có nhiều doanh nghiệp giải trí thương mại có thu nhập chủ yếu dựa vào việc cho thuê thiết bị, chẳng hạn công ty thiết bị sự kiện, cửa hàng thể thao mùa đông, cửa hàng ngoài trời và cửa hàng cho thuê thuyền kayak xe đạp” 4.2.3.3 Complex sentences with Noun Clause: Noun clauses are subordinate clause that acts as noun Noun clause begin with words such as how, that, what, whatever, when, where, whether, which, whichever, who, whoever, whom, whomever and and why and can act as the subjects, direct objects, indirect objects, predicate nominatives, or objects of Student: Nguyen Ngoc Tra MyCode: 23203111721 Graduation Paper 74 Supervisor: Kieu Thi Dong Thanh, M.A a preposition In the process of translating this document, I also got a lot of difficulties in analyzing and transferring to the Vietnamese language Here are some examples of noun clauses and my suggested versions Example 29: “A compounding factor was that at first your sales staff was not able to turn lookers into buyers.”(paragraph 1) In this sentence, we can see the dependent clause “that at first your sales staff was not able to turn lookers into buyers” works as a noun clause and it funtions as subject complement in this complex sentence In English, “that” can be understood as “cái đó, rằng” However, I simply translated it: Suggested Version: “Thêm nữa, lúc đầu nhân viên bán hàng bạn thuyết phục những người xem hàng thành người mua.” Example 30: “Research has shown that music strongly affects the atmosphere of your retail space.”(paragraph 13) In this sentence, the dependent clause “that music strongly affects the atmosphere of your retail space” is a noun clause standing as object modifying the verb “shown” Depending on the analysis, I translated it: Suggested Version: “Nghiên cứu âm nhạc ảnh hưởng mạnh mẽ đến bầu khơng khí khơng gian bán lẻ bạn.” 4.2.4 Compound – Complex sentences A compound-complex sentence is made from two independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses Example 31: “Although product price and quality are critical, your retail sales staff, like your activity staff, can make or break the experience, and clients judge your store through their interaction with staff.” (paragraph 15) In this sentence, we can see that: The first independent clause is: your retail sales staff, like your activity staff, can make or break the experience Student: Nguyen Ngoc Tra MyCode: 23203111721 Graduation Paper 75 Supervisor: Kieu Thi Dong Thanh, M.A The second independent clause is: clients judge your store through their interaction with staff The dependent clause is: Although product price and quality are critical Suggested translation: “Mặc dù giá cả và chất lượng sản phẩm là rất quan trọng, nhân viên bán lẻ bạn, nhân viên tạo hoạt động bạn có thể tạo phá vỡ những trải nghiệm và khách hàng đánh giá cửa hàng bạn thông qua việc họ tương tác với nhân viên.” Example 32: “A long-standing rule involes doubling what you paid for an item, but this is not always realistic, especially with higher-priced equipment”(paragraph 13) The first independent clause is: A long-standing rule involes doubling what you paid for an item The second independent containing is: but this is not always realistic, especially with higher-priced equipment The dependent clause is: what you paid for an item Suggested version: “Một quy tắc có từ lâu đời áp dụng để tăng gấp đôi số tiền bạn trả cho một món đồ, điều này không phải lúc nào thực tế, đặc biệt là với những thiết bị có giá cao hơn” 4.2.5 Empty Subject As Cambridge dictionary Dummy subject defifined that English clauses which are not imperatives must have a subject Sometimes we need to use a ‘dummy’ or ‘empty’ or ‘artificial’ subject when there is no subject attached to the verb, and where the real subject is somewhere else in the clause It and there are the two dummy subjects used in English Student: Nguyen Ngoc Tra MyCode: 23203111721 Graduation Paper 76 Supervisor: Kieu Thi Dong Thanh, M.A Example 33: “There are clear advantages to physical stores and online sales, but the synergy of both working in tandem is indisputable.”(paragraph 4) In this sentence, the author used the empty subject to express his idea The empty subject “there are” indicates the real subject “clear advantages” However, this form of sentence isn’t existed in Vietnamese Thus, to translate this kind of sentence, we must get the main idea, then transfer this meaning by the free way that is suitable to the Vietnamese culture and style Suggested Version: “Có nhiều lợi rõ ràng đối với cửa hàng thực và bán hàng trực tuyến, nhiên sức mạnh tổng hợp cả hai hoạt động song song là chối cãi.” Example 34: “It is becoming more difficult for staff to handle these challenges on a daily basis without lashing at the customer or becoming demoralized, which often results in employee burnout.” (paragraph 15) This sentence has an empty subject “it” but its real subject is “staff” Therefore, in order to make the sentence’s meaning adapt to the Vietnamese style, I decided to change a little bit in words’ order when translating Suggested Version: “Thật khó cho nhân viên phải đối mặt với những thử thách này hàng ngày mà khơng trích khách hàng bị xuống tinh thần, điều này thường khiến nhân viên bị kiệt sức.” Student: Nguyen Ngoc Tra MyCode: 23203111721 Graduation Paper 77 Supervisor: Kieu Thi Dong Thanh, M.A CHAPTER 5: DIFFICULTIES AND SOLUTIONS 5.1 Difficulties In the process of translating this book, I have used the experiences and lessons learned from the time studying at DTU The skills of translation, lookup, finding and correcting errors, etc have been applied a lot in this process I think I did my best However, each language has its own characteristics and expressions, so it is difficult to accurately translate a text from English into Vietnamese So, in the process of doing this graduation paper, I encountered many difficulties.Here are the difficulties I have encountered: First is the vocabulary Because the text I choose to translate is recreation, event and tourism knowledge, so sometimes I not have the ability to understand and translate some expressions of the text correctly In addition, during the translation process, I also caught many words that have multiple and abstract meaning, so I was confused to choose the appropriate meaning for the translated sentences or ideas and it also makes me spend a lot of time looking up and choosing the most suitable meaning Second, grammar is also one of the factors that make me encounter many obstacles because the grammar between English and Vietnamese is very different There are many structures that are very common in English but not exist in Vietnamese, for example empty subject structures, relative clause, noun clause, and so on Therefore, in order to express English words into Vietnamese, I not only have to understand the author's meaning but also know how convert the structure properly However, due to differences in language usage in different countries, many translations are not natural For example, indigenous people often use passive expressions, but Vietnamese people are the exact opposite, they use active expressions to express their ideas or Student: Nguyen Ngoc Tra MyCode: 23203111721 Graduation Paper 78 Supervisor: Kieu Thi Dong Thanh, M.A intentions And that is also why sometimes our translated text is a bit rough and unnatural Third, I translated a document about recreation, events and tourism, so I met up with many specific terms However, the lack of knowledge in this field made it difficult for me to convert these terms into the TL Furthermore, these one usually are not defined in the dictionary, so translating these terms is a challenge Besides, idioms and expressions are also the elements that make me felt difficult to translate In conclusion, translation in general and translating text in particular is not a simple process Therefore, in order to successfully translate a text, translators need to have extensive knowledge of many different fields Moreover, translators need to master the structure and learn to get a wide range of vocabulary in both languages 5.2.Solutions Although I had to face many difficulties during the translation process, I found the solutions for particular situation Firstly, I foundand read some books and documents related to Recreation, Event and Tourism, so I had some knowledge of this field Then, I have to read the entire text first to understand the main idea of the text content to be translated Besides, I also referred to some thesis of the predecessors in the library and followed the directions of the Department to master the process and the way of doing graduation paper Secondly, I highlight words and phrases that I find difficult or hesitant to translate Then, I used different dictionaries like Free Dictionary, Cambridge Dictionary, Oxford Learner's Dictionary to be able to search all the meanings of those words and phrases and find the synonymous one However, we can not always find the the internet, then put them in the appropriate context to gain the suitable meanings Thirdly, I apply the intense concentration and necessary skills to analyze and translate the structure After completing the translation, I also have to ask my supervisor to help me point out what I wrong and show how to analyze difficult constructs or how to get the best and most relevant meaning In conclusion, during the translation process, translators encounter many difficulties in vocabulary, grammar structures and expressions, and I'm not exception Therefore, we need to have solid knowledge CHAPTER 6: CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTIONS 6.1 Conclusions This graduation paper is quite difficult for me However, I found that it very interesting to apply all of the valuable knowledge that I was taught and accumulated through the days of study at university to deal with difficulties In the translation, I discovered that acquiring specific knowledge of various fields can be extremely beneficial for translation Because there are too many strange words and phrases when I translate this text However, if I am familiar with the subject matter of the translation, it will be much easier Therefore, I feel that my vocabulary is still not enough Not only were a few English words puzzling me, but also was Vietnamese vocabulary, I also felt hesitant in choosing the appropriate TL word to fully convert the meaning of SL In addition, I also have many shortcomings and weaknesses in the grammar analysis process I had a lot of troubles in identifying and analyzing the sentence structure so I had to revise many times to get the best translation possible In short, this graduation paper is actually one of the great opportunities for me to improve my translation skills and boost my knowledge However, I am aware that I still have many shortcomings, so I will continue to study and practice work my skills as well as related knowledge in order to become a good translator 6.2 Suggestions 6.2.1 Suggestions for students in the Faculty of English During the process of making the graduation paper, I encountered numerous difficulties and challenges to complete Hence, I would like to give some
