enhancing their language proficiency, with the aims to identify students’ habit of using YouTube and investigate their attitude towards the implementation of YouTube into their learning, as well as the principles behind their utilization The research is designed to adopt both quantitative and qualitative methods, utilizing questionnaires and interviews to collect data among participants, who are freshmen and sophomores of Faculty of English Linguistics and Literature (EF) in Ho Chi Minh City University of Social Sciences and Humanities (HCMC USSH) Within the retrieved data, quantitative data have shown the patterns of YouTube general usage among participants, as well as usage of educational purposes Participants’ attitudes towards the practice of using YouTube for learning were also investigated Data analysis have shown that participants are relatively open and receptive to the prospect of YouTube as a learning tool Within the research findings, the methods of utilizing YouTube for language learning can be drawn out, which include enhancing the four skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking) and expanding vocabularies The implications for both learners and educators are also provided to make the practice of using YouTube more effectively The learners should invest their time into videos of their preference and make use of it to enhance their language proficiency As for the educators, learners’ level and attitudes and their performances should be taken into consideration while applying YouTube into the teaching process Introduction of the study 1.1 Rationale of the study The commencement of the Third Industrial Revolution brought about many changes in one’s daily life, including their methods of improving knowledge with the most prominent being the use of technology as a learning tool Learners in this era, with a high possibility of being “digital native”, a term referring to those who have grown up in an environment surrounded by digital technology, have many powerful tools under their commands that their predecessors have never dreamt of owning (Terantino, 2011) With massive collections of books stored in a device that fits snugly in one’s pocket, or the access to an infinite source of information just at the tips of their fingers, learners are being offered a myriad of means to acquire new knowledge; and it is an ever-evolving process Even before the availability of Internet-based video sources such as YouTube proved their potential, audiovisuals have made an evolution from Video Home System (VHS) and Digital Video Disc (DVD) to computers and smartphones, making obtaining knowledge more interesting than ever before As for learners of foreign languages, the landscape of these new-found opportunities broadens even more As the world becomes smaller and without-borders with the ever-ongoing process of global integration, language learners have been able to utilize numerous channels in infinitely many ways to aid their language acquisition The term Web 2.0 refers to websites that emphasize user-generated content and allow them to interact and collaborate with each other in a social media dialogue This paved the way to a myriad of platforms which, with the correct utilization, can be endlessly advantageous to language learners However, a surprising number of learners are unaware of their own opportunities to make the most out of their chances From observance and personal experience, the researchers have concluded that among those tools, one of the most novel is an intriguing and infinitely potential online video sharing platform widely known as YouTube YouTube is a video-sharing website based on twenty-first century technological accomplishments Slowly but surely, YouTube has ever since changed the way one perceives and learns, especially in language learning field Despite its significant scope and ever-rising potentials, the mass mostly watches entertaining videos on YouTube; as for educational videos, it only ranks as the 9th most watched genre (Evan, 2018) In addition, YouTube does not receive the attention it deserves from researchers It can be inferred from previous studies that there are a number of studies specializing in modern technological methods applied in foreign language learning; yet there is a lack of studying YouTube as the main focus, or viewing it as a single platform that serves as a foreign language learning tool As a result, the link between a foreign language learner and YouTube is disregarded This study therefore aims to explore the potentials that YouTube brings to foreign language learners, thereby providing a deep insight into the nature of YouTube Once readers are provided with enough information to rightly and thoroughly understand this video sharing platform, they will acknowledge its utility and have a fresh, accurate point of view on YouTube as well as its cognitive link to foreign language learners Then, this study will propose some methods so that students can take advantage of YouTube thoroughly and effectively both in and out of the classroom Only by this can we justice to the greatest contemporary online video-sharing website called YouTube 1.2 Research aims and objectives The focus of this research project is first to identify students’ habit of using YouTube, their tendency and preference in terms of video contents Next, the research also aims to investigate students’ attitude towards the prospect of YouTube being a language learning tool and their method of utilizing YouTube as such The following research objectives would facilitate the achievement of the above aims: To identify students’ patterns of using YouTube and their attitudes towards YouTube as a language learning tool To investigate the correlation between the pattern of using YouTube and students’ proficiency of the English language To investigate students’ ways of utilizing YouTube as an English learning tool either consciously or unconsciously Below are the main research questions given as a base: What are students’ patterns of using YouTube and their attitudes towards it? Is there a relationship between YouTube using patterns and students’ English proficiency? How students utilize YouTube as an English language learning tool? 1.3 Significance of the study The study can be a reference for those who desire to exploit the potential of YouTube as a language learning tool, especially English The ultimate goal is to help students recognize YouTube’s benefits as well as its drawbacks by looking into their own experience with YouTube, how it has affected their language competence either consciously or unconsciously Based on the suggested recommendations from participants’ methods of utilization, learners can both choose and adopt them for their own learning purposes Literature review Before the Internet, students studied solely by books and notes taken from classes, or under teachers’ instruction However, with the advancement of technology and Internet, students’ learning today has changed drastically Nowadays, teachers and students everywhere have learned to utilize advanced technology for better teaching and studying; for instance, the use of videos in classroom It is irrefutable that video is today’s medium and people spend more time with audio-visual than printed material (Sherman, 2003) Moreover, with the rise of technology, there have been a myriad of genres of videos being shared online, mainly on the most popular video-sharing website - YouTube Besides, as YouTube allows its users to create their own channels, people can upload their videos under categories such as entertainment, music, etc especially education, which is “mostly used by government, community agencies or teachers and students themselves.” (Martinho, Pinto, & Kuznetsova, 2012) Therefore, it is safe to conclude that YouTube provides great resource for students to search for the materials that they need (Liu, 2010) Appendix INTERVIEW GUIDE How much time you spend on watching YouTube a day? For example, vocabulary, I use it to learn some advanced vocabulary, [inaudible] definitions and its examples, that's why I don't have to [inaudible] In a video, they'll just give us about 10 words to memorize, it's [inaudible] Q: How you use YouTube to learn English? INTERVIEWEE: I often use it to find audio of listening tests, like [inaudible] tests When I learn [inaudible] skills, I often use it to watch famous speakers and learn from them INTERVIEWEE 4: Q: How much time you spend on watching YouTube a day? INTERVIEWEE: I always watch video clips in English Q: What you think of YouTube as a tool for entertainment? INTERVIEWEE: If you watch YouTube for the pure purpose of entertainment, I'd say you're not using it as effectively as you could Because there's more to YouTube than meet the eye Q: What you think of YouTube’s potential as a tool for language learning? What are the advantages of YouTube as a language learning tool? Explain, give examples INTERVIEWEE: I mean there are so many different kinds of content on YouTube more than just pure entertainment You can watch video clips to practice the language that you're learning, you can use YouTube to update news in the world, so on so far There are so many different ways which you can utilize different usages of YouTube 10 Q: What are the disadvantages of YouTube as a language learning tool? Explain, give examples INTERVIEWEE: Nothing is perfect If you're trying to learn English as a new language, and you're not sure where to go and how to proceed in your progress of learning English, YouTube might not be the best way possible YouTube might be a tool that helps you along the way, but you still need textbook, good teachers and school, all of that, to progress over time I'd say YouTube is not suitable for complete beginners Almost 100% of EF students who are intermediate or upper-intermediate can utilize YouTube as an English learning tool, definitely Q: Do you feel that your English have improved by watching YouTube? If so, why? INTERVIEWEE: My English has definitely improved a lot through watching YouTube videos Because, you know, in Vietnamese schools specifically, we don't spend a lot of time practicing our listening skills Most of the time, we heard the teachers talking, and to be quite frankly their speaking is not that good and of course they're not native So, you're technically not getting the best possible accents to work with So, by watching YouTube, you'll get to be exposed to a lot of native speaker accents that quickly improve the way you hear and the way you make sounds, and you kind of imitate the way the native speaks So, I think that is one of the ways which I improved myself a lot So specifically, your speaking and listening are two of the skills that have been improved the most Q: How you use YouTube to learn English? INTERVIEWEE: Me personally, I always choose YouTubers who are native American Because I love using the American accent because I think they are more informal and natural And I choose YouTubers who usually make videos where they discuss a specific subject; so, when I listen to them I can figure out how they subconsciously format their speech in a way that make their point clear to the audience 11 Focus groups FOCUS GROUP 1: Q: How much time you spend on watching YouTube a day? (or a week) INTERVIEWEE 1: Typically, an hour to an hour and a half a day because I spend watching a lot of talk shows and each of the episode is about 40-45 minutes INTERVIEWEE 2: I usually like to spend hour to hours a day and usually I will be listening to music for [inaudible] series film or something like that INTERVIEWEE 3: I normally use YouTube like to hours a day for music and movie trailers INTERVIEWEE 4: I only watch YouTube only 1-2 hours a day and 3-4 days a week I usually watch YouTube for about 2-3 hours a day for listening to music and also for the document that I need for my research or for my presentation Q: What are the contents you often watch on YouTube? INTERVIEWEE 1: Mostly entertainment including music, make up [inaudible] and tutorial and also talk shows or videos of people on the gameshows Mostly entertainment Mostly in English INTERVIEWEE 2: [inaudible] contains mostly in entertainment usually out music out movies and like 75% or lower in English INTERVIEWEE 3: Most of them I spent watching video games and E-sport and then I will spend like half of the time listening to music and watching music video INTERVIEWEE 4: I don't use YouTube very much but when I watch I only watch Vietnamese comedy and music so half of videos I watch are music video and half of the rest are about learning stuff like presentation, talk shows and other documents from the business world Q: What you think of YouTube as a learning tool? INTERVIEWEE 1: I think you can absolutely learn a lot of knowledge on YouTube from talk shows you can hear how people react to one another in a different culture and also you can learn how to differentiate between the language in daily life and language we study and also there are a lot of documentaries and reviews on everyday 12 life so I think it's really it has a lot of information but you can take from the online world INTERVIEWEE 3: So Because YouTube is the platform for people to upload everything about their life so they will learners if they go to YouTube to learn, they will learn about how to use language in context better than just watch videos at school INTERVIEWEE 4: You can also learn a kind of language for yourself from YouTube or survival skills or any skill that you like or hearing about other experience in every situation and some informative information about the field that you're learning about Q: What are the advantages of YouTube as a language learning tool? INTERVIEWEE 3: I think that YouTube is a chance for [inaudible] a way you can learn without the struggle the mindset of you're actually learning so half of the learning is easier to learn than from reading in books and stuffs INTERVIEWEE 4: Because YouTube have like various few various subject for each everybody taste that you can learn a language in the context that you like For example, Phil likes to learn English through make-up tutorial, but Howell likes to learn English through video games, and I like to learn English through like reviews or travel vlogs and YouTube has provided all of the information in the field in the way that we like Q: What you think when YouTube beside having a vast genre of a lot of types of videos we only get to experience authentic English but not just native speakers of the English language but also by a lot of different accents? INTERVIEWEE 1: I think one more thing like it's very important that we get exposure to think that we don't know so if we watch and see how people react in their daily life we will get to know the sense of how we are different but also kind of the same in one way of people around the world INTERVIEWEE 4: So, I think it's a good way for people to learn and to like by themselves learn the accents rather than they have to force them into an academic environment to learn different accents or try to connect to different accents YouTube has provided an environment with different accents right at their clicks 13 Q: Is there a way you consciously use English to study? Are there any strategies? INTERVIEWEE 1: So, I listen to music a lot, so when I want to learn some new words through music I will put on a lyric video And then At first I will not look at the lyrics but then if there is a part that I find to be difficult to understand, I'll look at the lyrics and then remember how that sounds and how it's pronounced and spelled And later on, I'll replicate that word INTERVIEWEE 2: I also use like lyric like look at the lyrics when listening to music or look at subtitles when watching videos or films to learn the way new words pronounce or spell INTERVIEWEE 3: I don't really want to make it into a strategy but whenever I watch a talk show that I come across a word I don't know, I stop the video and I search the dictionary for the definition of that word and how it's used and so Then I go back to the video and watch how, watch the context of that and how they use in order to, like, really know how to acquire that word INTERVIEWEE 4: Yes, I make YouTube a kind of strategy of my learning English because some of my housework I’m dealing with like iron clothes or washing the floor or something So, at that time I can totally concentrate in my learning process but at the same time I want to practice my listening skill so I just turn on some YouTube videos and I just let it there so that I can like immense all the English into me like naturally more than just pay attention to the video Q: What are the disadvantages of YouTube as a language learning tool? Explain, give examples INTERVIEWEE 1: YouTube can be quite addicted For example, last week I found out about the musical [inaudible] and I spent like half of the day watching everything from it like interviews and stuffs, so I didn't my school works So, it can quite be a big downfall of YouTube INTERVIEWEE 3: I think that one of the way it could be disadvantages that you only learn it very casually, it kind of help you be fluent in speaking but if you apply that in your writing, it would not be very so-called advanced In writing, we also learn a lot of like structure devices that if you say that in a spoken form, it would be a lot confusing 14 So, I think if we take whatever we learn from listening, it cannot be applied through more academic form like writing INTERVIEWEE 4: Because there are many genres on YouTube and as well as many accents on YouTube so basically for the beginners they will be very confused when they first connect to YouTube as learners so they have to learn some of the guidance videos for them to understand how YouTube works and how it can help them to learn something Q: Do you feel that your English have improved by watching YouTube? If so, why? INTERVIEWEE 1: I think watching English has helped me a lot First like in the first year I was every time I wanted to speak in English, it took me like a lot of time to think of what I want to say like organize the ideas and thinking and coming up with the words It took me a lot of time and my speaking is also not as fluent as now after a while watching YouTube and using YouTube as a learning tool INTERVIEWEE 4: Yeah I think that my English has been improved a lot since I watched YouTube But it was only in the time I had exams, I haven't used YouTube a lot in several years so I think that YouTube has helped me a lot in my pronunciation as well as the information that I need for my presentation as well as it has improved the ability to listen and to point out the wrong pronunciation because on YouTube, they have like the automatically creates the subtitles and then when it automatically wrong and I can find out about it FOCUS GROUP 2: Q: How much time you spend on watching YouTube a day? (or a week) INTERVIEWEE 1: Actually, I just spend around half an hour to watch YouTube to practice listening English before I go to bed INTERVIEWEE 2: I usually use YouTube for about hour for listening and practicing speaking English Like by Ted channel or some other channel that I use to watch INTERVIEWEE 3: I usually spend an hour a day watching YouTube to practice my English, listening skill, and just for entertaining INTERVIEWEE 4: To be honest, I spend every hour after school to go on YouTube to watch 15 INTERVIEWEE 5: I sometimes spend my time on YouTube because, actually I learn English through Facebook like I watch videos on Facebook not YouTube Yes INTERVIEWEE 6: I usually watch YouTube hours a day to watch movie and listen to English My favorite channel is "It's okay to be smart" or "After school" Q: What are the contents you often watch on YouTube? INTERVIEWEE 1: When I watch videos on YouTube, I usually watch cartoons in English and some English of YouTubers who are interested in studying English well INTERVIEWEE 2: Based on my feelings and my mood that day, I can spend time hours and hours watching some of the cartoons, or Disney movies or some other movies that I want to watch, or some presentations from Ted presenters, based on my mood INTERVIEWEE 3: I usually watch educational channels, and the channels that provide the skill, the presentational skills, I have to design the PowerPoint, and I usually follow famous people that give me the positive talk INTERVIEWEE 4: Just like [INTERVIEWEE 2] it depends on my mood, feelings, that I just randomly watch YouTube and videos Maybe I find comedy videos easier for me to learn English Like you know PewDiePie? No? Subscribe to PewDiePie! Okay, it's just that INTERVIEWEE 5: Usually I don't watch American shows, but I watch Korean shows but they you know "After school club"? On that they speak English all the time so I can learn English from my idols and also my Korean idols Yes INTERVIEWEE 6: I have just said, I usually watch educational channels I prefer watching the topic about the history of things such as the history of cheese, or the history of something like that And besides, I also watch Chinese and Vietnamese movie to entertain Q: Do you think you can improve all your skills of listening to English but in a specific accent? INTERVIEWEE 5: Actually, because I watch the videos, in the program most of the idols they speak English in this show They come from an English-speaking country Yes I just listen to them, and also, I pay attention to the way that they use vocabulary and grammar Yes 16 Q: Because the movies on YouTube aren't really officialized so can you specify what kinds of movies that you watch? INTERVIEWEE 1: I usually watch cartoons and cartoons are usually available on YouTube, so I haven't been in such situation INTERVIEWEE 2: The same with what [INTERVIEWEE 1] said, I enjoy watching Disney movies or some kind of cartoons and there are many channels that already post them on YouTube and besides that you can watch some movies with English subtitles too Q: What you think of the potentials of YouTube as a tool for learning English? INTERVIEWEE 5: I think because I also watch videos they speak Vietnamese, but the subtitles are in English and you can learn English from that subtitles Not for speaking skill but for writing, maybe INTERVIEWEE 6: So, I think now YouTube is a tool for studying English because you can listen to the educational channels on YouTube That is one way of studying English on YouTube Q: What you think of the ways YouTube helps you improve English skills? INTERVIEWEE 1: I think that there are a lot of benefits that YouTube can bring to me As from my experience, my listening skill improved a lot when I try to watch English cartoons or English movies And my vocabularies are improving too INTERVIEWEE 2: We can learn their accents Like if you watch Disney movies, you can learn American accents from the characters If you watch many episodes, the accents will affect your speaking And besides, if you have the subtitles, you don't know the word, but if with subtitles, you can understand and know the word more INTERVIEWEE 3: Besides that, I think we also study the culture through the English videos You can learn about the cooking of a country, and where are the famous places of a country After you watch that, you will gain experience when you go abroad INTERVIEWEE 4: I think that after watching this video, you know, sometimes the content I watch, PewDiePie, he doesn't make specific content, he just says slang words, he says funny things that make me laugh After watching that, I feel like my action really changed a lot because… I think that it's because our ancestors are gorilla or monkey, how you say that… So basically, you can imitate the things that you watch or hear 17 After hearing or watching it for a long time, so after a long time like one or two hours, hearing people speak English, my actions changed like I can imitate what they speak Q: What are the disadvantages of YouTube as a learning tool? INTERVIEWEE 1: My ideas are similar to [INTERVIEWEE 6] because when I use YouTube to learn English, but you know the steps or the tips that the YouTubers share to you, they're very simple And somehow there's no curriculum for you to follow in the long term so I have to say that it's really hard for you to be really successful if you just learn English on YouTube INTERVIEWEE 4: I have one more thing, maybe it's beyond your question, but I think YouTube, I mean, if you learn English on YouTube, it's not really a good way for beginner because you know, they don't have lesson plan, they don't have the guide for you how to begin They just have videos speaking English, so you have to know the basics in English first, then you go on YouTube to improve your skills, all the skills, like that INTERVIEWEE 5: If we watch the videos in English and watch with subtitles in English, and the words, we don't know the meaning so, for me I used to suffer this So, at that time, I put my phone in my hands and when I watch the videos so I pause and then I check the dictionary for the meaning, so I feel a little bit like, it's not convenient Yes INTERVIEWEE 6: Besides the advantages, YouTube provides us, I think, one disadvantage is that you can be distracted Like when you watch an educational video and then you want to learn more, but you see a cartoon and you find it interesting then you just click on it and watch it Q: Are there any specific strategies that you specifically use when using YouTube to learn English? INTERVIEWEE 1: My strategy is I have several channels A channel for pronunciation, a channel for listening and speaking, and a channel for presentation, so I watch it respectively INTERVIEWEE 3: I usually subscribe to the reliable channels because maybe there are, I don't say all but there are some YouTubers that will give you false information So, we must consider what is the channel that is suitable and must be reliable 18 INTERVIEWEE 5: Actually, I watch videos in English on YouTube to entertain but because I learn about what the speaker speaks in daily life, the style, and that it's not the content in the book that we have learnt at school So, I learn about the way that people communicate in real life INTERVIEWEE 6: My strategy is you need to be patient when listening to an educational video like one video I will listen in times The first times is no subtitles, just listening, then the third one is listening with subtitles in English and then the last one is listening with subtitles in Vietnamese So, you can improve by that way 19 ...
