1 Using and to Connect Phrases

When you want to say two things about a subject, use the word and to

connect the verb phrases

And introduces additional information.

Example: Mr Hiramoto is 34 years old and is a sales manager for a

hospital equipment company

2 Using also to Add Information

When 2 sentences give similar ideas, you can use the word also in the second sentence Also usually goes before the main verb in the sentence, but it goes after the verb be

We use the caret symbol ( ^) in corrections to add something to a

sentence

Ex: She is very pretty She is very intelligent

She is very pretty She is also very intelligent.

@ Use also to add these sentences.

*PROCEDURE

- The topic sentence tells the main idea of the paragraph Don’t begin theparagraphs with “ I am going to write about………” or “ This paragraph

is about……….”

- The topic sentence

• gives the main idea of the paragraph;

• is always a complete sentence and has a subject and a verb;

• is often the first sentence in a paragraph , but is sometimes the second or even the last sentence

Ex: Topic : Write a paragraph about advantages and disadvantages of living far from home

Topic sentence: Living far from home has some advantages and disadvantages

*PROCEDURE

Transitional Words and Phrases help unify a paragraph They explain

the connection between two or more thoughts They often come at the beginning of a sentence

In addition is similar to and and also Use in addition when you are

adding information after a log sentence or after several sentences

Ex: People used to drink special teas to cure many illnesses Herbalists

made some of these teas from the bark of certain trees In addition, they

sometimes made a cream with certain kinds of bark to put on cuts and cruises

2 For example: giving examples

Use for example when you want to give specific examples.

Ex: Many people go to psychic healers For example, my cousin went

to a psychic healer who cured his high fever with the touch of her hands

3.However: giving contrasting information.

However is similar to but, but it often appears in more formal writing.
