This is a day for people of all levels of experience Our teachers will guide the beginners; more experienced artists can work in groups or by themselves

You don't need to bring any materials with you We'll provide everything that you need There will be enough paint, brushes, paper and card and modelling clay for everyone, as well as some new inks in an exciting range of colours

The price of the day is just five pounds per person to cover the cost of the materials

We suggest that you bring an apron to protect your clothes, or even better, that you wear some old clothes You don't want to get even a drop of ink on something special as these new inks that we will be showing you are permanent and impossible to wash out We also suggest that you bring a couple of bags or boxes to take your work home in

We look forward to seeing you on the 10th June Come along

and enjoy yourselves!

Hello My name's Theo Martin, and I'm going to talk to you

today about three of my paintings that are here at the

Skylight Gallery They're here for six weeks, then they'll be

going to a permanent collection in a gallery in Tokyo, Japan

I don't usually speak in public, but the owners of the Skylight

Gallery have asked me two or three times to give a short

presentation, so here I am today And it will be a short

presentation, I promise you! I have no intention of talking to

you for hours and hours about my paintings!

I'll start with this painting, 'Forest Green (One), I painted it

about two years ago from memory When I was a boy I used

to love a place called Dean Forest I hadn't thought about

Dean Forest for years Then, one day a few years ago, I was

walking in a wood in Canada and vivid memories of Dean

Forest suddenly came back to me 'As soon as I get back to

my studio I'm going to paint Dean Forest; I thought And

that's exactly what I did I didn't use photos I just painted

my memories onto the paper I've painted about fifteen other

paintings of Dean Forest, but this one is my favourite

This next painting is called 'Girl: It's a painting of my daughter

Libby I did it about 20 years ago, when Libby was six years

old She was sleeping on the sofa and I decided to paint her

Ten minutes later she woke up, got off the sofa and left the

room The moment had gone! But I finished the painting in the

studio I'd taken lots of photos of Libby, so I had pictures that I

could work from

Finally, I'll say a few words about this picture, 'Dots and Lines:

I painted this when I was at Art School more than 30 years

ago It stayed in a cupboard for many years, but recently it's

become one of my most famous pieces of work When it's in

the gallery in Tokyo it will have been in galleries in eighteen

different countries

I'll tell you some facts about 'Dots and Lines' It weighs 76kg

It has 50,000 red dots on it and 100,000 black lines And I'll tell

you a secret, too - I hate it! But other people like it, it seems

I don't understand why, but the painting has a life of its own

now, I suppose - and it doesn't need me any more!

Hi, I'm Heidi I'm a very experienced fitness coach and I'm going to tell you about some cardio-vascular activities-physical activities that are really good for your heart and lungs Are you bored with the usual suggestions for a good cardio-vascular work-out, like running and swimming? There are plenty of other things you can try, and here are three of them

The first is skipping Perhaps you remember jumping with a skipping rope with your friends when you were a child? Well,

these days, skipping's becoming more and more popular as

a fitness activity It's a great way to make your arms and legs stronger, and it's such a cheap and simple way to exercise too!

All you need is some space - preferably outdoors - and a skipping rope that's the right length If you stand on one e d

of the rope and pull it up, the handle should reach to your chest

There are different kinds of jumps and steps that you can try, and with a regular skipping programme you should find

yourself getting fit quickly A word of warning, though skipping is a high impact sport It isn't the best activity for

-people with weak knees or elbows

Spinning is another form of exercise that you could try This

is basically cycling on fixed bicycles in a gym with a group

of other spinners The instructor uses music and well-chosen

words to motivate you through the session A small computer

attached to the bike shows you how fast you're cycling and

how much energy you're using

Of course, spinning's never going to be as ex iting as cycling

outdoors in the fresh air, but the main adva tage is that the

instructor will guide you through a carefully planned routine

And, of course, it never rains at the gym, so yo 'll always be

able to go to your spin class!

Trang 31

The third activit\j \jou could tr\j is aqua - or water - aerobics

It's similar to traditional aerobics, in which \jou move in time

to music, but \jou do the class in a swimming pool The water

makes the movements more difficult, so \jou have to work

harder At the same time the movements are slower and

gentler than in a normal aerobics classes because the water

supports \jour bod\j For this reason, water aerobics is good for

an\jone who has problems with their knees and elbows

25 Prepositions of time, place and

B: No, it's Libb\j

A: No problem I'll call again at the weekend

B: OK B\je then

Here are the answers to the Natural World Quiz, so get read\j

to find out how man\j \jour team got correct

For the first three questions, we're thinking about continents According to scientific discoveries it seems that no horses lived

in Australia during the Ice Age, so Australia is the first answer There are deserts in ever\j continent except Europe And spiders - these live in ever\j continent except Antarctica, so if

\jou're not a fan of spiders then that's the place to live!

The next three questions are about losses to the natural world due to human activit\j Deforestation - cutting down large numbers of trees for industr\j - has resulted in the loss of some bird species, and some species of animals, too Some kinds of tiger have been lost for ever because of hunting, and in the future some species of shark ma\j become extinct because of overfishing - the food industr\j taking too man\j fish out of the

sea, in other words

You need a season and a time of da\j for the next two answers Turtles, like man\j animals, hibernate during the winter And most birds fl\j during the night when the\j are migrating, despite the fact that the\j usuall\j fl\j during the da\j at other times Tails, now, and we're thinking about what different animals use them for Now, some lizards use their tail as a weapon

to protect themselves against attackers And, of course, all fish use their tail as a propeller to help them swim, like the propeller at the back of a boat

How long do different animals live for? Chickens - about 20

\jears Rhinos - about 50 \jears And the Giant Tortoise - the\j often live until the\j're an amazing 150 \jears old

Finall\j - carnivores, herbivores and omnivores: what are the\j? Well, herbivores onl\j eat plants and carnivores onl\j eat meat

so ominvores is the answer to question 14: omnivores eat plants and meat

Most carnivores and omnivores have big teeth for eating meat, but things aren't alwa\js as the\j seem in the natural

world With their big teeth hippos look like carnivores but the\j are actuall\j herbivores And \jou wouldn't expect a plant to be

a carnivore, but the Venus Fl\jtrap is Its leaves are a bit like a mouth - the\j close when a fl\j walks on them, and the plant

'eats'the fl\j The final answer, then is carnivores, and that's the end of the quiz How man\j correct answers did \jou get?
