Hanoi Education & Training Department Thang Long High School LESSON PLAN Unit 13: Hobbies Part A: Reading Student Teacher: Nguyen Thi Oanh Teaching Practicum : at Class 11A3 Instructor: Ms Dao Thuy Hanh 1. Class Description: 54 Ss from class 11A3, 27 boys and 27 girls 2. Time: 45 ms 3. Objectives At the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to:  Reading comprehension: guessing meaning of words in contexts and scanning for specific information.  Speaking: talk in pairs and in group. 4. Anticipated problems Ss might not have enough sufficient vocabulary and structures to talk about the topic, T should be ready to provide some and give help if necessary. 5. Teaching Aids: textbooks, handouts, cards, pictures. 6. Procedure Stages Time Teacher’s Activities Students’ Activities Warm- up 7’ Hangman game -Divides the class into 4 big groups. Each group takes turn to say out one letter in a key word which the T thinks in her mind. If they give the correct one, T will write it down in the correct position, if they give the wrong answer, T will draw the head ( the arms, the body, the legs). If they are able to tell what the word is before the hanged man is draw, they win the game. Clues: - It is a noun - It is way to relax ourselves - It is related to free time - Collecting stamps, reading books, going fishing are examples for this noun. Key : HOBBY Lead in: The key word today is hobby. What does it mean in Vietnamese?(sở thích). Now, we are going to read more about some popular hobbies. -Work in groups. -Take turn and say out the letter. -Guess the words. Pre- reading 10’ - Ask students to look at the pictures on page 146 and call out the name of the hobbies described in the pictures (collecting stamp, keeping fish, playing chess, swimming, go fishing) - Teach Ss some new words by giving them some examples Accomplished: [ə'kɔmpli∫t] Accompanying: [ə'kʌmpəniη] Modest: ['mɔdist] Avid: ['ævid] Discarded: [dis’kɑ:did] Indulge in: [in'dʌldʒ] Keep me occupied: ['ɒkjʊpaied] - Help Ss to pronounce these words and ask Ss to read after - Call Some Ss to read these words - Check Ss’ understanding by giving them exercise - Look at the pictures and answer questions. -Take note on notebooks. -Read the words - Do Exercise to revise some words they have learnt. Exercise : Use these words in the box to fill in the blank Accomplished Accompanying Modest Avid Discarded Indulge in Keep me occupied 1. I’ll forget about dieting today. I’m going to ………….eating whatever I like. 2. He is an…………. musician. All his songs are very popular. 3. I love all fictions written by Shakespeare. I’m an …… collector of his works. 4. I spend most of my free time looking after these cats. They really……………………. 5. I do not like a big house in the centre. My only dream is to have a …………….little house on the outskirt. 6. My mother doesn’t need these old clothes anymore. They can be……………… 7. I love ……………….my mother on the organ. Key: 1. Indulge in 4. Keep me occupied 2. Accomplished 5. Modest 3. Avid 6. Discarded 7. Accompanying - Check the answer with the whole class. -Check the answers and write down on notebooks. While- reading 20’ Setting the scene: You are going to read a passage about a person’s hobbies. Then you do the task that follows Task 1: Instruction: You are required to read the text and do task 1. Decide whether the statements are true (T) of false (F). 1. The writer likes accompanying his uncle with his guitar. (F) 2. He is a talented guitarist. (F) 3. Keeping fish is one of his hobbies. (T) - Listen to teacher’s instruction carefully. 4. He is an avid collector of stamps (F) 5. His stamps are collected by buying from post office (F) 6. He gets more local stamps than foreign stamps (T) - Asks Ss to give some tips to do this task: + read the statement and underline the key words +go back to the passage and locate where the information appears +compare whether statement is right or wrong - Ask Ss to answer questions and explain their choices. - Gives the correct answers. Task 2: Answer the following questions. LUCKY NUMBER (2 & 5 are lucky numbers, right answers and lucky numbers are 10 marks. - Each group chooses a number and answers one question in turn. If the answer is right, they will get 10 marks. If the number they choose is lucky number, they can get 20 points. - Read the passage carefully and do the task 1. - Give some tips to do this task. -Answer the questions. -Check the answers with the teacher. -Listen to the game’s rules. - Work in groups Key: 1. His first hobby is playing his guitar. 2. No, he isn’t. 3. Because he’s an accomplished guitarist and he is good at accompanying people singing with his guitar. 4.His second hobby is keeping fish. 5. He bought some from the shop and collected some from the rice field near his house. 6. He is an avid stamp collector. 7. He collects them from discarded envelopes his relatives and friends give him. 8. Local stamps 9. He keeps the less common ones inside a small album. The common ones he usually gives away to others or if no one wants them, he simply throws them away. - Asks Ss to read the text again. - Asks Ss to work in group and answer the questions. - Asks Ss to give the reason if the answer is false. -Read the text. -Listen and take notes. -Answer T’s questions. Post- reading 8’ *Task: Speaking situation Student A: Suppose that you are a journalist. You are going to interview a famous person about his/her hobbies. Student B: You are a famous person. You are interviewed about your favorite hobbies. - Gives students A cards A and students B cards B. -Calls some pairs to come to the board and present. *Homework: Write a paragraph about your hobbies (120-150 words). -Work in pairs. -Discuss and share the ideas. -Present in pairs. .
