Link to standard textbook: A reading & vocabulary supplement for Unit 11. Difficulty level: Medium Time: 10 – 30 mins Option 1: Photocopies www.teachingenglish.edu.vn Page 2 Option 1: Photocopies Preparation: Make photocopies of the worksheet below for each group of students. (Alternatively, the worksheet can be downloaded here: link ) Stages Procedure Introduction 5 - 10 mins 1. Divide the class into 6 groups. Tell them that the 6 following things are all affecting the rainforests: Farming Fire Homes (Housing) Timber (Wood) Roads Mining & Oil Give one topic to each group and tell them that they have 3 minutes to brainstorm why. 2. Elicit whole class feedback and write their ideas up under the 6 headings on the board. Part A 5 – 10 mins 1. Hand out the worksheet to groups (preferably pairs) of students and direct them to Part A. Tell them to match the headings to the readings. 2. After a few minutes, check the answers as a whole class by eliciting them from the groups (i.e. you read out the heading and a nominated student reads out the matching half). (Note: The teacher might like to have a small whole class feedback about these things in Vietnam after each one). Answers: www.teachingenglish.edu.vn Page 3 Part B 5 – 10 mins 1. Direct the students to Part B and (in the same groups/pairs) ask them to un-jumble the sentences to work out how to protect rainforests. They should re-write the sentences in the small space provided on the worksheet. 2. After a few minutes nominate groups/pairs to read out their sentences aloud to check answers. (Note: The teacher might like to ask students how many of them do these things after each one). Answers: 1. Buy locally made products 2. Try to reuse and recycle products 3. Choose products that conserve energy 4. Look for products with minimal packaging 5. Support companies that reduce rainforest destruction. Part C 5 – 10 mins 1. Direct the students to Part C and (in the same groups/pairs) ask them to find 12 words related to rainforests. This is quite challenging. 2. The first group/pair to find all of the words is the winner. 3. Either check answers as a whole class or distribute the answer key below. Answers: www.teachingenglish.edu.vn Page 4 Variation 1. If there are time constraints, the teacher does not have to do all 3 parts of this worksheet. www.teachingenglish.edu.vn Page 5 Worksheet . level: Medium Time: 10 – 30 mins Option 1: Photocopies www.teachingenglish.edu.vn Page 2 Option 1: Photocopies Preparation: Make photocopies of the worksheet below for each group.
