Dear Viewers of The All New Getting Along in Japanese,
@Make the Most of Life in Japan!®
The number of people choosing to live in Japan for long periods of work or study is on the rise For this reason, we have designed our program to introduce you to the expressions neces- sary to form good relations at work, at home, and in your community as you express your feel-
ings to those around you in the best way possible
@Learn How to Speak to Superiors, Too! @
Our series features two kinds of skits: one for talking with people you are on close terms with, and one for talking to superiors or people you don t know well
In both skits, the expressions are colloquial ones used daily in the home, workplace, and community, so we feel certain that they will be of use to you in your everyday lives
@Learn in Japanese & 4 Other Languages! @
This series will be presented primarily in Japanese, with major points and expressions ac- companied by subtitles in Chinese, English, Korean, and Portuguese
Explanations in the textbook have also been translated into these four languages, so please use them to prepare and review for the televised lessons We also hope that you will take ad- vantage of the appendix to the text, in which we have compiled grammar points you Il want to
be sure to know in order to master Japanese
It is our sincere hope that this course will be able to play at least some small part in making your lives in Japan even more enjoyable and rewarding
NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation) April 2005 *Please note that due to space constraints, not all information appears in all of the languages
The All New Getting Along in Japanese
The All New Getting Along in Japanese is a program for people living in Japan whose native language is not Japanese The series will teach you the expressions and kanji that you need to know as you go about your work and life in the local community In designing the content of the program, we conducted interviews of foreign nationals actually living in Japanese commu- nities to find out what kinds of expressions they need to know in what kinds of situations and also to establish what might have been missing from their previous Japanese educational expe- riences The content of our program reflects the results of these surveys
The educational focus of our program will be the following two points:
@ Learning what kinds of expressions to use with what kinds of people in what kinds sit- uations in order to establish good relations with those around you
@) Learning how to express your feelings in Japanese in such a way that others will under- stand
The main character in our program s skits is a woman married to a Japanese man, but the key expressions she uses can be used regardless of your gender Additionally, in such segments as Kanji in Daily Life and Word of the Day, we hope we have come up with visually enter- taining ways to learn We will also be introducing cultural information relevant to daily life
through articles in the textbook
We hope that you will discover a wealth of information for your life in Japan and that you will enjoy your half-year of study with us

From the Teacher to You
This marks the beginning of our brand new series for learning Japanese! I hope we can all have an enjoyable time learning together!
First, allow me to introduce Anna, the main character of our series She will act as your alter
ego Anna has been living in Japan for three years, but she has only recently begun living under
the same roof as her mother-in-law Her mother-in-law is a very nice person, but Anna is still
careful around her because she is not used to her yet Anna has also just started a part-time job at a restaurant, and she wants to form good relationships with her boss and new co-workers as well She is also doing her best to create good relations with the teachers at the nursery school
her child attends, with the mothers of the other children, and with her husband’s colleagues
Because she is intent on growing accustomed to life in Japan, she has also decided to learn the tea ceremony from her mother-in-law’s friend
How will Anna go about forging relationships with the other characters around her? We will see her use different kinds of expressions depending on the situation and the person she is deal- ing with as she asks questions, greets people who help the members of her family, gives gifts, thanks people, shows interest in their stories, compliments them, and so on Please be sure to put yourself in Anna’s shoes as you learn the key expressions she uses in the Basic and Ad- vanced Skits Lessons 4 and 8 will be special weeks in which we learn to express ourselves in difficult situations such as when we are angry or displeased with someone close to us Please
stay tuned!
