The world is increasingly exploding in computer networks, people can quickly communicate and connect more easily through many types of internet services This is a favorable condition for the e-commerce sector to develop more and more E- commerce has become a remarkable trend and strongly shapes the future of shopping and business With the advancement of technology and the popularity of the internet, e-commerce is not only a convenient means of shopping but also a door that opens up many new opportunities and development potential For consumers, e-commerce helps save time and easily compare prices and quality of many suppliers at the same time E-commerce is the bridge connecting all suppliers with consumers around the world

In group 2's discussion on the topic "Advantages and disadvantages of e-commerce for consumers”, we will learn more deeply about the definition of e-commerce, how it works, its benefits and disadvantages for consumers Thereby, we can clearly see the importance of e-commerce for consumers, thereby having multi-dimensional perspectives

1 What is E-commerce

1.1 Meaning of E-Commerce

Currently, there are many definitions of e-commerce that have been set According

to the WTO definition: -commerce includes the production, distribution, marketing, sale “E

or delivery of goods and services by electronic means.”

In Vietnam, there is also a Government decree on e-commerce, which is: "E- commerce activities are the conduct of part or all of the process of commercial activities

by electronic means connected to the Internet, mobile telecommunications networks or other open networks."

For many consumers today, e-commerce is understood in a narrower sense: buying and selling goods and services through electronic means and the Internet These transactions include all activities such as trading, buying and selling, payments, ordering delivery, etc

If we talk about a typical example of e-commerce, we can mention Amazon - the largest online retailer in the world and continuing to grow extremely strongly In Vietnam, Shopee is the e-commerce platform with the largest market share in the market, with the highest number of visitors today

1.2 How E-Commerce Works

There are 6 basic types of e-commerce: Business to Business (B2B), Business to Customer (B2C), Customer to Customer (C2C), Customer to Business (C2B), Business to government (B2G), Customer to Government (C2G)

To see more clearly how e-commerce works, we will compare it with traditional commerce, from there we will see the characteristics of how e-commerce works according

2 Advantages of E-commerce for consumers

E-commerce has never been more popular than it’s now and it brings the most benefits to consumers, with data showing that about 2.14 billion people globally will shop online in 2021 And the total amount of money spent on e-commerce is increasing, with studies showing that this number is increasing every year So let's analyze some of the advantages of e-commerce for consumers used to better explain the above phenomenon: 2.1 Convenience

E-commerce brings lots of benefits which attract many customers The first convenience to mention is rich and up- -date information: Customers can easily find to information quickly and easily through search tools and online shopping applications such

as Shopee, Tiki, Lazada, At the same time, multimedia information (audio, image) on websites and social networks, you can easily find the item you need without putting any effort

Second, online shopping helps consumers save a lot of time, they just need to sit in one place, choose the item they need, and press the buy button to be able to own it They can save time going to the store to choose, park and pay, etc Online shopping helps them spend more time doing other things

In addition, because there is no cost to rent premises and sales staff, the prices of products and services on e-commerce platforms are often lower than traditional ones, and consumer psychology prefers affordable items Being cheap also requires quality, so this advantage is indispensable

Besides, purchasing anytime, anywhere helps customers overcome geographical limitations You can order an item from abroad without having to go to their store to pay, because there is payment by credit card, bank account, also without having to come to check the quality because the delivery service will let you check directly at home And it also helps customers overcome the limitation of shopping space, Tiki has advertising saying "No need to go far because Tiki is home" When shopping at supermarkets or large dealerships, you often have to wait to pay, the space is cramped and stuffy, and the surrounding noise makes customers uncomfortable when making purchases

2.2 Many choices of products and services

When it comes to e-commerce, people will immediately think of a world of goods, where there is a variety of products and services, consumers can freely choose goods that suit their budget and choose the best items for their family because e-commerce is a gathering place for many different goods suppliers Consumers can choose a supplier that suits their needs, preferences, and finances For example, on Shopee there are all kinds of items from food, cosmetics, clothes, shoes, phone accessories, online department stores, online bookstores, etc., and many other products and services essential for consumers Therefore, Shopee attracts a large number of customers: up to more than 160 million people according to statistics by 2022 and this number does not stop there and increase s every second and every minute The products on Shopee are very diverse, such as fresh milk, with many designs, colors, functions, prices, etc., so customers can freely choose according

to their needs For that reason, suppliers are constantly innovating to match and follow consumer trends

Thus, it is impossible to deny the importance of e-commerce in recent times, especially its role for society and consumers E-commerce makes society increasingly develop and through it, customers in many regions can easily access and purchase products and services At the same time, e-commerce also helps narrow the space and time gap between product and service providers and a large number of customers These are not small benefits that e-commerce brings to businesses and the whole of society, promoting economic development and especially consumers around the world

2.3 Prices are usually lower than traditional types

An e-commerce business does not have to rent or pay to maintain a physical storefront and make it appealing to customers Some stores do not pay for renting premises, store design costs, paying salaries to many employees, etc That makes the price of the product not expensive compared to products displayed outside the door For example, a shirt purchased online costs $20, but this one in a store will cost 30$ or more, after adding in the costs of maintaining the product

In the same industry or product, there are many stores selling it on one e-commerce platform, not limited by geographical distance That requires sellers to have a cheap and reasonable price to attract buyers, as well as to compete with other competitors The human tendency is to buy cheaper items of the same quality For example, if there are many stores

on an e-commerce platform offering the same image for the same product, consumers will

be interested in which side has the cheaper price to decide to buy

c Many promotional programs

When going through many similar stores and products on the e-commerce platform, cheap prices are part of the decision of consumer behavior In addition, consumers will like

it more if the product has promotions or product subsidies Many big brands, with business partners, also offer many promotions to advertise and sell more products That makes products more popular and cheaper than before

2.4 Receive vouchers when shopping

On special occasions, when buying online, in addition to product discounts, stores will give additional product promotion vouchers or sales discounts or buy one get one free Thus, buying online helps buyers save more costs and money than buying directly In addition, online shoppers will get additional free shipping vouchers Therefore, buyers can shop anywhere without worrying about price or delivery fees For example, on e- commerce platforms like Shopee, there will often be vouchers such as 30% off an order for fashion or beauty products Customers can use that voucher immediately on their order and receive a 30% discount deducted from the total order

Thus, the price is not only cheaper when competing between sellers but also offers deeper discounts when ap plying for vouchers On the Lazada e-commerce platform, there

is also a 20% refund voucher when making purchases For example, when you complete

an order to buy a product, you will be refunded 20% of that order value via electronic coins and you will use coins to pay for your next orders

Online shopping helps buyers save time and effort by going to the store to choose goods As online shopping becomes popular, the infrastructure system will develop, meeting the need for delivery to everywhere consumers want The shipping of goods is getting faster and faster, helping buyers not have to wait a long time In addition, there are many express delivery programs for customers who need products urgently Nowadays, the busier work is, the less time people have to go shopping, so saving time on buying and receiving goods will make online shopping more convenient Therefore, instead of spending time going to the store to shop, jostling through traffic jams, and wasting money

on ingredients, you can sit anywhere and place an order, and in a short period of time, the order will be delivered It will be delivered to you without any cost For example, when you shop at Shopee, you can receive "Free Shipping" vouchers, so you can just pay for your order without additional shipping costs, no matter where you are

3 Disadvantages of E-commerce for consumers

3.1 E-commerce is not able to see and feel the product

The biggest disadvantage of e-commerce is that people cannot see and feel the product Since the consumer cannot feel and touch the product and hence the business is trusted and since the business is mainly limited to travel, automobiles, PCs, services, books, and CD entertainment When not selling apparel, food products largely account for a small percentage of the total e-business For shoppers who want to see and touch products in person (especially physical products like clothing, shoes, and beauty products), e-commerce often does not allow trying on items before you receive the goods

Online images don't necessarily represent the entirety of an item, so e-commerce purchases can be frustrating when the product received doesn't match the consumer's expectations For example, an item of clothing may be made from poorer fabric than its online image shows

3.2 Online payment problem

Due to the specific nature of e-commerce, such as buyers and sellers do not meet face

to face and only communicate online, fake and counterfeit goods have appeared more and more online stores in The common trick is to use images of real, genuine goods to advertise and offer for sale at much cheaper prices than genuine stores and sales addresse
