inappropriate and harmful content Teenager and social networks have been the subject of research by many medical experts in recent years In addition to its benefits, there are signs that social media also poses a serious risk of harm to the mental health and well-being of children and young people.

Therefore, we chose this topic for discussion to learn more about some causes, impacts and solutions as well as give warnings about the alarming negative effects of social network addiction on today's teenagers.

CHAPTER 1: GENERAL THEORY OF SOCIAL NETWORKS1.1.Basic definitions of social networks.

Social networking is a dedicated online platform to create and share content, contact, interact and collaborate with like-minded individuals, peers, friends and family The first social networking platforms were created in the late 1990s, with the most popular sites appearing on the internet in the early to mid-2000s Popular social networking sites - such as Facebook, Zalo, Instagram and TikTok - enable individuals to maintain social connections, stay informed and access, as well as share, a wealth of information These sites also enable marketers to reach their target audiences Some of the most popular social media platforms today include Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat,

and Twitter Different platforms operate in unique ways, with their own features, interface designs, and social etiquette For example, Instagram is a primarily picture-based platform, while Twitter users must compose their content within a constraint of 280 characters or less.

1.2.Social network in Vietnam.

In the past few years, social media has become integrated into the daily life of most Vietnamese alongside Vietnam’s increasing smartphone and internet penetration rates.

Vietnam has a population reaching close to 100 million people, with the number of social network users amounting to around 66 million in 2023 In 2023,

approximately 84 percent of Vietnamese internet users used Facebook, making the international platform the leading social media channel in the country At the same time, Zalo, a local messaging app, has consistently been the second most popular social network surpassing other global players such as YouTube and Instagram.

The popularity of social media platforms varies from generation to generation While Facebook and Zalo have the highest preference among Gen X, Gen Z has a significantly higher usage of international networks, including Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram Additionally, TikTok is gaining momentum among the youngest generation of social media users in the country, with over 70 percent of the internet users in this age group reported being active on this platform as of the first quarter of 2023.

1.3.Social network addiction.

Overusing social media can be a serious problem Social media addiction is a psychological condition that compels someone to be overly concerned about social media, spending so much time on these platforms that it impacts other aspects of their life.

If you have a social media addiction, you may feel an uncontrollable urge to log on to these sites multiple times per day You may devote so much time and energy to post and engage with other users that you neglect to take care of yourself In some cases, you may engage in risky behaviors in order to gain attention on social media.

You may also notice that you begin to use social media more and more as time goes on, developing a tolerance to your usual consumption When you stop using social media, you may experience unpleasant withdrawal symptoms until you can log on again

CHAPTER 2 THE REALITY OF YOUNG'S SOCIAL NETWORKS ADDICTION2.1 Current status of young's use of social networks.

With the strong development of science and technology, the appearance of more and more social networking sites has had a great impact on all areas of human activities and activities, especially young people Besides many utilities, social networking sites have also caused bad and unpredictable consequences.

In recent years, along with the development of society, information technology in general, social networking sites in particular, especially the Internet has developed very strongly, it has been greatly affecting (both positively and negatively) all activities and activities of people, especially young people With outstanding characteristics of fast connection, wide sharing, just a phone or a computer connected to the Internet, we can access and participate in many websites such as Facebook, Zalo, Youtube, Twitter Although the purpose, way, and level of participation in social networking sites vary from person to person, one thing in common is to see it as an integral part of people's spiritual life.

So, the lifestyle of social media addiction has become popular and rejuvenated in the last few years The current situation can explain that.

The 2022 statistics show that:

- Up to 95% of teens use YouTube and 19% use YouTube 'almost constantly' - 67% of teens use TikTok, 62% use Instagram, and 59% use Snapchat - 46% of teenagers use the Internet 'almost constantly'.

- 36% of teens admit they spend “too much” time on social media - 32% of teenagers use Facebook, 71% in 2014-2015.

In addition, according to the UNICEF report, 83% of children aged 12 – 13 use the Internet This figure rises to 93% at the age of 14-15 years.

According to a survey by the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, the time children use social networks is from 5-7 hours/day; and only 36% of children, most of them aged 16-17, are taught about ensuring online safety.

Also, a study by Ho Chi Minh City University of Education showed that 10-12% of 3rd grade students have been exposed to the Internet.

Now, students of all levels are exposed to the Internet and the age is increasingly being rejuvenated while not equipped with the necessary knowledge about network safety.

According to a study by a team of experts from the University of Education, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, 31% of middle and high school students are bullied online

The virtual world with anonymous function has created conditions for uncivilized and non-standard behaviors Inadvertently, it has created an unhealthy learning and development environment for children, seriously affecting their spirit, personality and actions in the future.

2.2 The causes of young's social network addictionPersonal dissatisfaction, depression and lack of affection:

One of the main causes of social media addiction among young people is personal dissatisfaction, depression and lack of affection According to a survey by the Vietnam Internet Association, 67% of young social media users reported feeling unhappy with their appearance, 54% felt insecure about their relationships, and 48% suffered from stress and anxiety These psychological problems make young people seek acceptance and attention from others through likes, comments and shares on social media

Boredom and life stress:

Another cause of social media addiction among young people is boredom and life stress Many young people in Vietnam face difficulties and challenges in their studies, work and family, such as high expectations, competitive pressure, financial problems, and domestic violence Social media is an effective entertainment and emotional outlet for them, as it provides them with various content, games, and online communities to enjoy and express themselves

Desire to escape from reality:

A third cause of social media addiction among young people is the desire to escape from reality Many young people in Vietnam feel restricted and forced in their

real life, as they have to follow the norms and rules of their society, culture and family, such as respecting elders, obeying parents, and pursuing certain careers Social media offers them a virtual world, where they can create and explore their own identities, interests, and fantasies, without being judged or constrained by others

Fear of being left behind or outdated:

The final cause of social media addiction among young people is the fear of being left behind or outdated Social media is a place to connect and update information about friends, the world and new trends Many young people in Vietnam are afraid that if they do not participate in social media, they will miss out on important news, events, and opportunities, and lose contact with their peers They also want to keep up with the latest fashions, technologies, and lifestyles, which are often influenced by social media influencers and celebrities However, this can also make them addicted to social media, as they constantly check and refresh their feeds, messages, and notifications, and feel anxious and dissatisfied if they do not receive enough attention or feedback

- Living in a virtual world, spending excessive amounts of time and money on social media apps and games For example, a person with social media addiction may spend a lot of money on social media apps and games They may also spend too much time playing these games, causing them to neglect other responsibilities in life
