hợp thực hiện: Thạc sĩ Võ Thị Thủy Chung Thời gian thực hiện: 01/2020 – 12/2020 Mục tiêu Đề tài thực nhằm mục đích tìm hiểu nhận thức giảng viên sinh viên chuyên ngành Quốc Tế Học việc sử dụng tiếng Anh làm phương tiện dạy học môn chuyên ngành (EMI), đồng thời khám phá thực trạng việc áp dụng EMI Khoa Quốc Tế Học, trường Đại học Ngoại ngữ, Đại học Huế Cụ thể, nghiên cứu tập trung vào nhận thức thái độ giảng viên sinh viên tầm quan trọng chương trình EMI, thuận lợi thách thức việc áp dụng EMI phương pháp giảng dạy đánh giá nội dung chuyên môn lớp EMI Nội dung Nghiên cứu tiến hành dựa kết hợp phương pháp nghiên cứu định lượng phương pháp nghiên cứu định tính để tìm hiểu nhận thức thực trạng giảng viên sinh Khoa Quốc Tế Học, trường Đại học Ngoại ngữ, Đại học Huế Để thu thập liệu định lượng, khảo sát với tham gia 80 sinh viên với câu hỏi thiết kế tập trung vào vấn đề tầm quan trọng lợi ích EMI, thuận lợi khó khăn trình áp dụng EMI phương pháp giảng dạy đánh giá nội dung chuyên môn thông qua EMI Bên cạnh đó, để tìm hiểu rõ nhận thức, thái độ giảng viên sinh viên tình hình thực tế việc áp dụng EMI, vấn chuyên sâu tiến hành với đồng ý tham gia giảng viên Khoa Quốc Tế Học sinh viên tham gia khảo sát Kết đạt Kết từ khảo sát vấn cho thấy phần lớn giảng viên sinh viên chuyên ngành Quốc Tế Học có thái độ tích cực việc sử dụng tiếng Anh làm phương tiện (EMI) giảng dạy nội dung chuyên môn Khoa Quốc Tế Học, trường Đại học Ngoại ngữ, Đại học Huế Tất giảng viên phần lớn sinh viên tham gia nghiên cứu nhận thức tầm quan trọng EMI bối cảnh tồn cầu hố lợi ích đáng kể mà EMI mang lại tổ chức giáo dục thân người học Đối với tổ chức giáo dục, việc áp dụng chương trình EMI chiến lược giúp nâng cao vị trường tăng cường hoạt động giao lưu, hợp tác quốc tế với tổ chức khác giới Đồng thời, chương trình giảng dạy tiếng Anh đem lại lợi việc thu hút sinh viên nước đến theo học Đối với thân người học, chương trình EMI tin giúp họ cải thiện trình độ tiếng Anh thân, phát triển chuyên mơn tốt mở nhiều hội có việc làm sau tốt nghiệp Chính vậy, số lượng lớn sinh viên bày tỏ hài lòng cao mong muốn tiếp tục theo học chuyên ngành Quốc Tế Học tiếng Anh Ngoài ra, kết nghiên cứu cịn góp phần phản ánh thực trạng việc áp dụng EMI chuyên ngành Quốc Tế Học Khoa Khoa Quốc Tế Học thông qua việc tìm hiểu thuận lợi khó khăn việc giảng dạy nội dung chuyên ngành tiếng Anh Nhìn chung, việc áp dụng EMI tiến hành thuận lợi đáp ứng điều kiện then chốt định đến thành công chương trình trình độ tiếng Anh giảng viên đủ tốt để giảng dạy môn chuyên ngành tiếng Anh, phần lớn sinh viên có khả tiếng Anh đủ tốt để tham gia chương trình nguồn tài liệu tham khảo tiếng Anh đa dạng cập nhật thường xuyên Tuy nhiên, việc áp dụng EMI gặp phải khó khăn định chênh lệch trình độ tiếng Anh sinh viên gây cản trở đến chất lượng dạy học môn chuyên ngành Một phận nhỏ sinh viên cho khả tiếng Anh chưa tốt ảnh hưởng tiêu cực đến việc tiếp thu kiến thức chun mơn Ngồi ra, sinh viên cho lượng từ vựng chuyên ngành tiếng Anh nhiều phức tạp gây cản trở đến việc theo học lớp EMI Bên cạnh thuận lợi khó khăn này, kết từ nghiên cứu giúp hiểu rõ phương phương pháp giảng dạy cách thức đánh giá nội dung chuyên môn lớp EMI Phát thú vị sử dụng kết hợp hai ngôn ngữ tiếng Anh tiếng Việt lớp học EMI nhằm giúp sinh viên, đặc biệt đối tượng có trình độ tiếng Anh chưa tốt hiểu nắm kiến thức tốt Tuy nhiên, tiếng Anh phương tiện sử dụng hầu hết giảng EMI tiếng Việt công cụ bổ trợ lúc cần thiết Để tạo hứng thú học tập giúp sinh viên tiếp thu kiến thức tốt hơn, bên cạnh lối thuyết giảng truyền thống, giảng viên Khoa Quốc Tế Học thường xuyên tổ chức hoạt động dạy học đa dạng trò chơi, câu đố, thảo luận hay thuyết trình theo nhóm Bên cạnh đó, việc ứng dụng công nghệ thông tin giảng dạy nhận nhiều phản hồi tích cực từ người học Khi nói đến hình thức đánh giá nội dung chun mơn, kết nghiên cứu cho thấy có nhiều hình thức khác áp dụng thuyết trình nhóm, làm kiểm tra đầu vào tiếng Anh, làm kiểm tra trình với nhiều hình thức trắc nghiệm tự luận tuỳ theo đặc điểm mơn học Tuy nhiên, có điểm chung tất hình thức ngơn ngữ sử dụng để đánh giá hoàn toàn tiếng Anh Tóm lại, từ kết trên, nhận thấy việc sử dụng tiếng Anh làm phương tiện giảng dạy nội dung chuyên ngành cịn tồn cho số khó khăn định lợi ích đáng kể mà mang lại dường vượt trội Việc áp dụng chương trình EMI Khoa Quốc Tế Học, trường Đại học Ngoại ngữ, Đại học Huế nhận nhiều phản hồi tích cực từ giảng viên sinh viên nơi SUMMARY Project title: PERCEPTIONS AND PRACTICES OF ENGLISH - MEDIUM INSTRUCTION AMONG LECTURERS AND STUDENTS MAJORING IN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS AT International Studies about using English as a medium in teaching specialized subjects (EMI), and at the same time explore the current state of the application of EMI at the Faculty of International Studies, University of Foreign Languages, Hue University Specifically, the study focused on the perceptions and attitudes of lecturers and students about the importance of the EMI program Besides, the advantages and challenges in applying EMI together with teaching and assessment methods used in EMI classes were also investigated Main Contents This study was conducted based on a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods to investigate the awareness and practices of lecturers and students of the Faculty of International Studies, University of Foreign Languages, Hue University A survey was conducted with the participation of 80 third-year and fourth-year students to collect the quantitative data The questionnaire used for the survey focused on issues, including the importance and benefits of EMI, the advantages and disadvantages of EMI as well as teaching and evaluating methods in EMI classes Besides, in-depth interviews were conducted with a group of lecturers and students participating in the survey to explore their perceptions, attitude of EMI as well as the actual situation of EMI application Key findings The results from the survey and interviews showed that the majority of lecturers and students majoring in International Studies had a positive attitude towards the use of English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) in teaching professional content at the Faculty of International Studies, University of Foreign Languages, Hue University All lecturers and the majority of students participating in the research were aware of the importance of EMI in the context of globalization and the potential benefits that EMI brought to educational institutions and students themselves For educational institutions, the application of the EMI program was one of the strategies to help enhance the university's position and strengthen international exchange and cooperation activities with other organizations in the world At the same time, the English-taught program also brought advantages in attracting domestic and international students to study there For learners themselves, one of the great benefits of EMI was to help them improve their English proficiency Besides, it would likely foster their professional development and open up more employment opportunities after graduation Therefore, most students expressed their high satisfaction and desire to continue studying International Studies in English In addition, the research results also reflected the current situation of applying EMI to the major of International Studies at the Faculty of International Studies, University of Foreign Languages, Hue University through exploring the advantages and difficulties in teaching specialized content in English In general, the application of EMI there was proceeding fairly smoothly because it satisfied certain basic requirements that determined the success of this program Firstly, the English proficiency of the lecturers was good enough to teach specialized subjects in English, and many students had a good command of English to participate in this program Moreover, teaching and learning resources in English were relatively diverse and regularly updated However, the application of EMI there also faced particular difficulties, such as the difference in English proficiency of students which hinders the quality of teaching and learning specialized subjects Some students thought that the low level of English proficiency would negatively affect the acquisition of professional knowledge Moreover, these students also believed that the excessive and complicated amount of specialized vocabulary in English also hindered them from taking EMI classes In addition to these advantages and disadvantages, the results from the research also revealed the teaching methods and assessment methods of professional content in EMI classes The most striking finding was the combination of English and Vietnamese languages in EMI classes to help students, especially those with low English proficiency, understand the lesson contents and gain more knowledge However, English was still the medium of instruction used most in EMI lectures To arouse learners’ interest in learning and help them absorb knowledge more effectively, besides adopting a lecture-based instructional approach, lecturers of the Faculty of International Studies regularly organized various teaching activities such as games, quizzes, classroom discussion, and group presentation Besides, the application of information technology in teaching also received many positive feedbacks from learners Concerning the form of assessment of professional content, research results showed that there are many different forms used, such as group presentations, English language entrance proficiency tests, or achievement tests It is interesting to note that that the language used for assessment was entirely English In summary, from the above results, it can be stated that although the use of English as a means of teaching specialized content still encountered particular difficulties, the enormous benefits that it brought seemed to be superior The application of the EMI program at the Faculty of International Studies, University of Foreign Languages, Hue University had received positive feedbacks from both lecturers and students there
