academic essays in terms of teachers' and students’ perspectives and the reality in English Department, Hue University of Foreign Languages It was conducted with an eye to detect the opinions about the influence of these two types of words during writing essays included both advantages and disadvantages The argument is applied to analyze the reasons and factors that affected the writing process to address the convoluted issues that emerged during the research Then, the solutions also were explored to fulfill the gap of these issues In this study, there were participation of 24 English Writing teachers and more than 300 third-year English-majored students of Hue University of Foreign Languages Data collection was carried out in both quantitative and qualitative methods with instruments including questionnaires, content analysis (mid-term test essays), and interviews Research findings indicate that compound and complex words impact positively on idea expression, strengthening grammar, showing writing styles and academic writing features in the essays written by the students The teachers also share the same opinions The discussion issue that emerged from the findings is the relationship between students’ having theoretical knowledge about compound and complex word formation and applying it in writing essays This relationship involves many factors significantly resulted from the writing process The study implies both teachers and students’ awareness of the role of compound and complex words in writing essays, and what to to improve the use of these two types of words particularly in writing ii TĨM TẮT KHĨA LUẬN Khóa luận trình bày việc sử dụng từ ghép từ phức viết học thuật sinh viên góc nhìn từ giáo viên, sinh viên, thực tế, khoa tiếng Anh trường Đại học Ngoại ngữ Huế Khóa luận tiến hành với mục đích tìm thuận lợi khó khăn sử dụng hai loại từ q trình viết luận Trên khía cạnh sử dụng từ phức từ ghép, khoá luận nêu vấn đề thảo luận liên quan đến việc sinh viên học lý thuyết cấu tạo từ áp dụng lý thuyết viết luận Khóa luận tiến hành với tham gia 24 giáo viên dạy viết 300 sinh viên năm thứ chuyên ngành tiếng Anh trường Đại học Ngoại ngữ Huế Việc thu thập liệu tiến hành theo hai phương pháp định lượng định tính, thơng qua cơng cụ bảng khảo sát, phân tích viết luận kỳ vấn Kết khảo sát cho thấy từ ghép từ phức ảnh hưởng tích cực đến việc diễn đạt ý tưởng, củng cố ngữ pháp, thể văn phong đặc tính học thật văn viết luận sinh viên Hầu hết tất giáo viên đồng quan điểm với kết Từ kết nghiên cứu, nhận thấy vấn đề cần thảo luận
