18TA Page INTERNSHIP REPORT INTRUCTOR: M.A.Nguyen Thi Xuan Binh The functions of organizational structure of iSEE English Center: 3.1 Director: is responsible for managing all activities of the center such as managing and recruiting human resources, proposing a business strategy and so On 3.2 Teaching organizing courses, Department, managing including classes, three arranging staff, is responsible classrooms and for announcing information related to learner’s study and exam Beside these staff, there are 14 teachers in this department They are both Vietnamese teachers, who have more than five years of experience in teaching, foreign teacher, who comes from the Philippines, and has TESOL certificate and English for children and communication a lot of experience in teaching These teachers are divided into main following majors: 3.2.1 Common European Framework for Reference (A2, B1, B2, C1), including teachers teaching four English skills (listening, speaking, writing and reading) There are two groups of teachers, who are listening and speaking group and reading and writing group Teacher’s duties are taking on coaching learners for exams, designing, preparing lesson plans for each lesson and correcting learner’s homework 3.2.2 Teaching English Communication, including teachers teaching English for employees or high school students Teacher’s duties are taking on designing, preparing lesson plans for each lesson and correcting learner’s homework Nguyen Thi Huynh Nhu - 18TA Page 10 INTERNSHIP REPORT INTRUCTOR: M.A.Nguyen Thi Xuan Binh 3.2.3 English for Children, including teachers teaching English for children from age four to thirteen Teacher’s duties are taking on designing and preparing lesson plans for each lesson 3.3 Quality Control, including two main groups (English Quality Control group for learners studying for A2 — B1 examination and English Quality Control group for children), is responsible for preparing homework for learners, and then they check and correct these homework Moreover, they usually prepare and update demo tests for learners 3.4 Business Department is responsible for managing finance of the center, collecting tuition fee from learners, paying salary for employees and teachers, arranging the schedule for employees, writing advertisement content on fanpages of the 1iSEE English Center, designing posters and leaflets and organizing extra curriculum activities for children Nguyen Thi Huynh Nhu - 18TA Page 11 INTERNSHIP REPORT INTRUCTOR: M.A.Nguyen Thi Xuan Binh B INTERNSHIP ACTIVITIES, ATTAINMENTS, ADVANTAGES AND DISAVANTAGES I Internship activities: The first week: My member group and I had a first meeting with the director of iSEE English Center, who is Truong Thi Diep Mai, telling us main activities of the center and our main responsibilities when taking the internship in the center She appointed me to work with Mrs Thanh Phuong, the manager of English for Children major Besides of Mrs Phuong, I had an opportunity to work with Ms Mai as well Despite being busy, they still managed their time to help me get used to new environment working, what I needed to and how to I talked to my instructor at the iSEE English Center to know about my schedule And then, I spent two days finding out about work culture and activities of iSEE English Center In the third day of the first week, Mrs Mai told me to write a survey about English for Children in Long Xuyen city and I took two days to finish it When she read my survey, she commended that my survey was good, quite real and accurate However, I needed to write more essential information in new method teaching section My duty in the two last days of the first week was supporting my colleagues preparing questions for “English Challenge” program for children The second week In the two first days of the second week, I looked at the questions of “English Challenge” program, designed power point slides for this program Nguyen Thi Huynh Nhu - 18TA Page 12 INTERNSHIP REPORT INTRUCTOR: M.A.Nguyen Thi Xuan Binh In the next day, my instructor told me to think about how to interact to parents’ children because they always want to know what their children study about Therefore, my instructor told me to make a plan about how to have an interaction between the center and parents’ children And then, I had to study a lot of learning English websites and applications on the Internet Finally, I had an idea that I would prepare online homework on Google Document Each week, I would base on the knowledge children learned in whole week and design them into suitable exercises with each class The third week I tried designing some sample exercises for each class and gave them to my instructor so that she could consider and give me comment to fix them better It took me two days to get familiar with Google Document and finish draft exercises In the third day, I started to prepare the first online homework of the first week of March for children In the rest days of the week, I continued to prepare the second and third online homework of the first week of March for children The fourth week: In the first day, I collected three online homework of the first week of March, correct answers, mark and send the result of the first week to parent’s children In the next three days, I continued to prepare the online homework of the second week of March for children In the rest days, I also collected three online homework of the second week of March, correct answers, mark and send the result of the second week to parent’s children Nguyen Thi Huynh Nhu - 18TA Page 13 INTERNSHIP REPORT INTRUCTOR: M.A.Nguyen Thi Xuan Binh The fifth week I started new week by preparing the online homework of the third week of March for children In the rest days, I collected three online homework of the thirst week of March, correct answers, mark and send the result of the thirst week to parents’ children The sixth week As the previous week, I also prepared the online homework of the fourth week of March for children In the rest days, I collected three online homework of the fourth week of March, correct answers, mark and send the result of the fourth week to parent’s children The seventh week I continued preparing the online homework of the fourth week of March for children In the rest days, I collected three online homework of the fourth week of March, correct answers, mark and send the result of the fourth week to parent’s children The eighth week I continued preparing the online homework of the fourth week of March for children In the rest days, I collected three online homework of the fourth week of March, correct answers, mark and send the result of the fourth week to parent’s children Besides of my main duty, I took on delivering leaflets for enrolling summer courses for children at Binh Minh, Hoa Lan , Mai Vang and Hoa Sen kindergarten Nguyen Thi Huynh Nhu - 18TA Page 14 INTERNSHIP REPORT INTRUCTOR: M.A.Nguyen Thi Xuan Binh II Internship attainments: Knowledge: - I could use English skills such as listening, speaking, reading and writing skills into my working during the internship at iSEE English Center Moreover, I had an opportunity working with foreigner, which helped me practice my speaking and listening skills a lot - It is beneficial for me to know more knowledge about English for children such as how to select and prepare suitable exercises with different ages, children’s psychology when starting learning new language, the language stage development of children Skills: 2.1 Independent work skills When I was assigned the job of preparing questions for “English Challenge” program and online homework for all children’s classes, I extremely concentrated on finding out the way to finish my task in the best way I looked for questions on educational websites on the Internet and educational fanpages for kids on Facebook and considered to select suitable exercises for each age As a result, I helped a staff at the center compile a question system for “English Challenge” program, design power point slides related to the program and an online homework system on Google Document Nguyen Thi Huynh Nhu - 18TA Page 15 INTERNSHIP REPORT INTRUCTOR: M.A.Nguyen Thi Xuan Binh 2.2 Communication skills When communicated I was in the with a lot of people internship at such as my iSEE English manager, Center, I officers, teachers, students and student’s parents at the center In the first weeks of my internship period, I was scared of talking to others I only replied on the others by a smile, a nod or saying “Yes” After that, I found out the causes of ineffective communication, communication aspects, factors affecting communication and I tried to improve my communication skills by: Vv Practicing active listening VY Focusing on nonverbal communication vY Managing my emotions and express them appropriately in context Y Seeking my peers or subordinates for their advice on improving my communication skills, which can help me better understand how I am coming across in my work environment Cultivate a willingness to seek out other points of view and forge better relationships with my coworkers V Learning the communication skills from manager and officer As a result, I learned a lot, practiced and applied the above methods into daily communication, and now I feel more confident to be able to communicate Nguyen Thi Huynh Nhu - 18TA Page 16 INTERNSHIP REPORT INTRUCTOR: M.A.Nguyen Thi Xuan Binh 2.3 Teamwork skills: When I was assigned to compile a question Challenge” program and prepare online homework system for “English on Google Document, my colleague and I did it together, respected each other's individual opinions and did a good job As a result, we were received the completely agreement from my manager after checking them 2.4 Time management skills This is a small part of the internship but I am so happy and think that it is very essential My manager said that the key to make a difference in every human being is the method of time management Ways manage time are: ¥ Making specific plans and details VY Noting the golden time frame works well Y Practicing discipline and concentration Y Getting started as soon as possible and never delay Y Determining the target that corresponds to the time of completion Y Organizing living space, work place neat and scientific v Not being work according to the inspiration Y Learning how to say no when necessary Nguyen Thi Huynh Nhu - 18TA Page 17 INTERNSHIP REPORT INTRUCTOR: M.A.Nguyen Thi Xuan Binh 2.5 Improving self — discipline I had a sense of discipline after the first week of the internship period Moreover, I always respected the discipline and followed regulations of iSEE English Center I went to the center on time and wore polite clothes when going to the center Furthermore, I always greeted and respected officers, teachers, students as well at the agency III Advantages and disadvantages during the internship at the iSEE English Center Advantages: 1.1 Working environment It is very lucky for me to have an opportunity spending internship period at iSEE officers, English teachers conscientious and They Center because students were English for children such as well I was They helped a lot by my are willing to share with me very kind, manager, friendly useful knowledge as websites related to English and about for kids, children’s psychology when starting new language, how to select appreciate exercises with each class working, and so on Also, which helps me they often made reduce comfortable atmosphere when stress of the internship In addition, some colleagues shared and helped to provide beneficial documents to complete my internship report The working environment at iSEE Language Center is professional, comfortable and friendly Here, I learned more skills, experienced jobs related to English for children and the remuneration for the staff are good Therefore, I did not feel pressured to work in the iSEE Englsh Center Nguyen Thi Huynh Nhu - 18TA Page 18 INTERNSHIP REPORT INTRUCTOR: M.A.Nguyen Thi Xuan Binh 1.2 Infrastructure Staff desks are located on the ground floor of the center The space is spacious and airy The agency equips fans and a full electrical system Green plants and some small fish pools are decorated near staff desks to create a comfortable working environment The office is fully equipped with essential tools and equipment to serve the job such as printers, photocopiers, scanners, computers and other related school supplies such as paper, pens, pencils, crayons, scissors, glue Disadvantages: Beside of the above advantages, there were some disadvantages that I had during the internship period at the iSEE English Center, particurlarly: e Lacking specialist knowledge for English for kids e Being not confident in communication with other people such as my manager at the agency, officers, teachers and children’s parents e Being not good at computer skills The reasons having the above problems and solution The reason why I had these troubles was that I only paid attention to learn specialist subjects and I did not care about knowledge of English for children Moreover, I thought that soft skills like communication skills and using computer skills were not significant, so I did not spend time to improve them for myself As a result, as soon as the first week of the internship period, I realized my previous thoughts were a big mistake Therefore, I found out efficient methods to Nguyen Thi Huynh Nhu - 18TA Page 19 INTERNSHIP REPORT INTRUCTOR: M.A.Nguyen Thi Xuan Binh overcome obstacles and difficulties Particularly, I spend time to study about English for children on the Internet, from my manager and colleagues at the agency Furthermore, I tried to use computer and talked to the others more than before Nguyen Thi Huynh Nhu - 18TA Page 20 INTERNSHIP REPORT INTRUCTOR: M.A.Nguyen Thi Xuan Binh C CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTIONS: I: Conclusion: The internship had given me a lot of interesting memories and meaningful experience I could use the knowledge that I had learned at university in real life After two months, I achieved lots of knowledge and skills Right now, I am grateful and confident in what I learned via the internship, which is a valuable motivation for me to work after graduation II: Suggestions: Suggestions for the iSEE English Center Besides of the advantages that the Center had given to my friends and me, I will have a suggestion should to make the internship better The Center consider allowing students to take part in the actual activities so that the student's internship has more opportunities to observe and learn from these activities Suggestions for An Giang University and Faculty of Foreign Languages To effectively create students attaining more smoothly and more in the internship for the upcoming years, I have a suggestion for An Giang University and the Faculty of Foreign Languages They should change the internship time so that students can learn more because they not need to come back to school for continuing to learn or subjects in a short time, should share the experience of the previous internship for the next course before taking the internship Nguyen Thi Huynh Nhu -
