SV 0104,2005-011,001 - , Summary HEAVY METALS C O N C E N T R A T I O N tN THE AGRICULTURAL SOILS A N D ITS RELATIONSHIP WITH A C C U M U L A T I O N IN POLISHED RICE IN THACH SON - L A M THAO - PHU THO Ngo Due Minh', Nguyen Manh Khai' Nguyen Cong Vinh', Pham Quang Ha^ Le Thi Thuy\ Ingrid Oborn' A study carried out in Thaeh Son commune Lam Thao district, Phu Tho province, where paddy soil is irrigated by wastewater from Chemical industnal factones more than 30 years In this study, heavy metals (As, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn) in 12 paires of paddy soil and relevant polished rice samples were investigated Comparing the Vietnam Standard for heavy metal concentrations in agricultural soils with the mean estimated heavy metals tn extracted by aqua regia iaq) solution, Cu,,,, Pb,, Zn,„ and As,,, concentration was already exceeded the MAC, espescially for Cu,„ 2n^,,, As,, In lower fields Cu_ and Zn , concentration of soils was higher by 53 and 4-10 times respectively than the MAC of the Vietnam Standard (TCVN 7209-2002) for Cu, Zn concentration in agricultural soils In adition As,,, concentration of soils in lower fields was also higher by 2-3 times than the MAC of TCVN 7209-2002 Beside, total Cd concentration of those soils was nearly the the MAC of the Vietnam Standard for Cd concentration in agricultural soils Heavy metals concentration of polished grain in extracted by HNO was regarded to be in a normal range for rice as comparing with Proposed Maximum Levels for Cd and Pb of FAO.WHO EC and with reference values from Japan and Taiwan However, Cd contenMau in 30% of the nee samples exceeded the FAO'WHO PM Levels (0 mg.'kg), and Cu contenMau in 50% of the rice samples also slightly exceeded Japan MAC for polished rice (2 mg,''kg) The relationship between polished rice and soil samples, in regards to heavy metal contenMau, was also discussed The correlation coefficienMau of heavy metals concentration between in soil with in nee are all positive and strong The correlation coefficient (R') of Cu, Zn As are higher than 0,7 and higher than for Pb and Cd The potential risk to the health of local inhabitanMau through the food chain should be evaluated in further studies Key words heavy metals, agricultural soil, polished rice, accumulation, concentration Soils and Fertilizers Research Institute ' Faculty of Environment Sciences -
