UNIT 9: FESTIVALS AROUND THE WORLD Lesson 1: Getting started I OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: Knowledge: Vocabulary: - Gain an overview about the topic “Festivals around the world” - Use lexical items related to the topic “Festivals”: names of different festivals around the world Custume, fireworks display, feast, float, folk dance, parade, decorate Competences: - Develop communication skills and cultural awareness - Be collaborative and supportive in independent work, pair work and teamwork - Actively join in class activities Qualities: - Develop self-study skills - Have positive attitude in English language learning so that they actively participate in all classroom activities - Know more festivals around the words and choosing the festival that they like II TEACHING AIDS Teacher: - Grade textbook, Unit - Getting started, lesson plan - Computer connected to the internet - Projector/ TV/ pictures and sets of word cards - Sachmem.vn Students: Text books, notebooks, posters, … III PROCEDURES: 1.Warm-up (5’) * Aim: - Activate students’ knowledge on the topic of the unit - Set the context for the listening and reading part * Content: Game: Kim’s game (about festivals around the world) and answer the questions * Products: Ss write words exactly on the board Teacher’s and Ss’activities Content * T asks Ss to look at the picture on page 93 in * Kim's game: 20 seconds and try to write the festivals they know as many words as possible - Easter - Teacher divides the class into two teams - folk dance - Ss go to the board and write the words - Firework play - Teacher gets feedback -> Today we are - Mid – Autumn festival - Thanksgiving going to learn some festivals around the world * Chatting * Teacher shows the picture of the Tulip Festival and asks students some related questions: What can you see in the picture? Can you guess the name of the festival? Have you ever heard of this festival? If yes, what you know about it? - Students raise hands to answer the questions Teacher and students discuss the questions Teacher accepts all students’ questions Presentation (5’) * Aim: Enrich students’ vocabulary to talk about festivals around the world * Content: Vocabulary about festivals * Products: Read and understand the meaning of words Teacher’s and Ss’activities Content Pre teach vocabulary - Teacher use different techniques to teach vocab (pictures, situation, realia) - Follow the seven steps of teaching vacabulary - Repeat in chorus and individually - Copy all the words * Vocabulary - Custume (n): Phong tục - Fireworks display (n) Bắn pháo hoa - Feast (n) : Bữa tiệc - Float (n) : Xe diễu hành - Folk dance (n) : Múa dân gian / điệu nhảy - Parade (n) : Cuộc diễu hành - Decorate (v) : Trang trí * Checking vocab: < Matching> Practice (27’) * Aim: - Introduce the names of festival topic - Ss know more vocabularies related to festival activities - Get specific information of the text - Check Ss’ knowledge of some familiar festivals * Content: - Listen and read - Read and tick the correct columns (Who did the activities?) - Write a word or phrase under each picture - Fill in the blanks with a word or phrase - Match each description with a festival * Products: - Ss listen and read, write words with the correct pictures Teacher’s and Ss’activities Content Task 1: (7’) Listen and read (T-Ss) Task 1: Listen and read - Teacher asks students to listen the topic “A Tulip Festival” - Teacher can play the recording more than once - Students listen and read in pairs - Teacher calls some pairs of students to read aloud - Teacher checks students’ pronunciation and gives feedback Task 2: (5’) Read the conversation again Who did the following activities? Tick (√) the correct culumn Sometimes you need to tick both (T - Ss, Ss – Ss) - - Teacher tells students to read the conversation again and work independently to find the words in Task to tick the correct columns - Students the task individually - Teacher allows students to share their answers before discussing as a class and encourages them to give evidence Teacher calls some students to give the answers and gives feedback Task 3: (5’) Write a word or phrase from the box under each picture (p.93) Game: Who is faster? (T-Ss, Ss-Ss) - Teacher divides the class into teams Each team sends a leader to play the game on the board - Teacher explains the instructions of the game: - Teacher gives each team a set of cards with word/phrases from the box - The two leaders of the teams come to the board and pin the cards under the correct pictures - Who can finish faster with more correct answers will be the winner - Students play the games in team mode - - Teacher has students write down the correct answer - Teacher confirms the answers and gives feedback Teacher can ask for translation to check their understanding Task 2: Read the conversation again Who did the following activities?
