GUIDELINES ON WRITING AN ASIGNMENT ON TRANSLATION

I PROCEDURES FOR PREPARING AN ASIGNMENT ON TRANSLATION

Step1: Selecting two English and two Vietnamese newspaper articles (

500 words/ one article-) released from …… to ……… for the

translation assignment

a) Selecting and getting the topic

- Suited to specialized area - Appropriate/ suited to ability

- Feasible - Scientific significance

- Practical significance - Urgent

b) Name of the title

The title of the topic must be

- Indicating/ reflecting scientific ideas of research topic

- Reflecting the essential content of the research

- Clearly understood (only one meaning)

The title should not be

- A question

- Indefinite phrase beginning with About, Some, Think about, First step on

searching…

- In in-academic language

- In large scope of the assignment

Part A: Introduction (Background of the assignment )

I Analyses : ( all the linguistic phenomena in the texts )

I.1 Contextual analysis

According to the model of Dell Hymes ( of your choice )

7 The genre

8 The norms of interaction

Or the model of Halliday ( of your choice )

Field: it refers to the subject matter and it may be similar to certain uses of

the term domain in computational linguistics: what is happening, to whom, where and when, why it is happening, and so on…

Tenor: it refers to the social relation existing between the interactants in a

speech situation It includes relations of formality, power, and affect (manager/clerk, father/son) Tenor influences interpersonal choices in the linguistic system, and thereby it affects role the structures and the strategies chosen to activate the linguistic exchange

Mode: it describes the way the language is being used in the speech

interaction, including the medium (spoken, written, written to be spoken, etc.) as well

as the rhetorical mode (expository, instructive, persuasive, etc.) These three elements make possible for the speaker/writer to orient himself in the context of situation The translator must try and maintain the situational and cultural context by finding the corresponding three components in the target language

physiological actions (Material and Behavioral), thinking and speaking actions (Mental and Verbal) and actions that signal the existence of something/someone and

- genre of the text: style, register, tone and attitude, purposes

- the difficulties and the convenience met during the translation: features of

culture, syntax, semantics, pragmatics……

(Comments: 1000 words)

Part C: Conclusion and Recommendation

- Draws all arguments and findings together

- Leaves the reader with a strong sense that the work you set out to do has been completed, and that it was worthwhile

II WRITING THE ASSIGNMENT

1 Language used in assignment writing

a) Style:

- Passive voice is preferred (The first person pronoun I should be avoided)

- Reflecting the objective reality

b) Mathematical language:

- Independent figures/ Tables of figures

- Graphs/ Diagrams

c) Charts

d) Pictures

2 In-text Quotations

After each in-text quotation, a quotation mark should be applied as follows

"quotation" [book, page number]

Eg: " -" [16, p.245] or [16, pp.245 - 248]

3 References

a) Concept

Any kind of material sources usefully served for the research (read or extracted in terms of research ideology should be listed according to the language)

- book references: books, magazines…

- sources from internet: web pages…

b) Order of reference arrangement

- The authors should be arranged in the alphabetical order

+ Foreign authors begin with Family names followed by initials of first names

+ Vietnamese authors begin with family names as usual but alphabetical order counts with first names

Note: Numbers need to be continuously arranged from beginning to the end, through the all language groups

c) How to list reference items

The following style should be highly recommended:
