(1)Period 83 : Unit 13 : Hobbies E Language focus Date: 24/ 3/ 2009 - Class 11A7 Teacher: NguyÔn Thi L­ - QuÕ Vâ I Objectives: By the end of the lesson students will be able to: - Pronounce the cluster /pt/ , /bd/, /ps/, /bz/ - Pronounce the words and sentences containing these clusters correctly - Use cleft sentences (subject focus, object focus, and adverbial focus) correctly to the exercises and solve communicative tasks II Materials: Textbook, pictures, cards, powerpoint… III Anticipated problems: Students might have difficulty pronouncing Therefore, T should be ready to assist them IV Procedure: Stages Activities Time - T gives sentences on the screen and asks ss to the Warm – up task: Listen and pay attention to the sounds of the underlined 2' words: He stopped smoking She went to a number of shops and clubs in London They were robbed last night What sounds are we going to learn today? Answers: stopped - /pt/ shops - /ps/ Robbed - /bd/ clubs - /bz/ Lead in: In the lesson today, we’ll learn how to pronounce the clusters /pt/ - /bd/- /ps/ - /bz/ A 8’  listen and repeat: Pronunciation - T reads the clusters once and presents how to pronounce these clusters - SS listen and repeat the words in chorus after the teacher/ tape twice - T calls some ss to read these word again and T corrects if necessary  Practise reading aloud these sentences: - T reads these sentences or plays the tape once as model - T asks ss to repeat in chorus once - T asks ss to work in pairs and takes turn to read aloud the given sentences - T goes around to listen and take notes of the typical errors T calls on some ss to read the sentences again and Lop11.com (2) B Grammar: Cleft sentences Subject focus: provides corrective feedback Presentation: - T gives examples on the board and elicits comments from the ss Examples: The boy hit the dog in the garden S V O Adv -> It was the boy who hit the dog in the garden ( subject focus) -> It was the dog that the boy hit in the garden (object focus) -> It was in the garden that the boy hit the dog (adverbial focus)  These sentences are called cleft sentences *Note: Câu tách ( câu chẻ ) dùng để nhấn mạnh môt thµnh phÇn c©u ( chñ ng÷ , t©n ng÷ hoÆc tr¹ng ng÷) Nh÷ng c©u trªn ®­îc gäi lµ c©u t¸ch v× tõ mét câu gốc ta có thể tách thành mệnh đề , Structure: It+ is / was + focus + defining relative clause * Khi muốn nhấn mạnh chủ ngữ ta đem chủ ngữ đặt it is/ was và that Ta có thể dùng đại từ quan hệ who( cho người) that : It is/ was + subject + who/ that + V +… Ex: Tom likes playing football  It is Tom who/ that likes playing football  Choose the best answer a,b,c or d: It was Jane ………phoned you last night a who b that c which d both a and b It … my mother who helps me with my homework a was b were c is d be Answer: 1- d ; – c Exercise 1: (P 152) Write the following sentences after the model, paying attention to the subject of the sentence: - T does the sentence as model: The boy visited his uncle last month -> It was the boy who/that visited his uncle last month - T gets ss to the task in pairs in minutes T prepares some cards with a number The numbers are the numbers of the sentences in Ex1 (from to ) Lop11.com 5’ 8’ (3) Object focus: - After minutes , T gives out the cards to some ss The students have to write the sentence on the board For each correct sentence, student will get one small present Answers: It was my mother who/that bought me a present on my birthday It was Huong and Sandra who/that sang together at the party It was Nam’s father who/that got angry with him It was the boys who/ that played football all day long It was the girl who/that received a letter from her friend yesterday It was his presence at the meeting that frightened the children *Structure: It is/ was + Object + that/who(m) + S + V… +… * Khi muèn nhÊn m¹nh t©n ng÷ c©u ta còng dïng 8’ cấu trúc câu tách Ta đem tân ngữ đặt It is/was và that/ who(m) Khi nhấn mạnh tân ngữ đại từ quan hệ That thường sử dụng nhiều Ex: The woman gave him the book  It was the book that the woman gave him  Choose the best answer a or b: He bought some books yesterday a It was some books that he bought yesterday b It is some books that he bought yestertday Answer: a Exercise 2: (P 153) _ T gets ss to the Ex in minutes, then T gets ss to play the game: Lucky number There are numbers with sentences in Ex and lucky numbers - SS will choose one number , if it is the lucky number, students won’t have to anything but will get one small present ; If it is a sentence , ss will have to read aloud the sentence with cleft sentences of object focus - T gives answers and checks Answer keys: Number 1: The man is learning English –> It was English that the man is learning Number 2: Hoa borrowed the book from Long.-> It Lop11.com (4) Adverbial focus: was the book that Hoa borrowed from Long Number 3: The little boy greeted his grandfather in a strange language -> It was his grandfather that the lillte boy greeted in a strange language Number 4: lucky number Number 5: She sent her friend the postcard.-> It was the post card that she sent her friend Number 6: lucky number * Structure: It is/ was + Adverbial focus + that + S + V +… 7’  Khi muèn nhÊn m¹nh tr¹ng ng÷ ta còng dïng c©u tách để đặt trọng tâm vào trạng ngữ Ta đưa trạng ng÷ vµo gi÷a it is/ was vµ that  Khi nhÊn m¹nh tr¹ng ng÷ ta chØ nªn dïng that More practice: Exercise 3: (P 153) - T divides the class into groups: The Red and the Blue - T asks ss to prepare the Ex3 in minutes and then asks ss in each group to take turn to go to the board and write the sentence from number to number - After that T shows the answer and gives marks for each group The winner will be the group with higher mark and they will get a present Answers: It was for tea that she made some cakes It was for him that his father repaired the bicycle It was on his birthday that she presented him a book It was in Britain that he met his wife It was from the shop that she bought that present 6’  Reorder the words to build cleft sentences: Jack / that / was / it / wrote / I / to who/ him / phoned/ it / was / yesterday/ Jane Answers: It was Jack that I wrote to It was Jane who phoned him yesterday  Make cleft sentences for the picture below: - T shows a picture of Kieu story written by Nguyen Du and asks ss to make sentences using the cleft sentence structures Answer:  It was Nguyen Du who/ that wrote Kieu story  It was Kieu story that Nguyen Du wrote Lop11.com (5) Consolidation and Home work: - T sums up the main point of the lesson - T gives homework: - Redo all the exercises - Do the exercises in the workbook - Prepare for the next lesson Lop11.com 1’ (6)
