LESSON PLAN Lesson: Unit 13: HOBBIES, Part A: Reading.

Class details: Size: 47 students, grade 11B3 Date: 22/03/2012

Aims: To help students learn and practice sub-skills of reading. Objectives: By the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:

- Explain the meaning in context - Read the passage for comprehension - Remember the main ideas of the passage - Talk about their own hobbies

Skills: Guessing meaning in context, scanning for specific information and passage comprehension

Teaching aids & materials: textbook, pictures, handout, posters, blackboard. Lexical items: accomplished, fish tank, accompany, occupied, discard.

Stages/

Time Activities

Work arrangement I- Warm –

up (5mins)

Game: Bingo!

- T asks Ss to close their book

- T shows a list of relaxing activities - T asks Ss to take a piece of paper - T gives the instruction to play game:

“I have a list of activities which people often in their free time You will choose any four words and copy them into your paper I will read out the words in any order. Each time, if you have one of the words that I read, you put a tick next to that word The first student to tick all four words will say “Bingo!” and win the game.”

- T checks the instruction:

T: How many words you choose? Ss: Four

T: What you if you have four correct words? Ss: Say “Bingo!”

- Ss play the game

- T declares the winner and gives gift List of activities:

+ T asks Ss the questions:

“What is the common topic of these activities?” Ss: HOBBIES

II Pre – reading (10 mins)

1 Pre-teach Vocabulary: ( 6mins) * accomplished (adj): Lành nghề, tài ba + Eliciting technique: picture and synonyms + Eliciting question:

Do you know him? Yes, he is Bi Rain He could dance and sing very well Besides, he is also famous actor He is an accomplished person.

What does “accomplished” mean? * fish tank (n) : bể cá

+ Eliciting technique: picture and explaination + Eliciting question:

What are they? They are fishes, right? So, Can tell me what we call a glass container used for keeping fish in * accompany (v) : đệm đàn,nhạc

+ Eliciting technique : Pictures and definition + Eliciting question:

He is playing guitar while the singer is singing. Find a verb that means playing a musical instrument while another person sings.

* occupied: bận rộn

+ Eliciting technique: picture + Eliciting question:

“Is she very busy?”

“What is another word means “busy”?

keep S.O occupied = make S.O busy

Example: His hobbies really keep him occupied * discarded (adj): vứt bỏ, bỏ

+ Eliciting technique: synonym and example + Eliciting question:

I have a bottle of Pepsi I drink it After then, I throw the bottle away So, the bottle is a discarded thing What does “discarded” mean?

- T models the word and asks Ss to repeat chorally in twice

- T calls some students to repeat individually and then shows the word

- T asks Ss to copy down in minute

Checking vocabulary : (2mins) Rub out and Remember

- T asks Ss to close their notebooks and look at the board - T uses “Rub out and Remember” to check vocabulary - T asks Ss to listen and repeat the words

- T asks Ss to repeat twice

- T clears word by word and asks Ss to repeat all the words

- T calls Ss to go to the board and rewrite them - T checks the answers

- T asks Ss to close their books and hangs the poster on the board

- T gives the instruction: Now, you work individually and predict whether these statements are true or false.

- T declares the handout and asks Ss to the task.

Activity 1: Checking prediction ( mins)

- T asks Ss to open their books in page 147, read the passage and check their prediction

- T gives the instruction: “Work in pairs Scan the passage and decides whether these statements are true or false You have minutes to it”.

- T checks the instruction

T: Do you work in individual or in pairs? Ss: In pairs.

T: What will you next?

Ss: Scan the passage and decide whether these statements are true or false.

T: How long you this task? Ss: minutes

- T lets Ss the task

- T goes around to help if necessary

- T lets Ss share their answers with their partners

- T calls on some Ss to give their answers and asks them to explain if the statement is false

- T checks and corrects - T gives feedback Keys:

Activity 2: Reading Comprehension ( 10 mins) - T hangs the poster on the board and gives the

instruction: “Please, work in pairs Read the passage again and answer the following questions You have minutes to it”

- T checks the instruction:

T: Do you work in pairs or in group? Ss: In pair,

T: What you next?

Ss: Read the passage and answer the questions. T: How long?

Ss: Four minutes.

- T gives Ss the handout.

- T asks Ss to read the whole passage again and answer the questions in minutes

Unit 13 : HOBBIES – reading

Task 2: Read the passage and answer the questions: What did writer’s uncle advice him?

2 How did he collect his fish?

3 Where does he collect the stamps?

4 What does the writer with the less common stamps?

After minutes, T asks Ss to play the game “ Lucky Numbers”

- T divides the whole class into two teams: A & B - T gives the instruction:

+ There are numbers: lucky numbers and normal numbers

+ You will take turn to choose the number If your number

is lucky, your team will get marks without answering the question

+ If not, you will have to answer a question and if your answer is correct, you will get marks

+ If your answer is not correct, another team will answer; get mark for a correct answer

+ At the end, team has more marks will be winner - T checks the instruction:

T: Do you need to answer a question if you choose a lucky number?

Ss: No, I don’t.

T: What will you if you choose a normal number? Ss: Answer the question.

- T asks Ss to play scissors and hammers to decide which team chooses first

- T lets Ss to play the game

- Two teams choose the numbers and continue to the end Questions:
