Am I emotionally intelligent? Am I emotionally intelligent? Lac Khai, Sam TEC 430 001 SP2021 - PROJECT LEADERSHIP Illinois State University AM I EMOTIONALLY INTELLIGENT? AM I EMOTIONALLY INTELLIGENT? Am I Emotionally Intelligent? To answer this question, I would like to first discuss what Emotional Intelligence is; then, I will rate myself by using Testing Emotional Intelligence and examine the result based on my experience All the answers to the question will be extrapolated explained in the paragraphs that follow Emotional Intelligence, which is importantly deemed in today’s environment, is using emotions to think and enhance reasoning The ability to identify, understand, and manage moods and feelings between a person and others is the most understandable definition of what Emotional Intelligence is Moreover, according to David Goleman – the author of the New York Times bestseller Emotional Intelligence and Social Intelligence: The New Science of Human Relationships – points out the characteristics of emotional intelligence include Self-awareness, Self-regulation, Motivation, Empathy, and Social skills This concept in the workplace has been focused more nowadays due to the changes in the workplace In fact, most of the tasks in the office would be done by a group, not individually, so this theme is importantly recognized by individuals as well as companies for success at work Therefore, not only employees need to regularly change themselves to be better adapted, but also companies want to choose candidates who will be able to blend well with present teams as always It is true to say that there are many happier employees who would like to loyalty stick longer with AM I EMOTIONALLY INTELLIGENT? the company and try their best to effectively develop output when their leader is an advanced emotionally intelligent person Ranking my level of EI by the global EI Test (Global Leadership Foundation, 2004) - using different criteria to test EQ and gave an aggregate score and an explanation of what these scores meant to reflect the concepts of emotional intelligence, and the result was: From these ratings, my level of emotional intelligence shows what I really am in the reality Actually, I fell this test accurately points out my strength and weakness – “Self-Awareness” and “Relationship Management” which I would significantly focus on ones in this essay To be honest, I am excited because I have never understood myself assuredly before when my knowledge about the zone of Emotional Intelligence remains mostly untouched Self-Awareness, which is the core of Emotional Intelligence, is contained of three competencies:  Emotional self-awareness: the ability to read and understand our emotions as well as recognize their impact on work performance  and relationships; Accurate self-assessment: decision to give a realistic evaluation of strengths and limitations; AM I EMOTIONALLY INTELLIGENT?  Self-confidence: a positive and strong sense for someone’s selfworth In my own experience, I strongly have the ability to understand my feeling, by which my performance is mostly affected as I believe For example, I am the kind of person who can easily get angry, because I am emotionally affected by the environment around me If somethings not good happen, my feeling used to be down for a while However, since I was educated and learnt from my own experiences, I importantly understood that it is very to understand my feeling to better manage myself in each kind of situation, and effectively solve the problem for a better outcome The point that I am making is that when I could not control myself, I am usually silent and think of the consequences if I continue my current feeling so that I will really force myself to be cool down as fast as possible to adapt to the present situation to avoid unwanted results Besides that, not only anger, sometimes too much excitement could also lead to a negative output Moreover, I have meaningfully learned the way of consideration to adapt to the new environment by knowing my strengths and weaknesses as part of selfawareness I believe this would become essential in my professional life On top of that, this significantly develops my level of emotional intelligence  The Relationship Management is comprised of seven  competencies: Visionary leadership: inspiring and guiding groups and individuals; AM I EMOTIONALLY INTELLIGENT?  Developing others: the propensity to strengthen and support the  abilities of others through feedback and guidance; Influence: the ability to exercise a wide range of persuasive strategies with integrity, and also includes listening and sending  clear, convincing and well-tuned messages; Change catalyst: the proficiency in initiating new ideas and  leading people in a new direction; Conflict management: resolving disagreements and collaboratively developing resolutions; building bonds, which is  building and maintaining relationships with others; Teamwork and collaboration: the promotion of cooperation and building of teams It is the fact that people often misunderstand me, and I am really not good at the Relationship Management element After researching the reason for my weakness after the EI test, I realized that the ability to convince people is what I am lacking Even with the fact that I always put my empathy to every conversation for people to share more with me, but the way I straightforwardly gave out my views makes my colleges felt uncomfortable Especially, when faced with high-pressure situations, I tend to be lost confidence When I had a final presentation of my major in my home country university, the debate session made me so stressed At that time, I forgot most of the main points that I had prepared and could not answer because my anxiety was very high combined with standing and speaking in front of my department As the result, I was unable to achieve my goal Therefore, I strongly recognize this element is what I need to practice more in the future AM I EMOTIONALLY INTELLIGENT? In my perspective, I will try to put more efforts and explore practical work where I can something out of my comfort zone To briefly recapitulate, the concept of Emotional Intelligence is not actually new to me, I just could not realize and manage myself in a proper way Based on my experience, I now better understand myself and will try to practice and learn more about the ways to develop a “better” me in the future As it can be seen that nowadays employers when hiring workers will not just look for academic achievements but also focus on the emotional quotient of the candidates .. .AM I EMOTIONALLY INTELLIGENT?
