It is a fact that everyone has at least time having a conflict with others in life Conflict does not automatically mean that there is specific someone at fault, although in some cases that will be the issue If people push to make changes that they feel would be positive for the organization or even in their family, that can indicate that they perform a high level of dealing with conflict as well as prove that how professional they are Therefore, knowing how to deal with conflict would help produce better outcomes for any kind of situation To deal with conflict, there are five management styles – accommodating, avoiding, compromising, competing, collaboration – having its own pros and cons From my own experience, the way how I deal with conflict will be extrapolated explained in the paragraphs that follow After studying and researching on conflict topic, I realized that I have experienced conflict at the workplace and collaboration is one of the methods that I used to solve the problem Preparing testing materials as well as giving test announcements to students are two of my tasks as a General Assistant in an English center Even with the fact that everything is already planned, there were sudden changes that could not be avoided This task generally put me in the A passive situation and time managing pressure that makes me really angry sometimes Because I have to wait for the planners to upload the schedule in order to finish my task The point that I am making is that usually on Friday, the planners will upload the next week’s schedule for HOW DO I MANAGE CONFLICT? other departments to prepare; however, they could not consider the time that others have to prepare their tasks well They always upload the unfished schedule, even though they can correctly adjust it ahead, so they always successfully upload the correct one on Sunday evening Therefore, I not have enough time to prepare testing materials such as writing CDs, printing tests, deliver test announcements to students That is the reason why I usually have very messy and busy Monday to Wednesday weekly At first, I informed my manager the issue that I was facing, but she could not involve because she had no idea how to give a solution for that Therefore, I asked Human Resources to give me the right to work with the planner on his task Then, I surprisingly found out many problems that not come from his side To be honest, it was not his fault at all, the problem came from the current unwell organizing system IT department did not give him permission to edit the schedule of two weeks ahead with the explanation that they have to input all the classes based on the Consultant department’s order, so the planner also had to wait for the IT part’s update But it was not true, they were telling lies because they were very slow on inputting everything online Therefore, I negotiated and gave them a specific deadline to finish uploading for at least two weeks in advance Finally, the problem was solved without any argument In my perspective, the collaboration method significantly contributes to everyone’s satisfaction and preserves the relationship between all parties in an organization Over the downside of time-consuming, the upsides are that the solution could be perfectly solved, the problems of HOW DO I MANAGE CONFLICT? the conflict are found and more importantly, everyone’s happiness has meaningfully remained Another style of conflict management that I would like to mention is Avoiding A portion of people might use to negatively think this method would not serve their purpose in the most effective way However, even dealing with conflict in any style, the main purpose is to produce a better result as well as to keep the relationship not get worse Therefore, using this kind of method correctly, people would significantly receive a successful outcome than they expected From my experience, I recognized that I have been through many situations that I used an avoiding style to manage the conflict Depending on how serious the situation is, I applied a suitable level of avoiding for each situation For example, in my family, when having trouble or misunderstanding between family members, as the youngest child, I am often silent at first to listen and suitably debate later In almost of cases, this helps people realize the mistake in peace; therefore, there is no harm to the relationship between everyone Besides that, I also noticed that this kind of method meaningful helps to solve the conflict in the workplace For me, avoiding does not mean that people have to negatively be silent or walk away with the expression of being rude That just makes everything getting worse In my own experience, when facing trouble or dealing with someone who causes trouble for me I usually express my idea in the happiest way, then slowly find the answer that I want from them I studied this skill from a Vietnamese proverb – if you want to calm someone, you HOW DO I MANAGE CONFLICT? need to be calmed at first Therefore, I would like to specially highlight the point that avoiding is not always bad, smartly applying in some situations would bring a better outcome for both sides without making the relationship between parties getting worse Importantly, practice and apply as smart as possible could bring numerous benefits for the person who professionally mastered the skill To briefly recapitulate, by collaborating with my co-workers and aiming for a win-win approach, my conflict with them was nicely solved as well as by avoiding the right time and right place, I could positively solve the problems without unnecessary arguments in any kind of situation .. .HOW DO I MANAGE CONFLICT?
